@ganymede Because that is comic... relief? Disposition? It is at odds with the overall intent of theme and makes memorial moments, but if it was just always absurd would it be as memoriable?

@lisse24 The difference between a game like Arx which is a custom game, and a WoD game is that WoD is a tabletop rpg system. The "tools" for creating fun in the game as designed by the game is found in ghe rulebooks and only requires a go-ahead by staff that whatever id thematic and in keeping with the ideals of the game. Games like Arx are not using a tabletop system and thus create tools because otherwise they would have none

I have seen this recently and do view it as a 50/50 blessing/curse. Sure you have activity but is it overall good activity? Sure you are promoting RP but is it for love of story or self-interest for the prize at the end of the arc? More than likely I would say most of these players probably start out with good intentions but power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

That is kinda what I'm saying. WoD mu's need more than what is in the book, because the books were written for tabletop games and, now, stay with me ...A MU is not a tabletop game.

@Lisse24 Neither is a mush a mud. Arx boarders very closely with a mud more so than it does a mush so creating comparisons between the two is tenious at best. Thats like saying "WoD tabletop should add mechanics like those found in other board games." Well uh maybe, but maybe not. You know what tools I want from a mush? Emit, dice rolls, character sheet, grid rooms. Thats all I need, and that should really be all anyone needs to fulfil a tabletop system that is cinematic like FS3 or WoD (FS3 is clearly even more cinematic than WoD but WoD is more cinematic than DnD. By that I mean the complexity of the mechanics, is it meant to simulate or just provide basic understanding so people can blow shit up.) Heck half the reason I dont play Arx is because of the amount of shit you can and should be doing codewise outside of just roleplaying and rolling dice. If I wanted to play kingdom simulator I have video games for that

For a World of Darkness game, that's fine if you want to run a tabletop-like experience, but my experience tells me that World of Darkness players want more than that and this desire has played out more times than I can count.

@magee101 I don't play Arx either, for much the same reason. It's just Too Much and I, being the lazy RPer that I am, don't want to spend half my RP time reading journals and running random code, but neither do I want to spend half my RP time randomly paging people hoping to get a pick up for RP on a sandbox game.
Here's the problem with saying that TT mechanics are sufficient for a MU:
In a tabletop game, you have 1 ST for every 5 or so players, and that ST both provides the story and gives players a reason to interact. You do not have that on a MU. IMO, long lasting, successful games look at:
1 - Why and how players will interact and
2 - In the absence of STs, where does the story come fromYou do not need to go full MUD. You do not need to code a bunch of Stuff. But you do need to provide some sort of bridge that allows the existing rules and environment to transfer into a MU environment.

@lisse24 The story, at least in WoD comes from the tension of drama, be it interpersonal or external. Aside from going all out making a WoD mud you are not going to be able to provide much in the way or creating drama without a ST

@ganymede I think the problem is players are looking for something from a tabletop game that is better served from another type of game in a MU. People like the setting and the abilities but most of the time when i see people complain about not feeling fulfilled in a wod MU it is one of two things. 1) no STs, 2) they are trying to play in a way that is not really how you are supposed to play wod in the first place. Wod is not a relationship simulator, Monster Hearts, or anything like that. Is a dark gritty environ filled with Bad Things and bad people and bad shit is supposed to happen to and around your character

I long ago stopped worrying about what others wanted from their RP, and focused on what I wanted from mine. I see no cogent or reasonable explanation why a World of Darkness game must be something dark and gritty. To the contrary, the best and brightest moments of RP in this world have occurred where things were not at all dark or gritty, but, rather, horrifyingly absurd.

I don't want to get into a divergent argument regarding the intent of the game's themes and settings.
Simply, I try not to wrongfun others when possible.

@ganymede I never tried to wrongfun? Anyone? You are equating it to like kinkshaming right? Not doing that, simply pointing out that if WoD MUs dont entertain you, maybe its the game itself not the format. Or maybe its the format and you shoukd try playing it on roll20

If this is what you want out of the World of Darkness, that's fine. That's your expectation. This may differ from others' expectations, including my own. And that's also fine.
Wrongfunning is, at its most basic, stating: (1) what a certain game, theme, or system is and is not; and (2) using that statement-by-fiat to announce what RP is appropriate or inappropriate.
I find absolutely nothing wrong with playing at relationships in the World of Darkness. Or playing Monster Hearts, or whatever.
I also liked The Last Jedi.
The whole "THIS IS WOD" spiel played itself out a decade and a half ago.
