Imagine a space game on Arx code.

      o.o

Honestly, the Arx codebase wouldn't be ideal for it. We don't handle ranged combat terribly well in the combat system at present, and space/SF combat usually is based around ranged attacks. Plus, there's no spaceflight code, and nothing you could repurpose as spaceflight code. So for true hard SF, you'd almost do better to just start coding a new codebase atop Evennia, or write a space plugin for Ares. (Because frankly, Ares' scene system is amazing, to a degree I want to write an equivalent for Evennia someday.)

That said, there was an SF campaign I wanted to run, where the players would be colonists who discover ancient alien ruins on the planet they've settled. And that you could do with Arx's codebase; the magic and exploration systems could be repurposed for exploring alien ruins and learning how to use alien tech, avoiding security systems and hostile local life. And the clue/revelation system could be used for uncovering more and more of the alien Precursor culture's history and secrets.

But "I fly around in space and shoot things pew pew" vs "science fiction Indiana Jones [cue triumphant adventure music]" (or throw in a hostile force that wants to control whatever ancient tech is found in the ruins and has thus seized the colony and go full Tomb Raider reboot, where you want to find and repurpose the alien tech to free your friends and family still stuck in the now-occupied colony) are very different things.

(Dang it. Now I want to run space Indiana Jones.)

I want a little bit of Indiana Jones in every game I play, tbh. I like discovering exploring. I like doin' stupid shit for either great rewards or death. >.> I guess it helps, too, that SPACE SHIP BATTLES aren't that high on my priority list. Not in a 'my character is manning a battle station' way, anyway.

If you give me a fog-of-war'd map, and tell me there's cool shit to find, I will play that game forever.

So, to out myself as a complete nerd:

I got started with Champions in the 80's -- Mutants and Masterminds, to me, seems like a speedy and streamlined(simple) combat resolution system, perfect for online use. Of the recent supers games I played on, those that used the system had pretty great playerbases, and there was that edge of spice you get when you cannot utterly predict an outcome(and usually no narrative arguments).

Additionally, I ran a lot of scenes. The biggest slowdown was never the mechanics of the system; it was, of course, pose lag or slow player response. +rolls and interpretation thereof didn't take long at all by comparison.

That said, I have been looking at a couple other systems. I know that the M&M system has had several MU iterations and has been coded numerous times, and that the other systems if I use them might need some developing from scratch. If there's usable M&M code out there, that makes life a lot easier.

As for actual setup, I'm looking at a couple hosting solutions. If anyone has advice there, I'll happily take it. I figure I'd grab a yearly package and stand it up, then look for assistance with tool code depending on which codebase I go with(again, advice taken).

..and then I'll talk about my other OC supers MU idea. >.>

      Use Ares.

I mean, honestly, you just---you can't go wrong with it. I don't know if M&M is coded for Ares yet or not, but it's worth it. Just the scene system alone is worth it.

I personally prefer something less crunchy than M&M. In fact, for superhero games, i tend to prefer something more freeform and narrative-focused. But that's your call.

I second this. @faraday is amazing at supporting games that use the platform, and I bet you could get help making a plugin for whichever system you go with. There's enough people interested that at least one of them should have the skills!

I'm definitely not a coder, but I'm pretttttyyyyy good at writing things up and could totally help with lore/help files, setting up wikis, etc.

Seeing cats that aren't my PCs is, like. BARELY less exciting than seeing my own. Like if my PC kitties are a 10/10, other PC kitties are a 9.5/10. They're all so great.

      ^ this so much

    • RE: Good Anime

First off, I want to second: Violet Evergarden, Your Lie in April, A Place Further Than the Universe, Laid-Back Camp, Kaguya-sama, Cowboy Bebop, My Next Life as a Villainess, To Your Eternity, The Aquatope on White Sand, Ghost in the Shell, Recovery of an MMO Junkie. Obviously lots of the other ones already mentioned are fantastic, but these are ones I personally love.

Now, on to some that aren't mentioned already!
      1. Made in Abyss: There's a town built around a giant hole (abyss!) and orphans make a living by retrieving artifacts from it. One girl in particular is trying to go as deep as she can to find her mother, who is either lost down there or dead.
      made in abyss

      2. Fruits Basket: It is an absolutely amazing slice-of-life romancey thing with members of the Zodiac. I am really bad at describing shows.

      3. Bungo Stray Dogs: Supernatural investigation bureau into supernatural things!
      bungo stray dogs

      4. Jujutsu Kaisen: I'm sure it's been mentioned. It's fantastic. People who can see curses, and used curse energy, get rid of curses!
      jujutsu kaisen

5: Ascendance of a Bookworm: A bookish girl reincarnates in another world, into the body of a sickly little girl. This is fine, as long as she has books, right? WRONG. There are very few books, they're hella expensive, and she basically has to go through the entire process from papyrus and parchment, to bound books. All while people question these FANTASTIC ideas of hers.
      ascendance of a bookworm

      6. Those Snow White Notes: I'm a sucker for music-themed anime, and this one's all about one guy's journey with the shamisen, and living up to his grandfather's memory/sound.
      those snow white notes

      7. Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-: Yet another Isekai, but the god that brings the kid over decides she hates him and shoves him off to some far corner of the world. Good think Tsukuyomi gave him power on the way over!
      Tsukimichi

      8. The Morose Mononokean: A guy becomes the apprentice of the Mononokean, who helps yokai with their problems on the mortal plane and exorcises them back to the spirit world.
      morose mononok

      9. The Ancient Magus' Bride: I don't even know where to begin. It's so good. Sooooo good.
      ancient magus

      10. Battle Game in 5 Seconds: This is a new one, and centers around a group of random people kidnapped into a testing program? They've been given special abilities, and get pitted against each other? The gif bar has nothing and I'm lazy. Sorry!

I would love to see a Dark Ages vampire-only (so Vampires and ghouls) game.

This might actually coax me into Vampire again.

I just want to give big props for how open and genuinely appreciative you are to critique and suggestion. It's very clear that you actually care about player safety, rather than just putting in features to appease.
