Mud Hosting, for 0 budget?
-
A while ago, going on a year +, I signed up for Freemudhost, despite numerous attempts to contact, I received no reply. I'm disabled, with 0 available income, so even the 4.50 over at Genesis Mud is too much. Now, I'm not ASKING for a free host. I'm just seeing if there is one available out there aside from Free Mud Host.
I'd like to work on building a Fallout/Wasteland themed mush set in the overgrown 'wasteland' of Brazil, one of the few places left on earth lush with life, though, no more safer or inviting than the deserts above the equator.
Danke.

@DnvnQuinn I don't know about free hosting but your best bet, since obviously you already have an internet connection and a computer, is to run it off of that.
If you have the knowledge (or time to learn) how to install Linux - possibly on a VM - you can run it from there. There are dynamic DNS solutions so you don't even have to pay for a domain name. That's as 0-cost as it gets.
-
@Arkandel I have a stupid alienware alpha. It barely runs as it is.
-
@DnvnQuinn Even so - for running a MU* the hardware requirements are pretty lax. Running Linux might be your bottleneck though - I don't know if you can run it on Windows, never tried.
But yeah, if you're at zero cost you need to make concessions. It's doable, but not optimal.

Especially during development, using your own computer is probably the cheapest (but also consider your Internet/electricity bills!).
This is some info we put together on our wiki for how to use your own computer as a host and to set up a free domain with FreeDNS. Just ignore the Evennia references and it should be useful for any Mu* server you want to use.

I can't remember his email address but as soon as I get it I'll PM it to you. He hosts a number of games and doesn't charge, in fact is sorta eager to host the world and make use of his vastly superior resources that are underused.

If you set it up to run on your own machine over your home internet connection, make sure you go and read your agreement with your ISP. Comcast in particular at least used to have some particularly strong language about doing anything that allowed incoming connections if you don't have a business account.

Thanks for the help guys, while I wait ixokai's friend's info, I'll try to find out what Cox thinks about self hosting.
-
Hrm. The last free host I used (because I wasn't sure if the game would get off the ground) was themudhost.net. They've had great uptime and their admin got back to me quickly.

@Griatch Out of morbid curiosity, assuming of course all the relevant services are present (PHP/whatever database/etc) will Evennia run on Windows?

Mux runs on windows; gotta use Brazil's version though.
No, it isn't really a legit means of running a game for more than early development purposes, but it's better than nothing. I guess.

Of course, we have many Windows users. Python code is after all platform agnostic. Beyond Python and GIT for download/update, all dependencies are gathered automatically at install time.

Development wise I could definitely use my computer, but if I wanted to host or allow builders or other coders to help if they wish it wouldn't work. I don't have a static IP, my computer isn't on all the time and the ports are not changeable by me. I do see some other options and there's ixokai's comment to look for. So, we'll see.
My next question is, has anyone created a frame for a fallout game yet with the code available to build off?
