EPIC vs Steam

@tinuviel It does. I wasn't joking about games missing .exe files, and being bitcoin miners. Or people taking a tutorial for a game engine and calling it their own game.
-
@insomnia That sounds less like curation and more like basic quality assurance testing. Curation, to my mind at least, requires judgement calls be made.
Removing inoperable games, or games that have undisclosed software attached is one thing. Removing a game because a human being somewhere thinks it's crap is another.

I just don't understand where this "I don't want to have multiple launchers" thing is coming from. I mean, I've got Steam, Blizzard, EPIC and Origin already, for various reasons, and had Bethesda up until the dumpster fire that was Bethesda's handling of Fallout 76 (for the record, I enjoyed the game immensely, but the issues that came up made me walk away from the title and the company entirely, for good).
If by 'launcher' you mean 'the thing that I run to start this one game' then I don't care. I can have multiples and it won't matter to me one bit.
If a launcher is supposed to guide me into an ecosystem of games then it does matter. A lot. Especially if those games use DRM specific to that ecosystem, with the worst case scenario here being of course that if the whole thing fails what happens to the games I bought? If I purchase a physical game from a DVD I can reinstall it in a couple of years, but if the store is AWOL what are my options going to be? Granted, this is still an issue with Steam but it's proven itself to be reliable and here to stay - can everything else say the same?
To give a counter-example I did buy into gog.com's take on this but it was because they offered two things no one else seemed to. One is that they offer truly DRM-less games - you buy it, you own it - and the other was that they allowed you to migrate specific titles from Steam to theirs, so in a way that 'unlocked' past purchases I had made. That was a competitive advantage, and since they gave me something no one else was putting on sale I paid up.
If other launchers can do the same then they, too, can have my money.

Someone needs to come up with a system where no matter your game store, you can just find your game and launch it without launching the launcher
Oh hello, slightly younger and more ignorant me, have you tried Playnite yet? I'm about to. I'll let you know how it is.

YOINK! runs away!

@Ortallus I like the idea of exclusive deals between store fronts that time out. It creates competition, we've already seen this before in the consoles, it has always done well for sales on both platforms. They just need to be more clear about these things and more transparent. Don't offer preorders before you know if you will be exclusive, if you're offering preorders, don't sign exclusivity deals. They'll still take your game, it's more profit either way. Epic nor Steam should have any exclusive restriction on what they will sell in the long run, but making one or the other come out first is fine. In a way consoles have competed with PC in this regard, coming out with games that they never bring over into the PC gaming market but eventually one gets made.

Update:
So Epic isn't as slow as I remember, but it's more about the appearance and the 'Web 3.0' design, and less about being informative. I clicked on a few games and except for there being a lot of pretty pictures and videos, and short on information.
I get more information about games from what people post here. That's how short of information they are.
Looking at "Hades", this is what I know:
- It's early access.
- It's a "rogue-like dungeon crawler" by Supergiant.
Mmmmyup, that's it. Epic Games' launcher feels like a major company taking a massive loss in attempt to woo major studios, and that reminds me of Walmart's attitude toward...well, everything that isn't Walmart.
So an early-access launch platform with some executive's bonus on the line (ha ha no executive ever has THEIR bonus on the line) tarting it up with the ol' Style Without Substance rule.
I'm not really down on it, I just don't see anything to be excited about.

I'm not a fan of epic or their launcher, I'd rather use Origin. So for me, anything going Epic exclusive is a hard pass.

Having experienced some of Origin's weirder quirks, this reads to me a little like "I'm not a fan of having a fork stuck in my eye, I'd rather have it stuck in my foot." I mean... yes, fair, but I'd prefer not being stuck with a sharp implement in the first place.

I get what you're saying... but...
This alone turned my opinion right around on Origin, LOL.

Yeah, I will grant that Origin has bizarrely fast download speeds compared to other storefronts. And I still use it, too; there's games in there I want to play (Anthem included), so I suffer through the occasional weirdness ("Sorry, I'm going to have to verify those game files before you can play; this should only take 30 minutes." "You wanted your cloud saves? LOL NOPE." and so on) to get those games.

So what kind of game is Anthem? It looks like it wants to be a cross between Warframe and Call of Duty, like someone saw Destiny 2 and thought, "That can't go wrong."

It's a Looter-Shooter like Destiny. Supposed to have more of a narrative focus, but in the end, the point of the game is to go on missions, kill stuff, get better loot, use better loot to do harder difficulties to get even better loot.
What I played of the last Beta was pretty good. Yeah it had some technical issues, but the gunplay was pretty fantastic.
-
@Thenomain Having been on the closed alpha and the VIP weekend, my general impression thus far is that Anthem plays very much like Mass Effect's multiplayer mode, except with flight, much larger maps, and a Destiny-style loot mechanic. Interspersed with the ghostly remains of a single-player Bioware RPG between missions to advance the plot.
I like ME multiplayer, the NPC/plot stuff I've seen so far was enjoyable, and the flight is really fun if you have a controller. (It is flaming garbage with keyboard and mouse.)
Plus, the bartender is voiced by Jack McBrayer!

I tried that once with @EmmahSue. We died a lot. It was hilarious.

Yeah, well, RoosterTeeth is making an animated show with actors such as David Tennant, but that doesn't mean it'll be any good.
That their YouTube advert doesn't even have any of their characters talking has me worried.

The fact that I cant play The Witcher 3 on PC (a game that can be played entirely offline on console or through GOG) offline after buying it thru Origin made me say fuck Origin and I rebought it on GOG
