CofD on Ares (A Question)
-
So I've seen a couple of games with CofD using Ares and using sheets through Google Docs. I'm kind of curious, how do people generally find this style of things? Is it new and different? Or do people prefer more automation through code and not having to worry about keeping track of what's on a Google Doc?

@rucket For me, I don't like it. I wish someone could make something like what @Thenomain did with Tinymux for Ares. Though honestly, I think cWoD, the 20th rules, and CofD would all do well if it's figured out in Ares.

I don't know that anyone likes it, it's just all they have to work with.
Various coders have looked at implementing CofD on Ares, but usually they want to make the full-fledged immersive type of WoD code that people are used to. That doesn't work well with Ares' flexible scene system, and would require so many custom code mods to core systems that it wouldn't be easy to share.
Nobody seems to just want to make a simple chargen + die roller for CofD. No MUSH chargen is easy, but it would be fairly straightforward - like the Fate/FFG/Cortex ones I put together. But even if they did, there are some other considerations around whether CofD/WoD really fits well in Ares' design philosophy.

Yeah, I totally get all of this. I was just curious how people found playing with it more than anything else. I guess when I look at it it feels a little table-top-ish which is kind of cool, but also makes me wonder how much staff work there is to keep an eye on sheets and such.

Speaking as the person who does 'Tech Support' essentially for 3 of the WoD Ares games, it really isn't that bad. On the one where I primarily helped with sheet work we just have people submit beat claims and xp spends once a week. The sheets are set up to automatically grant monthly XP so there's no need to go through everyone's sheets and add that.
How it works on the first place I helped set up: The sheets themselves are copied to a folder on the site gmail and then embedded into the 'Sheet' tab with the Generic RPG plugin that Faraday put together. So the players can't make any edits to the sheets themselves. I'm pretty sure it's a similar situation on the other two but I didn't have a hand in setting their system up. I just primarily keep Ares up to date and help with minor CSS things and the like

@raeras Oh, that's interesting. I was curious how sheet maintenance was being done, so thank you for answering. That all makes sense too as staff would want to make sure that there's no cheating going on.
