Netrunner MUDs
-
Can anyone explain what they are? This came up in a discussion with my friend who said she was selling her Netrunner card collection, and then I remembered hearing it in a MUD context. I then learned that there are Netrunner MUDs, but I feel like they may be unrelated to the card game, so now I'm just confused and curious if anyone knows anything.

@HelloProject
I mean, it's like Magic, it's got an entire lore and universe behind it? Presumably the MUDs are just using the cyberpunk setting of the card game.

There's Netrunner and there's Android: Netrunner. Netrunner was a Richard Garfield-created, WotC-produced collectible cardgame that came out in 1996. In 2008, Fantasy Flight Games released a board game called Android with its own setting. In 2012, Fantasy Flight releases Android: Netrunner which used mechanics and ideas from Netrunner and the setting from Android.
I know nothing about any MUDS that take place in the settings of any of the products; though, Android is a pretty good if standard cyberpunk setting.

FFG ALSO released a Genesys setting book for it, so that could be part of it.

Depends.
There are MUDs that were based on Netrunner the card game's fictional universe. Those are Netrunner MUDs. You can read about one here: http://www.topmudsites.com/forums/muddisplay.php?mudid=netrunners
There are MUDs that are called Netrunner based on an old BBS game where the point was to 'deck' into systems and take as much cash as possible before being killed by 'ICE.' These are Netrunner MUDs.
In general, Netrunners were MUDs based on hacking a system by inputting unix like commands and avoiding detection by the host or destruction by ICE.

Now I am curious. Which came first: Shadowrun or Netrunner?
And yes, I could've just looked it up, but eh. People are talking about it, so why not just ask here?

Shadowrun, by several years. But most of the similarities between the two (and the Cyberpunk RPG) are attributable to the underlying fiction sources.

Technically, Netrunner came out first, since it's based directly on the Cyberpunk RPG. All the names of items, Corporations, and system concepts, like Daemon programs & MU, are directly taken from the Cyberpunk setting.

I'm not sure how you figure that.
Shadowrun was published in 1989.
Netrunner was published in 1996.
It is true that the Cyberpunk RPG came out first (in 1988), but Cyberpunk is separate from Netrunner even though they are based in the same setting. Also, Netrunner is based on CP2020 (the 1990 edition) not the original 1998 edition.
