I don't see the point of coded travel systems, to be honest.
In the media that you're trying to emulate, travel time happens at the speed of plot. Unless the journey IS the story, having to herd cats and maintain interest while everybody is stuck in a tin can doing mess hall RP is an extra layer of complexity nobody needs.

In other environs, coded space systems add a layer of.. simulation, I guess, to the game. Star Trek and Star Wars are all about the space battles and all that jazz.
But in this case, you're right. The problem with Serenity originally is that there just... wasn't a plot a lot of the time. Not one that the various crews didn't make up themselves.

“No plot but players made their own” describes almost every WoD Mush ever made, too.
-
@Thenomain Yes. But WoD games don't typically rely on space systems that force sections of the playerbase into isolation for extended periods of time.

I don't know. Most WoD muds I've tried would benefit from locking up groups of characters in a single set of rooms and not opening the doors again until there is just one survivor.
My money is on the petite redhead with giant boobs. (And there WILL be one in any random WoD group.)
-
Just one?
-
@Thenomain Yeah, all the others are the werewolves trying to bang her. Obviously.

In my experience, it's usually the other way around. Ten 5'0" or shorter wolfblooded with 'hourglass figures' and 'long legs' trying to bang the same two (very poorly played) werewolf guys with PBs from Sons of Anarchy.

Or Jensen Ackles.
That PB has become such a huge red flag I swear to god. Too many games of seeing him and wanting to very promptly RUN AWAY.
-
@Auspice Which is unfortunate, apparently he's quite nice in person.

Followup question for Serenity Staff here: what kind of game do you WANT? Like... activity-wise? Because the soapbox is like 90% WoD mindset, with the fast-travel and handwaving money and all that boring bar-RP (all of that is probably better discussed in depth elsewhere).
-
I am going to guess it is the game that they already have and have been making commentary on and asking for feedback on.

It's only boring if you're bad at it.

DSpace is what they use on SW1. I know this for a fact because I wrote a tutorial for it on the wiki.
And sure, jumps take a while with DSpace, but there's no 'oh holy shit, I overshot the planet by a lot, now I'm a week or more away from the nearest planet' which happened to me on Serenity once. Staff was nice enough to help me out and returned the ship to Persephone... was the only time I ever bothered trying to fly on the fucking game.
Give me DSpace. Nice, uncomplicated, enter a few commands and go from point A to B without worries of getting 'lost' and running out of fuel DSpace.

@TiredEwok Is there a distro of that somewhere?
I am sure it has to be out there somewhere, just not sure where it'd be. Not a coder so no clue where to start a hunt for it. Look for DarrienSpace/DSpace. Sorry I can't be of more help

What kind of slow travel, wage slave, no bar RP game are you looking for?
This is actually a serious question.

A career in academia?
