TinyMUX won't run

Hi all,
Had anyone attempted to get TinyMUX up and running from scratch on Linux recently? I screwed up and broke the MU somehow, so tried to reinstall to load a backup data set, but as far as I can tell it won't start. I've done this process successfully tens of times over the last few decades, but I am stumped.
I've tried different versions, different distros on my VPS, different ways of obtaining the code but nothing works. I'm assuming the MUX just isn't starting because, IIRC, a successful start would produce a log file, and that isn't happening.
I've tried asking on BrazilMUX and attempted to join the TinyMUX Google Group but without response. If anyone here is familiar with Tiny, and would be willing to discuss, I'd be super grateful.
