Whatever Tempest. I beat a unicorn rider in the topaz championship without a single rank in riding skill in the riding competition.

And out wrestled a dragon without a rank in hand to hand.

God that was the funniest shit ever in that game. The horses though, my god.

Are we talking about the one I ran? Didn't a ronin win it?

        So much for clan posturing!

Belatedly, I can totally help with, like... gruntwork. XP requests, and the normal, tedious +jobs most people hate. Actual RP time or code staffing is tricksy.

I maintain that I was totally going to win that until my luck ran out.

Was totally in first place too until the fuckin duel.

So, let me run these rule changes by you peeps.

Change the mechanical effects of Razor Edged to the following:

When you succeed at an Attack action check that deals damage to a target using a Razor-Edged item, if the damage dealt is reduced to 0 by the target's resistance, roll a single ring die. If the die roll contains no successes, not including advantages and disadvantages, the weapon gains the damaged quality. Additionally, certain techniques require the use of a Razor-Edged weapon.

Reasoning: Razord Edged was silly because it would essentially break your weapon if you ever encountered this type of enemy since everyone was going to have a razor-edged weapon.

Change the mechanical effects of Destroyed to the following:

Such an item is broken. If the item is armor, it no longer provides protection. If the item is a bladed weapon, it can be used as a Deadliness 0, Damage 1, Range 0 stabbing weapon. If the item is a club, it is splintered. Items can be used for improvised purposes at the GM's discretion and may be repaired by NPCs or PCs.

Reasoning: This isn't so much an HR as it is clarifying the GM Discretion part of Destroyed.

Change the mechanical effects of Wargear to the following:

Whenever a character in Wargear attempts any skill check that is not in the martial or scholar group, they do so at a penalty of TN +1. Wargear is not suited to Social or Deft pursuits.

Reasoning: Why does Wargear add strife? People see Wargear all the time, it's not unusual, it's just socially unacceptable to wear it outside of a battlefield.

I bet you thought this project was dead.

                Potential Theme
I was thinking about setting a game in a budding Rokugani settlement in the Ivory Kingdoms. As a joint diplomatic effort between the Emerald Emperor and the Maharaja to combat the illegal trade that pours over both borders.

I think this is a pretty good place to start because it allows Rokugan and Ivory Kingdom PCs, along with a good plot environment from all sides (political, trade, combat), and has good room for PC led growth.

                Opinions?

I'd be cautious on starting to do house rules since we only have a beta. A lot of glitchy things have already been changed in the first couple updates (like the iaijutsu techs and movement), and I know there's some discussion on the forums about the razor weapons vs. armor (it's currently very game-able anyway, as you can usually choose to miss to avoid a weapon break).

Re: setting, I think setting things in the colonies might break pretty far from the core setting, and also I personally don't care much for the later stuff. Just not big on Iweko or the Spider Clan (and I think they'd be a nightmare on a MUSH). My personal inclination would be either be picking up with the new official continuity (Scorpion win coup), fishing out one of the new, slightly more metaplot-isolated settings from Imperial Histories, or doing a homebrew like I did for KK.

@bored I was going for Homebrew with this, but okay, so Ivory is bad. Do you have suggestions for something outside of Rokugan? That was the goal.

Also, @faraday , I've decided to use AresMush for this.

@alzie Why is out of Rokugan the goal? You instantly run into a ton of issues there, because the whole game is built on the assumption of people all being clan samurai. Even ronin/BoS/imperials/etc have traditionally been pretty hard to make work. Look at the new character creation, for instance, where questions (that yield stat changes) specifically reference your clan, lord, specific bushido beliefs, etc.

Your only other well-developed option is the Burning Sands (Egyptian/Arabian styled). The world has a lot of other stuff existing distantly elsewhere (including a Europe analogue) but these places would be pretty distant.

@bored I mean, there are 2 settings dedicated to being not in rokugan. There was even the Second City Box Set which was dedicated to the colonies. Then Age of Exploration was written into Imperial Histories 2 to go along with Second City. So I'm not sure why it's that far removed from the setting? Also there's rokugan in space so...

That being said, if we had to pick a setting, would people be more interested in:

                            We could do that.

I really like the idea of combining The Great Famine with the Five Rings Heresy. Opinions on this @bored and @ShelBeast ?

@alzie Yep, they made sets/material for some of them (there was a full RPG for Burning Sands, too). They also made material for non-samurai (monks, Ninja, Kolat) playable nonhumans (nezumi, naga) and various other weirdness. RPG splatbook creep is a thing (see: old White Wolf), it doesn't mean that all of that material is good or easy to integrate.

Of the stuff you've mentioned, the Great Famine is probably the most sensible. I've always liked it as a less grandiose, more human take on things, and avoids totally changing the cosmology, technology, etc as many of the others do. All the others also kind of buck default game assumptions (even changing the core great clans) and may be hard to do, especially with a new ruleset.
