Interest Check: Alternate Supernatural (TV) Game
-
Yes and please! There is another SPN styled game out there, don't know how busy it is. But very different from this.
-
@magee101 It might come down to that, in all honesty. I'm not a coder. I fully intend to bribe Theno with the monies for code, no matter what happens, but there is so much code for WoD out there anyway, it may just be easier because people know it already. Supernatural does have the Cortex system, but it's not like I can post the rules for it for people. And if I want people to be able to run things for other people they've need to know the system too. It would be heavily houseruled but it's something a lot of people know.
To me it's less about the system and more about the story, and with HtV how do you justify going around and killing monsters, when maybe you are one yourself? I'll have to talk it over with Thenomain, if he's willing, because ultimately he's the one I'll be throwing money at. I'm great at finding bugs and theoretical coding; give me coder and I can tell them what I want and what the code should look for, or exclude, but the last time I coded was uh... on a VIC 20?
So yeah, while this is an interest check, please remember someone should have already thrown that starting a Mu* flowchart out at me, if I'm going to be completely honest.

I'm just suggesting using the mechanics, not the theme of HtV. The theme would be Supernatural. But yes for the monster side of things it would create a bit of houseruling for powers and stuff. You could probably find some parallels in books like VtR or WtF to base things on and twist/modify to fit theme as proper.
-
I understand it would be just mechanics, but what I was getting at are the hunters with powers would be in their own grey area, which still works for the theme of the show. (Sam has visions, other Hunters think he's a monster to be hunted.) But things would still need to be houseruled to work, because otherwise you might as well just say the system is nWoD rather than HtV is what I mean. Like Lucifuge are maybe like Sam where some demon slipped them demon blood when they were a kid, and Cheiron group is an offshoot of the Men of Letters.
-
Please let this happen.
-
I have decided the RL Tweets of @s8n are to be in game canon.
-
@insomnia you will also notice that I specifically mentiones compactless hunters to avoid worrying about using any of the nWoD specific powers found in HtV. Secpnd Sight with some houseruling woukd probably be better for the human levels of power
-
I get that. If I went HtV for the system though it would be across the board, but limited. Like for example vampires, werewolves, any monster that is extra strong would have potence or something. There would be a list of the available to either choose from if it's a new / not well documented monster, or something all supernaturals who are strong have.
If Hunter's were compactless though I'd probably just go with the Cortex system, tbh. It's not a bad system. Going WoD would be for some familiarity of the system for players, really. I wouldn't see a reason to go HtV if it didn't use all the system though.
-
@insomnia
Don't use HtV. Just use the Cortex system, it's entirely workable and servicable and if you have supernatural monsters without writeups then you can easily work them in since it's all dice ratings, whereas it takes a lot more work to do that with HtV. -
@bobotron That was the plan originally. But honestly I don't mind doing the work for houserules and making it work. In the end though the system and code stuff would largely be up to @Thenomain and whatever is easier for him in the long run, with a smattering of what I can beg from @Cobaltasaurus because I'm old and don't want to change and like the things she did to jobs, even if I had to ask how to do it again. But those commands are where I re-learned everything after coming back for a while, and I mostly remember now.
The other big thing for me is I'd like people other than me to be able to run things right from the start too. I'm worried if people don't know the systems, they won't run PrPs. Maybe have a roster of generic-ish monsters people can use?
-
This is interesting! One thing I wonder though, is how you'd handle nationalities. I've found whenever a game is set anywhere other than the US, the game ends up full of Americans anyway. As a Nova Scotian myself, I would be excited to see a game set here, but I wonder how many of the characters would be locals. I mean, I understand people wanting to play a nationality/background they know, but with a place as small as NS, it would be odd if say, 70% or more of the chars were American.
-
@sandown I mean I'm from the Valley, so with Acadia right here I'm pretty used to multi-cultural-ness. On one hand now, you need to have a passport to visit even from the States, but the apocalypse probably won't make that matter. But since the virus started in Detroit they're going to have to have at least go partway through that area which isn't exactly the best idea, so non Canadians will have to explain why they are there in the first place either way. So maybe they were visiting (I mean people on love going to Nova Scotia, so I guess it's believable.) Or school, or trying to get out of North America.
So even though I want a yes game, it'll still have to follow theme. If I notice too many people apping Americans, I will tell them they have to change it before approval.
-
@insomnia My only request is that you do a plot where the Harbour Hopper becomes possessed and starts running people down ala Christine.
-
WoD is also an extremely robust system that is fairly easy to houserule once you see the game balance pattern for powers. I have only loosely messed with Cortex iirc (if thats what serenitymush used) so I am not sure but yeah the familiarity of a d10 system is very appealing to me. Honestly I have always seen it as a simple task that just takes time but not as much effort as you would think.
-
@insomnia
I think there's a Cortex quickstarter or SRD out there. It's literally all they'd need. There's next to no other craziness to it, as Cortex is the simplest system I've seen (rank up through die ranks, combine die totals, roll over a target number). And if we're being honest, people are going to pirate it or just ask "oh how do I do eet?' anyway like they do on WoD games. -
@sandown I actually had plans for the duck. >.>
-
I just realized, this is basically Welcome to Hellifax the game. Haha.
-
Oooh! I didn't know about that. Thanks for sharing!
