I love how we are constantly posting about 'how everything was better then' (usually the 90s) and yet also 'why aren't young people doing the thing we do on this forum'.
I'm as ancient as most of ya'll but we could dial the evidence back!
That's a lot of my point.
Like with my whole hate on when people bitch about 'music today is so bad look at <pop song> compared to <random song from other decade>.' You can do that with any pop song from any decade and a song from today if you know where to look.There's a lot of pop music and dance music I enjoy today. But there's also a lot of more obscure and independent music I enjoy. There's a lot of 'DIY' music I really dig (what they now call what was once punk, as @Coin is talking about).
I just enjoy music and I think it comes down to: do you like how it sounds? Do you have fun with it? Good. There you go.

...you guys are missing the point of the thread. Hip hop started as protest music. Now it's basically just disco. That's literally what the video was about. It's not about 'what sounds good'. It's about a form of expression that has lost its way. We now have idiots with rainbow hair and facial tattoos molesting children and rapping about it.

Also I know not the focus of the thread but like...
One thing that happened to hip hop recently is it served as the genre for the biggest deal musical of MAYBE FOREVER and that was kind of a thing. Also for the first time hip hop artists were regularly socializing and performing at the White House. Those don't speak for the music itself sure but still relevant information.
I mean I still listen to more 'classic 90's hip hop than new stuff, same as I do with rock and metal and whatever, its super common to gravitate to the music that surrounded you during that thrilling hormonal burst on the way to adulthood, and I am one such gravitator. But I've heard new cool things I liked.

And what we're saying is that hip-hop is still out there.
It's just not what the media companies are pushing or what the kids are buying.I was friends with a producer / artist in SC and what he and most of the guys he worked with made tracks about was the real shit.

Some of it maybe but not all of it is the point. Rock is not dead, Punk is not dead. Grunge is not even dead! (my personal favorite 90's nostalgia!). There was super poppy generic terrible hip hop back in the good old days too. Remember when Death Row's big new deal was MC Hammer? This is like every genre of music forever.
Also back in the good days we had some idiots doing terrible shit also and rapping about it, or just rapping about terrible shit. I really don't feel like anything has actually changed except the collective "X Music was so much better before..." that happens with every style of music since I don't even know, but I wouldn't be shocked if in Elisabeth I's court there were discussions about how lute playing had really just gone downhill and was only about the glamour and money.

Hip hop ain't dead. It evolved and made new substyles. Conscious and lyrical rap is still toppin charts. As does trap, southern, and east coast, etc etc.
It ain't lost it's way. It laid down new bricks.

And I think we're saying that the video is wrong.
The best political hip hop never really made it far on the pop charts, so you can't look at the pop charts as an indicator of where that hip hop is.
It's a flaw in the argument.
My favorite political music isn't at all mainstream, but I will admit to liking Rage Against the Machine when I'm having a bad idea. Try some Manic Street Preachers. Or Death.

We get what you’re saying. The thing is it sounds like grandpa saying “ back in my day...” completely ignoring the fact hip hop still does have a message. He paid lip service to Kendrick Lamar, but Kendrick Lamar’s album sold really well “I got royalty and loyalty inside my dna.”
At this point music is two to three generations removed from him. It went from an underground art form to a mainstream genre. The consequence is that it is what it is today. Instead of taking young artists under his wing, he’s alienating them by talking shit about them.
While he was talking about what he was rapping about, he ignored the fact that Ice-T and Too Short were rapping about pimpin and disrespecting women at the same time.It still has a message, he’s just not seeing it.
