What drew you to MU*?

@ganymede said in What drew you to MU*?:
Sex isn't always great, but it's still sex.
Sure, rub it in.

I got into MUSHes in an odd way. I knew they existed for a while but I wouldn't give them the time of day. I started playing Imperium Nova, a browser based game with a lot of influences from DUNE, and it had a lot of forum RP. It didn't have as much RP as I wanted, so I branched out. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a MUSH with the same level of strategy and economic mechanics as Imperium Nova, so the trade-off seems to be either strategy-game of feudal politics in space with a bit of RP or a bunch of meaningless RP with no foundation as the system lacks any mechanical determinants.
-
You know, if we ever get to RP again, I know the team-up I want to do.
-
I liked creative writing and had a friend who started playing in a MU* as a way to do that and told me about it. I didn't really have any deep understanding of mechanics or genre as it was all really new to me and I hadn't TT'ed before. I just liked the idea of being able to write creatively. And now I'm trapped, but happily trapped.
-
I forgot I have a friend with some spoken artifacts of output dyslexia, and I pointed him at MU*. It was ... odd to see that his roleplaying voices are completely different in text, not just the artifacts, but all the spoken habits are gone.
He ended up being turned off by the snobbery of werewolf staff and never returned.

Right now I'm working my way back though all of Brandon Sanderson's stuff (one day I'll actually read the Wheel of Time books again to get to those two at the end...). As I read and immerse myself back into the Cosmere it makes me wish I could be a part of a world like that.
So then I go and RP on Arx.
It fills a tiny li'l hole.

Laverne and Shirley, obviously.

@thenomain Not Joanie and Chachi?

I got into MUing about three years ago as a way to help get over my writing anxiety. Also I like playing make believe.

I had cut my teeth back in the day RPing on AOL (hi, we may have played together if you were on AOL between '96 and '02 and were active in those chatrooms. Arts and Entertainment ftw?) but eventually stopped due to some real life stuff but managed to play for about roughly 10 years on AIM/gchat with the same person just to get my fix.
It would not last.
Speed up the timeline to about late 2010, early 2011, where I got into RPing on WoW (hi, we may have played together if you were a WoW RPer on Moonguard or Wyrmrest Accord between 2010 - now). It was a challenge to play on an MMO at first but some great add-ons made it easier. Met a lot of super creative and fun people and a small sample size of those who professionally suck the life out of everything they touch.
In 2012, someone tried to drag me into MUs but I resisted pretty hard and did not really venture forth/put effort in until 2014. Been hanging out since! I love telling collaborative stories and meeting new people even if I am shy as heck.
-
@zobi I RPed briefly on Wyrmrest Accord. It was pretty wild!
-
@stabeest I really like RPing on WoW, it took a lot of adjusting but there are so many awesome and helpful people. Did you play Horde or Alliance side?
-
@zobi I was Horde side. I did some light RP for a couple of months and then ran into a scene with a bunch of blood elves, of which about 75% were actually robots and noped out of it. Maybe there was some really in depth story behind this that I wasn't privy to, but from someone who was just dipping their toe into the RP scene, I immediately felt like I was missing something major and it wasn't for me.
-
@stabeest Yeah that has to be one of the hardest parts of the WoW RP-scene, getting into it without feeling like you are missing out on most of what is going on as it isn't so well documented like MU RP is. I got lucky when I first started and was able to get into a newly formed guild with a fresh storyline. It still had its challenges but from there I was able to sort of work my way into things. Horde-side RP has been my favorite, though.
