@Auspice I saw this last night and had just already assumed it had been renewed ages ago.

Probably the most pure fun I've had with a TV show this year. So happy there'll be more!

With the struggles Netflix has had this year, I'm guessing they're having to hold off a bit longer now on their renewals.

Netflix/Hulu were doing good for the industry. They were buying the content from the major networks, so those networks were still getting the money, then Netflix/Hulu were getting money from their subscribers (and Hulu was getting advertiser money on top of things). One of my textbooks right now goes into detail on it. Like they were competition in a positive way. They were encouraging the networks to do better.

...and then the networks went 'lets just start doing our own streaming, guys!' and started taking it all away. Like they do. I mean we have Disney announcing their plans for their own paid sub service by 2019, now, after their awesome deal with Netflix.

I had to watch a show for class this month and tried using Fox's service (using my mother's DirecTV login) and I ended up subscribing to Hulu because Fox's service is absolute garbage. It would reset back to the beginning, commercials and all, every 2-5 minutes. If it buffered at all.

But at least that show in particular was still on Hulu. 😕

So yeah, there was this bubble of awesome time for Netflix at least and then the networks saw Netflix (and Amazon to an extent) getting money, accolades at awards shows, etc... they panicked, and now we're probably gonna see a few years of bullshit as they panic and overreact.

You mean as DirectTV Now and SlingTV smile and welcome everyone into their arms? (edit: Apple and Amazon's buy/rent TV seasons is established and also will probably continue to do well.)

Disney can probably pull it off, for the same reason that HBO could, but they are exceptions to the hellscape that streaming media is about to become. YouTube could continue to try and figure out how to become Netflix, chasing off their content creators in droves. They may figure it out about the time that Netflix has finished their transition to becoming HBO.

The question arises in my mind, tho: Who is going to become YouTube?

                      Twitch.

...as Microsoft tries to become the new Twitch (not joking: MS is trying to weave in 'streaming' options to Windows and XBox. So enjoy that in the next six months, folks!).

Getting to recorded streams in Twitch is a pain in the ass. Maybe they'll make it better. We can only hope.

I was totally disappointed and disgusted with GoT episode 5. Why?
Bringing seven characters together to go on an "adventure" under the most dubious of reasons.
Did they get someone from the X-Men series to write this crap?

Personally, I loved the episode, but as I said elsewhere ... Jon Snow is that annoying MU character who has a leadership position, but still hogs the spotlight in all the PRPs.

                                  Spoiler-free for Game of Thrones.

First of all I love the season - I watch (and in one case, re-watch) episodes immediately as they come out, so this isn't really a complaint per se... but I think a lot of the issues we're perceiving have to do with the limited number of episodes left.

The showrunners decided last season they'd only do 8+6 more. That's it. Maybe they were getting tired or they wanted to go out with a bang or the cast was restless but... either way that's what they set out to do, which put us on an accelerated pace at least compared to what we were used to, which was months of character development and slow build-ups before Big Things happened.

And now big things happen constantly - they have literally years worth of set ups they get to knock down now and in doing so some pretty damn talented people are giving us really great work. The CGI is amazing, we're seeing reunions (or even first time meetings) from characters who hadn't shared a set since season one if ever, and certain kinds of battles we had speculated for are just... getting done. That's amazing stuff. But in the process since they only have so much screen time they are skimming over other character relationships which we only get limited glimpses from.

The way I see it is these episodes are at least an hour, sometimes an hour and a half long. We're still getting a ton of bang for our buck here, that's several full feature movies' worth of stuff we're being served, and they're sparing no expenses. Sure, the relative 'rush' means some things are getting handwaved - people travel across the map in inexplicable ways, for example - but it's to serve the plot and to be entertaining.

I dare anyone to say Game of Thrones is not being entertaining this season.

I suspect the reduced number of episodes and the cutting of filler bullshit is due to them wanting more of their budget for effects (i.e. MOAR DRAGONZ and stuff).

@Arkandel Right. I'm entertained and that's all that matters. I burst into applause, as I was sitting by myself, alone in my house, several times this past week, and that's good.

Is there some BS? Sure. But it's nowhere near, say, Walking Dead's level of BS, so I'm fine with it.
