What locations do you want to RP in?
-
@Paris Yep. I hate actual parties that my friends throw where I don't know most of the people. I would rather go to a bar, because at least we are all strangers there, rather than me not being in the clique.
-
Yeah, back in the days of yore when I could actually manage more than a single beer, I met people all the time at bars. Couple of places around here, that's like the whole point (and I'm not talking meat markets, either). It's like the whole point of going out solo? To make new friends? Shuffleboard or Air Hockey or w/e. I have met some awesome people that way.
Then I got old and shy.

I actually wonder why bar rp is such a thing. Are the undead super focused on the final four based on nostalgia for their one time alma mater?
Especially because strangers talking to you at a bar can be really creepy, it doesn't seem like the best setting for meeting new people, or old people.
Is it because people like rping in a new situation with a pretend drink in their hand, just like in real life having one to hold gives you something to do and thus lubricates the awkwardness of being around all those strangers?
Bars are only cool for a short window of life, then they are the worst.
You must live in an area without a bar/pub culture. I sit at the actual bar of local microbreweries at least once a week and just strike up conversations with people. I have had some of my most interesting interactions in this way. Prohibition and the temperance movement really did a number on what is a very natural way to socialize - grab some good beer and talk to strangers for no reason but to just relax and have fun.
Dude I live in Washington DC. There is a bar culture, there are even several varieties of bar cultures. In my 20's I sampled many of them. But now I am old, I don't like to wear high heels unless I know I'll be sitting, and if I want to drink I prefer to do so over dinner at a restaurant or in the comfort of my own home.
-
Just throwing in here that I don't mind bar rp at all! It's fine and sometimes fun and I participate in it willingly. I was just musing on what made it the default and adding silly commentary for fun.
-
Why are high heels a requisite for going to a bar? I could see a club being that way, but I can't think of any time I saw a woman in high heels in any of the bars I frequent. High heels throw off a woman's pool and darts game.
-
You are correct, I was merging 'bar' and 'club' in my head, and they are not the same. Also high heels are never -required- but when one is young and trying to look as cute as possible all the time they are often deployed. I only have one pair of heels now, and have not worn them in several years.
-
@Gingerlily Clubs are awful, pretentious places that offer none of the relaxation, conversation, and fun that bars offer, replacing them with loud music, douches, and bad dancing. Unless it is a gay club. Then it's loud music, colorful drag shows, and being hit on by the sex I am not attracted to.
I can understand the desire to look cute, but at a bar everyone is beautiful. Beer goggles have that effect.

This stirs up fond memories of the DC club scene from when I was a teenager in the early 00's. Tracks. The Follies. La Cage. The DC Eagle. Good times, good times.

Alternatively, bars are seedy places full of the kind of cliques and locals who don't really want you there.
I don't believe this for every "bar", but from your description of clubs, you're going to entirely the wrong clubs.
-
@Thenomain My city has something like three clubs, one of which is the awesome gay club. However we have hundreds of bars, and it's a college town so "regulars" aren't much of a thing when the crowd is constantly changing every year.

So what you're really saying is that social gatherings in different locations differ based on the local culture.
Why didn't you say so to begin with!
