      When packs of Wargs begin attacking the borders of the Dale-lands along the Mirkwood, patrols of Royal Wardens are called in into investigate the fearsome forest and discover their lairs. To this end Daveed, a budding cartographer from Laketown becomes swept up in their affairs, yet little do the rangers find of their quarry. Instead, thought is taken that perhaps the true lair lies farther afield, in an old, presumably disused fortress of Mordor hidden in the Mountains of Mirkwood, and so a taskforce of King's Men is assembled to accompany the Wardens in searching for the ancient stronghold.

      Among them is Mastiff, aged yet hale veteran of the Royal Wardens, a young recruit named Lotharc, and Sergeant Balder of the King's Men, commanded by Lieutenant Margon. Together with many others they brave both the depths of the forest and the slopes of the mist-shrouded mountains, with all the perils contained therein. Alas, it may also be that the stronghold is far from empty, and guests are not exactly welcome...
