Something similar to WoD, but not quite

  • Politics Banned

I really, really like the theme of WoD. The theme being, it's real life, but there's vampires and werewolves and shit all over the place. That's cool. I enjoy that a lot.

But I think WoD is deeply flawed and, well, I'm not sure it's keeping well. Are there competitors out there with a similar theme? If not, how much fun do you guys think it would be if someone were to create one? (Or another one, if one already exists)

  • It's called 'urban fantasy' and happens to be my favorite genre to play in. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of them.

  • A lot of people in another thread mentioned Dark Spires already.

I want a Buffy game SO FUCKING BAD.

Buffy? Anyone? BUFFY? PLEASE MAKE ME A BUFFY GAME.

  • Coder

@Sunny Every buffy game I've seen has devolved to horribleness just the way Anita Blake games do.

I've had a lot of fun over the years on Buffy games. Mystick Krewe had a bit of crazy, but nothing like the sorta crazy that WOD tends to get to. Devilshire was a lot of fun for awhile. Yes, every MUSH devolves into horribleness eventually, but that's just a part of the cycle of life.

If I can get off my ass and build a grid (augh I hate building), I'd open my Buffy game like yesterday. I build like a room a week. >.>

  • @Coin Make us a Buffy game.

  • Politics

@TNP Why, so your character can judge my character for being horrible?

  • @Coin Kyle didn't think Jack was horrible. He did what he thought was best for the family. So did Kyle. Jack couldn't help being a manipulative sadist with no morals.

    Fair enough. Still, so judgy.

@ixokai Do you want my grid? You can have my grid.

It's not judgy if it's accurate.

The real question is what do you think is flawed, because other systems may have the same flaws and/or with something like WoD you have the Classic flavor and the Chronicles of Darkness with that strange 1e rule set in the middle >.>

@Sunny Do you mean Dust's? I was kinda set on Pittsburgh, but I might have to get over that due to my ineptitude in building. :)

    TOTALLY.

  • What about Scion... Was that system any good?

  • Coder

@ThatOneDude Scion was like a half assed mix of Aberrant + Exalted + WoD. It had some neat ideas but overall was to scattered and unfocused in my opinion. It was trying to be to many things at once.

  • Pitcrew

Scion is good in tabletop but I don't think it works great as a mush.

  • I love the concept though. I'd app on a decent Scion game.

  • @TNP
Scion requires so much house ruling though, it may not be worth it, as there are flat-out broken and 'if you don't take this choice if you qualify you are stupid' powers, like Serpent's Gaze and its upgrade, or Untouchable Opponent.

I've recently been reading the Buffy and Angel RPGs and I like the Unisystem mechanics. I think Buffy would benefit from drawing on the Season 8/Season 9 comics for some inspiration on the post-Slayer Awakening period. Or go full Wishverse to give something... a bit different...

  • Coder

I liked Scion in theory but the MUSH I played of it was... pretty cray. If you weren't in with the (admittedly few) staff, you had zero chance for advancement. At all.

Thematically... It was kind of a more serious version of Percy Jackson except without the Legion and without Camp Half-Blood. Which I could get behind but the stories...

Hard to do in large scale format without killing off huge chunks of player base. Which, is not inherently bad imho, if it furthers the story.
