Space Sim w/Economy
-
This came up in a talk with someone else: we want something like WNOHGB had. A game where we can fly ships around and work an economy system.
Not a full MUD (tho maybe there's a MUD out there that can scratch the itch), but something akin to, yes, WNOHGB with its trade system.
Considering I haven't heard about any such game in ages...... would there be anyone interested in working on developing one? Or anyone who has the code to one of these games that'd be willing to work on resurfacing it?
@Jennkryst (not the person I was talking to, mind) would probably love you forever if they got to play a space trucker.

Hopefully this will work!

There is a missing file in my directory that github wouldn't allow me to load - working theory is because the file I have is 0kb, maybe? I dunno! The file that's missing:
hconsole.h
Have at ye, code! If this gets put up anywhere for testing, let me know! I used to crash the testbed MU pretty regularly doing nonsense things.

Now, mind, while I wouldn't be opposed to helping on such a project... I've already got a pretty full plate with SGM.
I just wanna play space trucker dagummit.

I'd be willing to pour in ALL THE EFFORT for helping make a game like this. It might not be until sometime in October - Census work on top of my normal job has be pulling 70 hour weeks, which is great for the bank and getting paid to exercise, but hell for social and hobby stuffs.
I've been wanting to learn coding stuff for literal years (that whole 'if you don't like it, make your own' mentality? It's been on my to-do list, damnit). The GOAL is to make something modular enough it can get plugged into other games and easily synch with whatever is there. Impossible... but maybe not?

What is that
Where no one has gone before. 98% sure.

As @Jennkryst said: Where No One Has Gone Before.
It was a Star Trek MOO that ran really strong for a while and I think a lot of that had to do with the space sim aspect. Their code was advanced enough that the ship computers were programmable (using super simple *NIX style scripting)! But man, I loved their econ system. I always went Indie to play merchant. Just wanna while away the hours? Pick up cargo at point A and truck it to point B: profit.

I think Starmourn is technically this, though it's IRE pay-to-win MUD, so.

PAY TO PLAY A FAKE MONEY ECON GAME?!
...even as I say this I look at Eve Online lol.

@Jennkryst @Auspice Age of Alliances does, in fact, have space trucking mechanics! Hyperspace speed mechanics that translate to real time between destinations on a pretty decently sized galactic grid. I think there's a bit of buy-in when it comes to getting into that system, though, but it seems like there's a healthy level of fluff to it!
(I haven't personally messed with it, but there's a huge number of people that do. I started play as a lowly Spacehand.)
-
I have this idea for a DUNE Board Game-esque, Twilight Imperium-esque, Republic of Rome Board Game-esque setting only in fantasy "age of sail"-ish setting with the planets replaced with islands and space replaces with an ocean. Instead of starships, there will by galleons and such. The more islands under a person's control, the more votes they have in the Senate in the capital city where the grid is focused. If you don't want to play the politics game, you could merchant or a pirate or an adventurer sailing the seas.

Age of Alliances space trucker sim has a 24 hour cooldown
one run per 24 hours would get boring quick and may not scratch the itch

oh man no. what if that run takes 20 minutes?! I wanna design a complex route that'll make me profit and take me to ten different stops in 3 hours.

The buy-in, I don't mind. As mentioned before, I fought my way through the whole process to unlock a force user like. Three separate times. I had my own garage of different ships, Val Kilmer Bruce Wayne collector style. I thorooughly abused the space trading system and amassed... probably the hyoojest fortune on the grid.
And they wouldn't let me spend any of it on like... cybernetics, or ship upgrades, or custom @dug ship stuff. Sooooo... I bounced to a different Star Wars game (and other genres) after all that.
All of which appears to be moot with changes to the system, per @Dropbear... probably a direct result of me doing my thing. Oh well.

The way it USED to work, was you had a... I forget. X minute cool down, per ton of cargo you were loading. Were you off-loading 5 tons, but also loading up another 10 tons? That's gonna take 15x minutes.
-
Trade Wars 2002 with semi-automated systems for trade would make a hell of a fun MU. There was a lot of hidden depth in that silly old BBS door game about being a free trader.
-
You can still get/play Trade Wars and it has held up pretty well too.
-
@Bad-at-Lurking I used to LOVE trade wars!
-
@SG Me too. So much fun. I remember one game where I ended up sinking every last credit into a tricked out pirate hunter because some other 14 year old raided my planet base and wiped out most of my fortune. That was my cue to become a caffeine, sugar and rage filled little Batman, hounding his ass across the galaxy for weeks.
Man, I miss having the time for a really good vendetta.
-
so maybe someone needs to boot up a Trade Wars server.
