And I think, personally, it's good for people to let go of national pride, at least in the sense where it becomes tribal and creates a feeling of righteousness in viewing their nation against the world, or sees their history and culture as superior to others.

Agreed. Actual patriotism is far better than nationalism.

Perhaps as a result of my upbringing or my choice of career interests, I've never had much time for people that espouse shame for actions done before they were born. Usually, in my experience (with Australia in particular) this is little more than a platitude. Not that I'm accusing @JinShei of such, especially to have such a thing suddenly revealed would be a cause for great emotion, I'm speaking more generally.

There was a big to-do a few years ago, the Prime Minister publicly apologised to the Aboriginal people for doing all of the things one would expect from an imperialistic invasion and subsequent colonialism. But then... nothing changed. No great steps taken to ensure higher Aboriginal employment, no public school education of Aboriginal culture, nothing.

I'd much rather people take responsibility for the actions of today rather than some platitudinous attempt at blame-taking for the past.

As interesting as a topic as this is, I think we've derailed things and gotten away from the point of this thread.

Where this thread's going, we don't need rails.

Racism isn't Tinkerbell. It doesn't need you to believe in it for it to exist.

Long given up on riding the crazy train.

@faraday I understand that after rereading it. The original post was devoid of that context, though, at least from my perspective, so it was a little infuriating to read.

@Kestrel I do, and it's been nice so far. The thread doesn't really reflect on the game itself, arguing with people who aren't at all representing the actual administration's views on the issues in question don't really change my view of the game. While I do wish that people understood that worshipping Hirohito is pretty much the same as the leader worship of Hitler, I don't expect that to change any time soon in a eurocentric world.

The discussion of Japanese war crimes does not need to be punctuated by mention of Allied war crimes, it feels more like a disingenuous "gotcha" than a legitimate concern for these atrocities. One side participated in the deliberate ethnic slaughter of anywhere from 10 to 25 million Chinese people, and the other did not. You cannot draw an equivalency between the Japanese military's conduct in the Sino-Japanese War and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or the Holocaust and the fire-bombing of Dresden.

Nobody here will ever once deny that the Allies committed war crimes during World War Two, history is settled on that affair. It is wrong to draw an equivalence between these war crimes and the ones committed by the Axis, which more qualify as crimes against humanity.

Trying to get the thread back on topic:

The game is a lot of fun. I have a couple alts already, and a third in CG. The theme scratches several itches of mine (like how I've been wanting to RP as a Sky Captain-inspired pilot character) and, at its core, is enough to pick up enough to make getting into RP easy.

Diesel-punk (is that the correct term for this sort of setting?) is a really cool genre and I wish there were more games of it. This game does do a pretty good job of it, too.

Things I like about this game:

                      • Historical/political setting that feels relevant today (I wonder if I'm alone in this being a major draw?)
                      • Plenty of action/adventure and actual stuff happening to go around for those of us who get kind of bored with just social stuff
                      • Laid-back staff who let people do what they want most of the time and only get involved either when mediation is necessary, or to help nudge along some plot without actually dominating
                      • Electro-swing!!
                      • Jazz!
                      • Flappers!
                      • Ritzy hairdos!
                      • Alternate timeline without sexism/homophobia (or racism on the ship at least)

I admittedly don't really care about the magic/dragon stuff, but it's cool if you're into that.

I created a thread in the hog pit and will be moving the appropriate posts there. I think the real discussion actually is interesting and was at least for the most part constructive, and there are some interesting issues discussed that I can see why some folks might not want the whole thing moved to the hog pit.

If you want to rip into someone personally, please do it there. Further namecalling posts here after this post will just be moved to the locked circular file thread.

Topic drift is fine and expected. Personal attacks and just namecalling really aren't but if it is important to you to do so there's now an appropriate place to do so. Thanks.
