I'm limiting FS(as in not having them) for the entirely selfish reason that I'm not interested in dealing with that aspect. It's just not something I'm looking to run.
Literally the only reason you need. It's not selfish, it's just not the kind of stories you want to tell.

The Force really probably isn't going to happen. Unless it's dealing with some NPC for a bit. I'm open to evolving as time goes on, but I'm really not a huge fan of one or two people getting to play an awesome role with very limited slots.
You can always go the route Star Wars Galaxies started on: make players have to work to become Jedi, instead of automatically starting as one. The setting you're works well for that.
Primarily, because I'm a dinosaur that thinks FS characters became way too common in the franchise, and just aren't all that interesting.
Secondarily, because whenever I saw that 'work for it criteria' on a game...the perception was that slots just went to staffers and their buds. Not that I believe I'd do that, nor do I have many buds in the hobby after a fairly long time away...but it's just not a look that I love.
All good points. I was just pointing out an option between 'all' and 'none'. And I think that Galaxies had the right idea when it started, given the near complete purge that had just happened. There weren't any Jedi for the first 2 years of the game, and there were no instructions on how to unlock the class. It was all exploration of the galaxy and experimentation with character builds and crafting; and I think the game was better for it.
Anyways, just my 2 cr.

Update because work is dead and I've got nothing better to do. Looks like it's going to be using Dahan's D6 on Pennmush. So folks who preferred some coded objects and probably a space system are in luck.
-
@theznar Augh. I get going with the code base that you have easy access to, but I honestly donβt know that I can easily give up the features of AresMush.
-
@seraphim73 I know. I'll miss them a lot. But adding D6 WEG to Ares isn't realistic, currently. I looked at switching to using Fate...but eh. I like WEG D6 for this nostalgia project. I would have much preferred to stick with Ares, but such is life.
-
@theznar I think it depends on how deep you want to go. I'm using WEG D6 for a private Old Republic game right now and it works fine. C-gen is done on the MUSH, a sheet can be accessed through the game or through the web portal, and they use a basic dice command for rolls. Granted this is a small group, but it works well for us so far.
If you're looking for 100% web portal integration with coded dice commands and web portal c-gen, I'm still not sure how it'd be more complicated than most other systems out there. Just my 2 cents though.

A bunch of games have done something sort of similar now - PDF or off-site sheets just referenced from the game, coupled with a generic die roller. There's a plugin now that lets you do that with (hopefully) minimal seams.

It's not that it's MORE complicated. But what you described - even just for an in-game command-based chargen and die roller - is a ton of work. I poked at it briefly because the game interested me, but it was just gonna be more effort than I have to give right now.
TTRPG systems generally do not adapt well to MU code. They're too fraught with special exceptions and things that are easy for a human to handle but a PITA to program. Like "You get 6 dice but you can take some number of them and break them apart into 'pips' for a +1 or +2.. but not +3 because then that becomes the next die level..." Or "Everyone gets 12 dice for skills...except FooAliens, who get 14 dice, but have to spend 2 of them on knowledge skills..." (I made that one up) They're designed for people led by a governing GM, not for automated systems. It can be done, sure, but it's a pain.
And if you want coded space and blaster objects and stuff, Ares isn't the right choice anyway.

So. D6 is working like a charm, I finally got pennmush running after banging my head against a really dumb wall for a few weeks. I'm hoping to have a functional game in early January, if I can wrap my head around a wiki, since that seems to be something all the kids want these days.
-
@theznar hell yeah

Get someone else to handle the wiki if its not your thing. It seems to be a popular thing that people volunteer for. More people can wiki than to code, it seems.

wikidot is pretty easy to setup. mediawiki is harder. (wikidot is also free, has its own platform, yadda yadda).
Just please for the love of god do not use fandom.com.

@warma-sheen I am vaguely considering opening without a wiki, and seeing if anyone likes the game enough to give it a shot at helping set it up...I don't really know many folks in the hobby anymore.
I do have code to use sql on the mush to help link the two up on my server, but figuring that out is later in my development process.
-
yeah ..there is no world in which I use fandom. Gross.

Building a game when it's already open is really hard.
-
Let me know if I can help with anything like building or whatever.
-
@tiredewok I appreciate that, and will likely take you up on it!
