Mac OS Sierra Client
-
I did something dumb and upgraded my Mac OS to Sierra and now my Potato client doesn't work. It looks like I need to find a new client. I'm aware of Atlantis, but I'm also fear change.
I'm happily taking suggestions.
-
Did you not learn from me?! I've been upset about losing Potato for years now!
You're stuck with Atlantis, I'm afraid. I'll help you figure stuff out if need. And you can cross your fingers with me that @Sparks will have Atlantis 2 ready for testing soon.
-
Atlantis is not scary. one of us, one of us..
-
@auspice bursts into tears
Okay. Atlantis.
Perhaps someone who is savvy can just let me know how to change the input box so it's white with black text and that text is a different font than the monospace of the output window?
That's probably all I need to cope.

That's like being stuck with ten million dollars cash, untaxed, that you can spend however you want, no strings attached.

If someone else doesn't get to it shortly, I'll edit this to explain the process.

I've tried to change the color settings under World Preferences, but it changes the whole thing. I just get twitchy when my INPUT window is white-on-black, but I want to keep the output window white-on-black.
I have no idea if I'm making sense.

Potato was the perfect client for me. The dual-input windows. The nested spawns (so they only showed the 'tab' when on that particular world). The fact that I could have an always-running auto-log, but then kick up a second log on top of it to capture something specific.
I've been using Atlantis a couple years and I still miss those things.

Okay, yeah, it does have a few benefits (that I workaround by always having BBEdit open). I was looking into a workaround when I found the reason Potato won't run here: https://github.com/talvo/potato/issues/455#issuecomment-287202932
This isn't something that can easily be rectified without looking into it, and I didn't; the project's last blog entry was June 1st which, unless things change, marks to me as it as no longer being developed. I wouldn't call it abandoned, yet, but until activity returns to the project it's unlikely that someone's going to fork the project to fix it; it has zero forks yet so no-go. Sorry.

Unfortunately there is no way to set each text pane with its own color set or font. While I'm tempted to summon @Sparks in the Beetlejuice style, I'm sure she has a life that she also wants to attend to or something.
I mean, just because we don't....

You can also try out Mudlet. I tried it out for a little while but went back to Atlantis. The reason I wanted to try it was because of the plugin system. I was able to get a plugin (YATCO) that allowed me to move my OOC chat out of my main window but still have it on the screen (two panes basically).
Sparks showed me you can pull spawns out into their own windows and then I discovered OSX's split view and I haven't looked back.
Mudlet is more configurable like Potato but it seems to be sluggish on OSX. It has that feature where if you scroll the output pane it splits it and lets you continue to see the bottom few lines of output which is really annoying to me and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable that. It also has it's own spell check which is not as good as the built in OSX spell check and it changes the right click menu which won't allow you to look up words easily.
Try it out but I'm betting you'll want to stick with Atlantis.

@auspice While a lot of those I'm pulling into Atlantis 2.0, 1.0 allows you to open as many log files as you want on a world at once, and close them individually. You should be able to have an always-running log and pop one immediately to catch a specific thing.

This contains the 'workaround' offered: https://github.com/talvo/potato/issues/458
I was never able to get it working, but even the person who did said it still crashes frequently.

Hmm. I feel like I had issues with it last I tried, but I rarely log anything at all anymore, so I'm not certain!

I'm happily giving Atlantis a go.
@Sparks If there's a way to individually set the background color and text color for the input window, let me know; otherwise, that might not be a bad feature for 2.0. Otherwise, I've done some fiddling and it at least looks a bit more familiar.
While I'm not as crotchety as some (I'm looking at you, @Seraphim73, who still uses an outdated zMud), I do miss the white bg and black text for the input window.
-
Atlantis is awesome sauce but Potato runs just fine on MacOS, if you prefer it.

I mean, yes Atlantis is awesome, but:

So the point is that it doesn't run fine for the OP.

Even I gave up zMud early on. Dang, man!
And yeah, @RnMissionRun - Potato worked on OSX... until the Sierra update. It broke it. There's bugs open on github about this.

In that case, I'm glad that I held off on updating to High Sierra!
Edited to add: Have you tried grabbing the source and launching main.tcl directly? Potato is just TCL/TK (a scripted programming language like Python or LUA) so the problem is almost certainly specific to the executable version they're distributing for MacOS.

Except that it broke on Sierra, which comes before High Sierra.
Mind you, my advice to everyone updating any OS is to wait a few weeks or a few months to see what breaks in the new version. The number of things that iOS 11 broke that devs had two years to fix just baffles me.

That's the suggested workaround.
It doesn't work. -
Honestly, I loved zMud, for MUD's, for MUSH's/MUX's etc, I preferred SimpleMU, but now it's Potato, but only because I figured out how to make all the shortcuts match SimpleMU.
-
@auspice I paid $20 for that license. Just because I paid that $20 20 years ago is no reason to stop using the product.
