Can't help with Ares but I coded a FAE Game a while back so I can answer some questions about FAE ??? @Thenomain is your best choice for questions about Fate.

Not Fate Core. I have a decent grasp of the older SotC, but it's only been adapted to Fate Core in "Strange Tales of the Century". Which I should have around here somewhere.

I read through quite a bit of Dresden Files, and am quite the fan of diminishing refresh pool in exchange for better powers.

The Fate Point economy doesn't sound hard to code but I don't know how you're going to manage Tags. I can envision it, and it sounds like something a thousand times more effective on a website than an online text game.

I just haven't sat down to understand the moves (or whatever they're called, actions perhaps) in the Fate Core's attributes.

I'm looking at a system similar to Dresden - the game will have various critters of various types with certain abilities that come pre-packaged and others that will be optional. Does FAE still do Refresh-traded-in-for-power? It's been a long time since I fucked with any of this.

This game will cover everything from vanilla mortals to mortals with magic or cybernetic enhancements to weird unique monsters to spirits to frickin' dragons as player characters. I'm getting an Ares server set up tonight so I can screw around and see how the FATE cg works and how hard it will be to tinker with it - I'm much more comfortable screwing with already-written Ruby than with already-written MU* code, so I have confidence in my ability to tweak things to a small amount, and to recruit help (there's a Ruby coder living in my house nowadays, and another coder who could pick it up relatively quickly if I cried at them) if it's something I can't handle.

Mostly I need to wrap my head around the modularity of this game system and how to make what I want to happen, happen. This will be a game with disparate character power levels - if you're playing a Refresh 3 beat cop or reporter, you're just not going to be on the level of a Refresh 9 dragon or mage or cyborg made of magical metal. I'm thinking of doing the "one Refresh 9 character, one Refresh 7 character, as many Refresh 5s or whatever as you want" sort of alt limit.

I'll have a much better idea what questions to ask once I get to poke at the FATE plugin for Ares and see what its limits are.

I, too, can happily answer questions for you. I do better with FATE than with the Ares code it sits on.

Just a side note, the Ares Fate system is just a bare-bones implementation of chargen for setting skills/stunts and die roller. There are some Fate point tracking commands for spending/awarding points, but no real mechanics to speak of.

In Dresden FAE (edited to correct "FAE" specifics), after choosing a mantle, you start with three refresh and can trade them in, as part of CG, for stunts (to a minimum of one refresh).

One way to separate power levels without tamping down on refresh (which is certainly an option), would be to gate your stunts or stunt equivalents. If some people - say dragons and cyborgs - get access to stunts with stacking bonuses and your average beat cop does not, then even at equivalent refresh the former will in theory have an advantage in their specific areas of competence. Bear in mind that situation aspects and the 'create advantage' function of many skills can serve as an equalizer in these kinds of interactions but that's probably okay?

I think a good question though would be 'do you want to hack fate specifically or would you want something more pre-packaged'. Because there is a LOT of Fate out there that can be used. Legally, even (thank goodness for that CC-BY licencing scheme).
