It was brought up that people have seen these games played on forums? I've personally only ever played 'live,' but if anyone's interested... I will look into the best ways to run it on a forum and facilitate a round or two.

Who knows, maybe someone can get things out of their system by hunting some townspeople.

Only had time to skim this atm, but I think this covers it pretty well? (Skipping down to the Basic Rules part.)

Basically, the 'Mafia thread' would be just votes each day from everyone playing and maybe trying to sway people to vote for somebody specific, and they'd be PMing their 'special actions' to the Moderator.

Again, it's been ages since I actually did this on a forum. And I think we played some 'knock off' version with witches and shit.

I just know there's a lot of secret/night time actions that happen. There'd have to be time limits in place, I'd think. I'll read it over later and see what we can put together!

I seem to recall it operating on just an actual 'day to day' scale when we did it. Admittedly, depending on how many people play, that could take forever.

I've played a little on mafiascum. They definitely have a huge community devoted to it and a lot of different game variety etc, as well as maintaining a wiki that has some excellent stuff on the theorycraft behind the game (which is, as you might imagine, pretty involved if you care to get into it).

Generally the games had schedules where each 'day' lasted a certain number of RL ones, depending on which area of the forum it was (some were meant to be faster). They'd use PM and some parallel chat threads for mafia communication, sending night actions to the mod, etc. But I also found the pace a bit slow, where you'd sometimes get people dropping out of the games and having to be replaced with how they dragged along.

If you're trying to reduce toxicity and badfeels I would recommend people play Secret Hitler rather than Mafia.

I used to hang out a forum which had a category dedicated to forum thread Mafia but I sucked at it lol. If I wasn't mafia, I was the mafia's most useful idiot.

But Trundle's right - it's a game that can -easily- lead to ridiculous internet grief when people start to take it seriously. You don't think you would, until you do.

boardgamegeek has a pretty big werewolf community. They have a lot of stuff in place for automated voting, role distribution, and a secondary site called that handles all the hidden information and gives werewolves a private chat and what not. I used to play there all the time.

If you turn MSB into a game then we're running a game, which means we are staffing a game, which means I'm staff again whiI WILL HUNT YOU DOWN.

No no no, you see the trick is to get the ball rolling, then foist everything off onto someone else to run since it requires no mod-powers.
