Because SOME PEOPLE can't handle a TANGENT.

it's like we aren't a forum or something.

Anyway, board game discussion here. Where @Livia can go on about these 18xx games. 😄

What has everyone played most recently?

Saying the quiet parts out loud since 1996.

@Auspice I really enjoy Lords of Waterdeep.

Also, Tales of the Arabian Nights is super fun if you house rule away some of the ... uh, gender issues.

Lords of Waterdeep is hands down my absolute favorite board game ever. I -- enjoy it so much for so many reasons, including the assistance in getting my tabletop group further interested in the actual lore surrounding the world we were playing in for our game.

@Ominous Re: Food Chain Magnate. I won't lie, it can be very harsh and in a very opaque way. You can have 'lost' the game very early but if you're unfamiliar with the game you won't really realize that until much later on. I had a lot of fun with the game at 2 players where we'd play about 3 turns and then one of us would conceede and we'd reset up and go again. Played about 5 games in an hour that way >.>

With 1830, I kind of like how rough it can be. We play 18MEX with the insta-rust 4 trains too. But when new players are involved we play either 1889 or 1846.

The games I played last weekend were Dark Souls The Board Game (now that all the stretch goals have arrived!) and Nemesis.

                Nemesis is kind of amazing.

Last board game (sort of) I played was a few weeks ago called Sentinels of the Multiverse and it was a lot of fun. I never had heard of it before then so hopefully on this thread I'll pick up some more great games.

Going to be playing Tomb of Annihilation before our TT D&D session over the weekend and that looks like it'll be a blast too.

Most recently? Arkham Horror 3rd Edition (barely succeeded; we didn't need 2/3rds of the city anyway).

I participate in two board game groups. Online (including Emmah and Cobalt) and RL (including friends). Online is fresh, breezy, and rarely anything too heavy though we do seem to like Eldritch Horror. TTS makes setup a breeze.

My RL friends are all analytical minds, we can easily double any game's playtime, and that's not including learning time. (We don't play timed games.) And because they're analytical, lighter games are not usually on their radar.

When the last round of Terra Mystica with four people can take almost longer than an hour, I'm starting to look for things to occupy my time without seeming antisocial. And since striking up conversation distracts the analyticals, that means Kickstarter, Facebook, and possibly going to start reading a book.

I'm not going to suggest a timer. I'm not going to make these people uncomfortable via peer pressure. This is our luxury time. If they don't care that I'm reading a book while they figure out how to minmax the moves, then I'm not going to care that I checked out two hours back.

There are a few games that can keep me engaged. Catan: Cities and Knights is probably the biggest. There's so much interaction between turns, and we've house-ruled the horrible "screwed by probability" issue with something from Settlers of America.

Dominion is another one I rarely get bored with because turns rarely last longer than a few minutes after the initial ten minute in-depth analysis of the cards available. (Dominion is an odd duck because it's one of those games that you almost certainly have your move finished as you draw your cards and now it's just waiting. It's multiplayer solitaire, but it's short and sweet.)

I barely play board games anymore, sad to say. I have a stack of Kickstarter games I haven't played yet....with another on the way. I just don't have a group and when I go to the Lady Geeks nights, it has become largely 'hang out and do crafts plus maybe some casual light hearted card games' which I won't fault them for. It's what they all wanna do.

The board gamers meet on Wednesdays, but I just keep finding I am too tired to go. I need a Friday or Saturday night group.

Or online group. I've dabbled with some of the online ones....In solo modes. I'm so hermit I hermit online.

I still believe that one day we will find time for Tabletop Sim. Somehow. Someway.

A few years ago we set aside the first week of the month to play a board game rather than our usual role-playing games. Puerto Rico, Mare Nostrum, Settlers of Catan, Kingdom Builder, and Munchkin have been the most repeatedly played to date.
