What do you find are mods that would make the game world more "interesting"? I can decide if I think it's interesting, but I can't start without recommendations. Start from the heart.
There aren't really good mods out and won't be until, mmm, 2-6 months after the GECK lands, and the really good stuff'll be probably 2020 judging by Skyrim. I'm still waiting on AWAKE to get released. Also, using the Nexus Mod Manager without even LOOT up and running yet feels like barbarism.
I'm mostly in your camp that F4 is...nngh. If the main storyline was almost anything else, it'd be fine, but it's A) very high-pressure (despite that you're going to spend the vast, vast, vast, vast bulk of the game wandering around and doing random stuff) and B) wants a level of emotional investment it doesn't adequately sell you on. I thought Skyrim did a great job with the main quest because it's not clear there's a real urgency and the steps are always presented fairly vaguely, so if you take a break for a hundred hours it's not a huge issue. I would care less if there WAS no main storyline and it was just like "here's the Wasteland, have fun." I try to pretend that's true when I can. Maybe I should just rush the stupid questline and get it done, but it doesn't want to be rushed. Honestly realistically I'm just mostly gonna keep playing Skyrim until TESVI comes out in let's say 2018.
Still! There's stuff. Armorsmith Extended lets you do way more with armor and your outfit, which is completely vital to my life.
Better Settlers does what it says on the tin.
Crafting Workbenches let me make my own ammo, which saves a ton of time hating everything.
Followers Aren't Loot Critics is probably best mod 2016, it makes all your followers ditch those fucking lines where they're like "even though we all live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and survive only by scavenging and salvage, it is SO WEIRD AND CONTEMPTIBLE that you keep picking up desk fans lol."
Weapon Balance Overhaul isn't perfect, but it makes a lot more playstyles viable and helps to slot the various weapons into roles. Also makes the game more lethal in both directions because everything gets a damage upgrade.
Crossbows of the Commonwealth is really cool.
