It felt pandering. That was the thing. It wasn't that I didn't want to see women being badass, hell, women have been badass in all the Marvel films thus far. Yes, it took them too long to give a woman a lead in her own film, but I haven't felt like there was a marked lack of female badassery. That particular moment? @jibberthehut is right. It felt forced. It felt sexist. It was like there were a bunch of dudes around a table who paused describing the fight and were like 'OH! We need a GIRL POWER moment!'. Like.. dudes. You have those. Like when Thanos tries to headbutt Captain Marvel and is denied. That was an organic and powerful moment. I really didn't need the Entertainment Weekly cover shot to feel represented.

I concur with @AeriaNyx on the all girl moment in the fight. I would have enjoyed extending Marvel vs Thanos fight sequences, and/or Wanda Maximoff. I would have enjoyed some more Rescue segments in the fight as well.

Maybe it was meant to mirror the arrival of T'Challa. The only moment that got reaction and applause was when he stepped out of one of the portals with Ayo and Shuri, a few younger kids were excited and said as much, which netted applause and encouragement by the adults. His arrival, Captain Marvel's arrival and Wanda's arrival were good for me.

I am totally here for more female superheroes.
I am totally here for female characters given more depth.
I am totally here for female narratives being pushed in film.

.. but that GIRL POWER hero shot was awkward AF. It didn't feel empowering to me. It didn't feel like it was righting a representational wrong. It felt like Disney trotting out all their female characters and being like:

'Look! Ladies! We got shiny ladies! GIVE US A PAT ON THE BACK!'

I'm not here for that. Make it seamless. We exist in this world and are heroes every single day alongside other humans. Represent that.

I think Clint dying would have cheapened the whole thing.

He had a family. He became Ronin because of the dark place he'd gone to in losing his wife and kids. The movie was this path of redemption for him. He was willing to sacrifice himself, but Natasha wasn't going to let him because she loves his family as much as she loves him and because she's a good leader. That moment was showcasing the kind of leader she'd become. If she'd let him sacrifice himself, it would've made her a shitty friend, a shitty friend of his family, and a bad leader.

Should Marvel have given us a Black Widow movie a long time ago? Yes. Of course they should have. But to think 'Natasha should have lived because we didn't get a Black Widow movie' is the same sort of thing that leads to OOC behaviors influencing IC.

Clint and Wanda talking at the end gives me hope that she'll step up into that mentor/leader role now.

Eh. Clint surviving because he has a family is cheap too. You can justify it however you want, it's not gonna resonate with some people anyway. There's no narratively better option between the two.

Exactly. They did it in Black Panther without a hitch, and while BP had some awesome female fighters, there were way fewer of them to choose from. Didn't stop Shuri from going up against Killmonger, though, which was a great part of the film.

I'm relatively confident it stems from a deep cultural unease about watching a man hurt a woman--so you end up with these silly women's league scenes like in Infinity War with Black Widow and Proxima whatever fighting in a ditch.

Steve using Mjolnir got some reaction ( a couple of 'yeahs', mostly from a few of the fellow nerds who understood deeper significance. I was nodding to my daughter saying 'see' just about the time Thor said he always suspected.

And, like @Aria, America's Ass got about the same cheers, mostly female at first, but by the time the joke plays out and Steve agrees after defeating himself, it had more reaction. Just not the same as T'Challa showing up to the fight. T'Challa wan't quite as gratuitous diversity as the girl power scene, but represented.

Side note, there seems to be some disagreement on handling the Capt. America mantle to Sam at the end. I liked that part and seeing Bucky and Sam both there at that moment now has me tempted to buy into Disney Plus to see how this unfolds more.

And the Black Widow vs Hawkeye debate on who should have won for whatever reason, the real reason is to get Barton on Disney Plus, who knows the plans for Black Widow on the big screen;

Like literally, prequel could be good, we know Mephisto and supernatural marvel with Ghost Rider didn't do well and Mephisto didn't make it into Friege MCU verse (escape the dead lands), but we don't know if she'll be brought back following her sacrifice in some other way - remember they didn't show it, but the stones are returned to the exact moment they were taken too so no telling what that means for the soul for a soul exchange.
For all we know, returning it at that exact moment allows her to live and the bring in her biotech/aging/slightly immortal bend from the comics. Then we get a trilogy and its used to tie phase 4 into the Disney+ series (ETA: used to tie them in more with Clint on Disney and Black Widow on big screen).

We said we don't know how we top it cinematicaly (is that a word?) earlier in thread cause its a decade of films ending long standing stories in Endgame, but going forward there's room for way more crossover between tv series and big screen now.

I was joking when I said elucidate and all this came out. I think the big take away is the Disney+ and Endgame now has me considering paying the 7 bucks a months to watch the extended MCU crossover on it. Girl Power, who knows what may be under consideration for Disney+ though. It could be something to compete with DC Super Hero Girls depending on how successful (or not) this new animated series is. I've no real clue, but it did seem like a Marvel attempt at a Super Hero Girls moment, which love it or hate it, does have my daughter more interested (and I neither supported/denied my opinion on this, she took to it herself).

I loved Thor in this movie. I can now say that I have the body of a god.
See, I wasn't always the morbidly obese fat fuck I am today, I used to be the skinny fuck, that 115lb stick figure of a goth boy who's ribs you could count at a hundred meters.

Ive gone through things in my life, a lot of emotional pain, not clearly to the epic comic book hero degree, but i have hurt and lost and have fallen into deepest depression. I weigh more than double what i did when i was 21. I have dived into video games, and MUing and all sorts of other things to escape my pain, and then that became my pain. I have seen my body bloat and change and become my enemy and have felt helpless to do anything.

Yet I laughed with every joke that people seem to be getting offended by. The 'eat a salad' joke comes from a loving mother who knows what her son looks like in her time and see's his pain evidenced in not only his words and emotions, but his body, those were words spoken with love.

The cheese wiz joke made me snort.

Anyway, Fat Thor was my hero this whole movie, i understood him, I related with him, I never once felt like I was being made fun of. Thor was me int hat movie and I love them for it.

The 'snap' was reversed. He didn't DIE-die. They were snapped away by Thanos and it was reversed. I mean, we all kinda knew it was gonna happen and we def. knew that Spider Man and Black Panther would be back since their sequels were already announced.

I've been in a bad migraine all day and it makes me even less able to read people than usual.

Okay, so I finally watched Infinity War, because of Going to See Endgame Tomorrow reasons, and here's what I thought:

It was like going on an Epcot ride, the Tour of Marvel Movies, some of which I haven't seen and felt completely lost as to the impact. Some of the vignettes were good, some were okay, some I just wanted over with. Pretty much every one with Thanos in it, save for one. You know the one. It's the only one where he's not being a snob.

Sure, Stark's a snob, and Strange is a snob, and Rocket's a snob, and Starlord's a snob, even Rogers can be a snob, but these are things that they overcome. For Thanos, it's his entire personality, and unlike our heroes it doesn't get in his way for one second. Not one.

And believe me, that isn't a spoiler. Thanos' personality has nothing to empathize with, though I feel like the movie wanted me to empathize with him, to sympathize with where he's coming from, but that never happened. He got out-villained by his own henchmen. I don't even think Thanos was a villain. Thanos was a plot-point.

It did not help that I already pretty much knew what happened at the end, though if I wasn't already looking for the hook to a movie that I'm just about to see I might've been upset. End Of The Second Matrix Movie upset, but except for the last five minutes, even Matrix Reloaded finished its story.

All in all, Infinity War was a decent, but not outstanding, couple of events strung together under one umbrella. If I wasn't ga-ga over it, it's because they missed the beats that would've put more impact on the story, and I'm left feeling nonplussed.

@Thenomain You're right; if you haven't watched all the movies up to that point, Infinity War has some emotional impact that you're not going to get. And you're also right that IW's big failing is trying to make Thanos empathetic; mostly, because they completely shoehorned in that aspect of the character, rather than staying with the original comic personality.

In the comics, Thanos is the ultimate nihilist. Killing and destruction are his way of expressing his love for the actual cosmic embodiment of Death. The whole reason he goes looking for the Infinity Stones in the first place was for him to prove himself worthy to be Death's consort. The 'snap' was his 'boombox outside the window in Say Anything moment'. In the DC Vs. Marvel crossover back in the late 90's, as both universes are being destroyed and the realities themselves are actually bleeding, he's gazing all starry-eyed and whispering 'So beautiful...' as his DC counterpart and fellow Kirby creation Darkseid is watching in shock and horror as the realities begin to end.

But, somewhere, someone got the idea in their heads that Thanos had to be 'relatable' to the general audience, even though previous MCU villains like Stane, the Red Skull, and Ronan (Guardians of the Galaxy) were far from empathetic & relatable in their motives. So, they shoehorned this new 'resource crisis' motive. Which is stupid on it's face value because if you pause to think about it, in a couple of generations, you're back at the same problem of overpopulation/resource crush that you were at. You have to periodically snap to 'restore the balance' every century or so. Until the end of time.
