I always make the text description first, then look for a PB that fits it - which often means doing a google image search for things like 'young woman freckles' or something. Even once I find a potential person, I try to find a picture that gets across the character - I've had PBs where I can only really use ONE image of them, because it fits the personality of the character, but none of the others do.
That said, I don't really care about other people's PBs, and will usually go from the written description. Anime or drawn PBs don't bother me at all, but doing nothing but linking a picture in your desc, or having some incredibly generic and unhelpful desc like 'this is a person' drives me up the wall.
I tend to go in the opposite direction; I'll make my character, but before describing them, I'll find a PB and then describe that with some minor details changed. I used to put much more effort into my descriptions when I was younger, so much so that I could never find a PB. Now I feel like I'm cheating, but I've also learned less is better in most cases as far as description, so keeping it short and sweet has been beneficial.
@Derp Asklepios was possibly the longest played character out of this bunch; I played him for at LEAST 2 full years, maybe longer. I honestly would like to revive a character similar to him one day, as I tried on RfK.
Cai and Ripley were both awesome. I loved Cai's construction site build btw, I can still see that scene in my mind lol. RfK was truly a fantastic game.
Figured I'd drop this here to see if anyone remembers these characters. I'm not really an alt-aholic; I tend to play singular characters for long periods with long breaks in between from MUSHing in general, but I've been playing MU's for more than 15 years so I'm bound to know some of you

Aegis on a variety of Marvel games (don't judge me),
Hex on Retro (one scene, but memorable; ever see a Lasombra box a fire demon? Doesn't go well),
Asklepios and Stenvarr on HM (I played the shit out of HM, and staffed there as Zombie when I was a teenager)
Shane on TR (Dreadlocked gangrel carthian. I also staffed there as Newark,)
Kraken on Fallcoast (ok this wasn't a PC, I never made a memorable PC on FC but I did staff there before and after a certain arachnid)
Jakob Silverwood on RfK (inspired by a previous PC, Asklepios. Loved this game so much)
...and a handful of others I can't remember in between.
