What are the best MU* clients lately? I still use tinyfugue, because I have a strong preference for command lines over GUIs, but I think a thread where we talk about these clients is worthwhile.

Currently I use MukLuk on my phone. It is simple and streamlined. No bells and whistles. Only a single line for input and with my phone keyboard the delete and enter button are right next to each other so I hit enter before I'm done a lot.

On my Chrome book I use an extension called DuckClient. Again, basic, but functional. It logs and you can set some basic triggers (I've only ever colored my name).

I STRONGLY encourage you to try BeipMU. It has all the versatility of any other MU client and is actively developed with a helpful Discord community/server where you can go for any questions and help with triggers and scripts.

Seconding this. It is a VERY well done client.

Going to add to the chorus of people who love Beip, if you're on a Windows machine. The support/developer responsiveness is what sets it apart for me (though I like its functionality better than the other options, too). It makes my heart grow three sizes to see a MU product with this level of support in this day and age.

Given that you have a preference for command line over gui, I can highly recommend TinTin++ as a tinyfugue alternative.

That said, I'm a recentish (in the past 18 months or so) convert to beip, and it's a godsend.

Also Beip does let you do a whole lot using / commands if you want to!

@tinuviel Yeah, I recall using that when I was in high school once. When I was still into MUDs and I was a Windows kek, I used CMUD. That was so many years ago now.

Can't recommend BeipMU enough to folks on Windows (and even Linux or BSD with WINE!).

@silverfox I, too, use MukLuk on my phone, and DuckClient on my Chromebook. Both are fairly basic, as you say.

For my laptop and desktop, I use BeipMU. All the bells and whistles you can shake a stick at, and really nice to use when it's fully decked out.

@silverfox I can't say I ever considered playing any MUDs on my phone. Something about it feels off. I like my real keyboard.

My issue was always just keeping up with poses. The screen scrolls a lot. Even my screen scrolls while I edit my own pose, which I then can't see in its entirety before I send it out.

And if the scene has 3-4+ people in it... or I want any channels on at all... good luck.

I've never claimed to do it well. X.x

Mukluk allows you to pause the scrolling, and if I need to edit a pose I copy it over to a note app and edit there so I can see the whole thing.

                                  Mostly I propose like wwwoooaaahh.

@arkandel I remember those super-elaborate trigger systems for MUDs where nobody could read the messages scrolling by. The combat in-game was like an RTS of sorts.

@山口-二矢 Bwahaha, that was my first introduction to text based games, a mud named Redemption. Enter a room, woops, enemy players, text spam for the next five minutes.

I played a character whose class was conjurer. I could summon mobs from all across the mud. At one point, pretty much as many mobs as I had mana. My character could also clone herself, and equip things. So no way to tell the difference between my character and her clone.

I recall being able to break clan halls, but the text spam was unbelievable. To the point of people's dialup connections not being able to handle it. Not only could you not know what the hell was going on, people would get disconnected. It was gloriously hilarious.

They eventually put a limit on the spell. Something that should have been in place from the beginning, but it was a wiz's favourite class so... 😛

Muds were all about twitch reflex and skill. Twitch to spam spells/skills, skill for knowing which of those to spam, when to switch up tactics or when to run.

Good times in the good old days.
