@Admiral - having done this a time or two myself, I'll say people will drift into your life if you're looking. But setting aside the part that is maybe finding a roommate, you can also go and volunteer or work with people to help them get their lives on track in other ways. Sometimes paying it forward isn't an exact payment, but more the spirit of the thing.

@Darinelle I used to do volunteer work but now I'm working six days a week, and I have to spend my single day off the following ways every month:

        1. Driving 4.5 hours there and back to visit family once a month.
        2. Cleaning and doing all my grocery shopping once a month.
        3. Taking 'voluntary' classes for my job once a month.
        4. Going out and enjoying myself once a month.

It doesn't really leave many gaps for proper charity work unfortunately.

@Admiral - It happens. Also, working 6 days a week sucks, so I wish you luck finding better employment. Or at least less hours.

@Darinelle It's split up in such a way that I work three swing shifts and two graveyard. So five shifts, six days.

Update: A 40 hour a week shift at my site is opening up in two weeks. Now is a good time to apply if you're interested. I mean they have spots open all the time, but being able to carpool two nights a week would be great.

Leaving this here for you, too!

If I weren't already promised to move to Boston the next time I get restless, I'd be totally tempted, Admiral, I admit.

Austin is wonderful. It's my favorite city of all the cities I've spent time in.

(I would not want to live there. Not me.)

I've taken in people before, and I've been taken in. It can be a mixed bag but can make a very big difference.

If I had the space I'd probably be willing to take someone in but, I don't... in fact I am nailing down some job experience here before buying another house down in Florida this time.

But good on people who are willing to help others out.
