I...think I remember what that’s like.

I try not to get too attached to anyone as RP partners, because it never works as well as you or perhaps they are hoping. An absolute death knell is someone inviting you to play on a game they like; what they are almost never doing is inviting you to play with them.

It has gone well for me a few times, and I’ve never broken up friendships over it, but it’s either going to happen organically or it’s not going to happen.

This is fine, by the way. We’re here to waste time and enjoy the company of others in a theme and setting that we like.

That is so strangely opposite to my experience. Whenever someone invites me to a game, they want to play with me. And whenever I invite someone to a game, it's because I want to play with them there!

It's really easy to build off of people that are enjoying themselves or enthusiastic, invested and engaged. Can see that just from how they RP, strictly IC, or how they communicate ooc. That really helps me when I see it. Conversely, if I think I'm boring someone, yeah that's mortifying and I'd never want to do that again.

I tried hard to do this with Nierzen. He was sheeted as a misanthrope, but I couldn't be a total ass or no one would play with me. Still, he was no one's best friend.

Then came the consequences... getting eaten. I was cool with it - sad because I love the char, but cool with the consequences.

It can be hard to take a misanthrope and have him change in any way. So... I had him trust 3 people with his secret. That led to some cool developments, as they wanted to help him figure it out.

Unfortunately, I don't know if I drove story for anyone. Being erased from memory means people can't really build off what was left of him.

This is a good thread. It's helpful to be reminded of what makes people want to play. Thanks for starting it

Inability to check their epeen or OOC ego is a big one with me for NOPE JUST NOT GONNA ANYMORE. Even if someone's a great writer, this is a shitty OOC attitude I have zero time for these days. These people are the worst kind of corrosive to a game for me, and I will leave scenes and even factions to avoid them (you can only mitigate this to a limited degree as staff, I find, and often have to indulge it, which is a large reason I don't want to do it again).

Things I like? Being chill OOC while also being willing to play IC friction. A good sense of humor, especially about their own character. Willingness to shift who's 'carrying' the weight of a scene, so I'm not always the person engaging or making up stuff that helps it along.

Building on my earlier post about being stood up, I think the core of that falls under what other people have mentioned. Being disrespectful of another player's time and basically wasting it by repeating causing them to wait around for you. I think this applies to other areas for me as well.

When a character contacts mine for a meeting. They meet... and they proceed to absolutely waste my evening by trying to bait my character for info while giving little to nothing in return. Couple that with several other scenes with the same player being mostly an e-peen waving competition (where only one peen was waved and it wasn't mine) and you've got a recipe for me not coming back for another one.

Which sucks, because I generally enjoy RPing and giving people information. But I don't enjoy being used as a vending machine.

Enthusiasm. Positivity. Those are things I look for in people to play with. If someone loves their character/the setting/the game, they bring that to their rp and their ooc interactions, and its awesome.

Conversely, negativity is such a drag to be around. If a player is clearly disgruntled or burnt out, that shiz is catching. If a player is gossiping oocly about how much the game/this staff decision/the staff personally/xyz players personally are the WORST EVER then I am not at all interested in engaging with them further. Don't drag me down with you.

I Will Avoid Them If...

If someone poses into a scene and pose themselves going and sitting in a corner and doing nothing, waiting to be 'drawn in', I'm probably not going to want to play with them much, especially if they ignore hooks I'm throwing out to be reacted to or acted upon.

I avoid people who pose short.

If someone doesn't capitalize or punctuate in OOC chatter, I probably won't seek them out, but may still give them a chance. They likely pose short, though.

If I keep getting pressured to do a scene I don't want to do instead of just agreeing what happens off-screen, I'm going to start avoiding that person.

They will never organize events, run anything, come up with ideas, set the scene, ask anyone to RP, but complain constantly that they're not getting enough RP or no one wants to RP with them.

They're passive aggressive about almost anything.

Have a habit of disconnecting, multi-scening, or leaving me hanging for long periods of time waiting for poses. Especially for short poses. If someone is in the scene, in my opinion, they should be paying attention to it.

Not reading people's poses.

Ask me to pose shorter. Especially if I'm already taking LESS time to pose than them.

If someone tries to 'guilt' me into RP.

I Will Want To RP If...

They are friendly and extroverted in the OOC room, have a good sense of humor, and actually have ideas to propose when asking the room if anyone wants to RP.

If they are someone who will organize and run events for others. Someone who cares about the game doing well and other people having fun.

Having a unique or interesting character with hooks that jive with me or my character.

Writing well, poses are descriptive and engaging to read.

They TS really, really good. I'm a ho like that.

It's about 50/50:

• They're inviting me because they want to play with me and <game> looks like a fun place to do that.

• "I am having so much fun on <game> and am already really busy all the time there and there's no lack of stuff for me to do yay that's so rare you should play here, too!" and then them never having time to do anything with me because they're already fully engaged re: the time they have available for that game with what they already have going on. Sometimes they may intend to play with me and just don't realize how thin they're already stretched, others, it's just "I'm having fun here and I think you would, too" with zero intention of playing with me there.

I don't actually mind the 'I don't intend to play with you there' variant in most cases, provided the person makes this clear from the start. Otherwise, it feels too string-along and just becomes a frustrating mess.

I like it when people are exciting, proactive, doing things. Bar RP is the worst, because even casual chatter should be moving our characters' stories forward in some way.

I love it when people help me develop my characters and let me help develop theirs. Lets talk about what your character cares about! Thank you for talking about what my character cares about, rather than asking if I'd like another glass of wine.

Lets tell a story! Something fun or something goofy or something dangerous and serious. Anything other than posing sipping more beverage.

I have found that I am turned off when my RP starts feeling like a job and/or a responsibility. There are limits, of course. If I am part of an on-going plot, or I have an IC position that needs to be at least somewhat active, that's not a big deal. But when people start demanding my time consistently and I start to feel like if I don't log on I am somehow going to be docked pay (--I'm looking at you, experience systems and idle freezing!) it starts to bother me. I didn't use to be that way, but I am now. I also don't RP at all at the moment.

On a more personal note--while the above can be very personal if a specific person is trying to monopolize my time--certain things turn me off: OOC arrogance, gossip circles, whisper campaigns, etc. I'm perfectly willing to admit I have participated in some of this stuff before, caught up in some moment with a group or another--but I avoid the shit out of the stuff now.

Second person posing is a no-no. I differ with @BlondeBot in that I don't mind short-posing and actually short-pose quite a bit (although probably a lot less than anyone imagines when I say that). Overly long, flowery poses better be damn fucking good (and by this I mean in a subjective "to Coin" sense, so good luck figuring that out, I guess, I'm a headache to RP with, I suspect) or I will tune out half-way through and probably miss the meat of your pose, so like, keep me engaged or make it snappy. I don't wanna have to read the pose five times to decipher what your saccade of cerulean orbs of sprinkled rainbow twilight means.

I like story, so someone like @Auspice is cool--even though I've yet to RP with her for some hilarious reason. I like collaboration, too, and I especially like consistency and not feeling like I have to keep everything together all the time or people just fade out. This is why I eventually desisted from creating IC groups: it always felt like I was the only one trying to keep that shit going.

And, I mean, if the TS is super fucking hot, that's a plus, I guess. >.>
