Can RP be art?
-
I already regret this, but I am curious what folks think. Obviously not all RP is artistic or aims to be, but I feel, and have for nearly 2 decades (I blame White Wolf) that it certainly can be.
When I run a scene, I try and do my best to at least capture and evoke moods and images. If it is a horror game, I want to disturb and make the players a little uneasy.
Not going to write a long OP here, just getting thoughts.

No.

Whenever I see a "Can blank be art" I get a slight tick. Art is completely subjective. Literally ANYTHING can be considered art. Take a shit, snap a photo...bam...art (to someone).
-
It's as artful as groups of friends getting together to jam with instruments. I mean, the bar is pretty low for what can be thought of as art these days. Artist is essentially a meaningless word these days the idea's been diluted so much.

@DnvnQuinn - Since there is literally a blog devoted to the artistic quality of the dick pic, I concede your point.

The art is in the photography of the shit and/or dick, not the shit and/or dick itself. Just sayin'.

Counterpoint: My dick is a work of art.
-
Totally. It's collaborative writing, and writing can be art.

And I've seen photographs of the Mona Lisa that look like shit.

Your mom has.

I more like the question do RPers try to make art. All jokes aside, and people's goals notwithstanding, unfortunately I find that most people don't try.

I suppose then, I should ask: SHOULD they try?

I've been in scenes where I felt the same creative rush I feel when I'm in a really good writing groove. A very, very few scenes. I could probably count them on my hands with fingers to spare, and I've been doing this for 15+ years. But they're what keeps me coming back.
Is that 'art'? I don't know. I think the comparison to a jam band with friends in a garage is a good one. Or one of those 'wine and painting' classes. You are not creating high art, but you're doing something creative and fun, and that's enough most nights.
-
This question is essentially the same as:
Is improv theater art?
Is fanfiction art?And the answer is: probably to someone.
-
I think it's important to try some of the time. First, it's more fun and interesting IMO. You're pushing boundaries and trying different things. Second I think you get better at what you're doing faster when you're doing it with some intention, and there can be more satisfaction in doing something well.
-
Yes. Creative writing and improv are both 'arts', and RP can be both those things.
My issue with RP is that it is usually in a setting not your own, and so it feels to me a bit like an expenditure of creative energy with nothing 'lasting' to show for it, if that makes sense. Fun, though!
*edited because there's a pretty big difference between "improve" and "improv", STUPID BOARD SPELL CHECK.
-
I think that it could be easily defined that way, and likely is to someone. I do not personally feel like I am creating art, and I'm not ever going to bother to try, that's not why I'm here. I'm here to make and have fun.
-
Yes.
-
Sure it's art, in the same way that Henry Darger's 15,000 pages of obsessive stories about and collages of little girls with penises is art.
