    • RE: Bloopers

One of my very first conversations with the guy:

@TheOnceler pages: Usually I keep my penis in my front pocket while at work,
but since I'm in the back I'm just wearing a sweatshirt and letting it
hang from my pull-ties. It's a broad-tip so it leaks ink all over the
place and everytime I reached for it I got a big mark on my hand.

      @TheOnceler pages: PENS! PENS! PENS!

It still makes me cry laughing when I read it.

He was my favorite actor until the whole "sometimes a woman just needs to be hit" thing that he then would double down on later. Since that point I've always sort of cringed to like anything he did.

    • RE: The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc

@Arkandel said in The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc:

Which parts of being in IC relationships, be they romantic and/or sexual or even otherwise, bind the players as well as the characters?

I think it really just boils down to: are you having fun? Is the other person having fun? And that just comes down to communication. And the only thing I think is really unethical is if someone plays the PLAYER rather than the PC. Like I think it's scenarios like this that have prompted this conversation:

Player A tells Player B their PCs are perfect for each other after much romantic RP and wants to put a ring on it and make it totally exclusive because they're not interested in cheating drama RP. Player B agrees because the RP has been so great and they also would like to avoid drama! But it actually turns out that what Player A meant was that Player B just had to devote their PC to them, while Player A's PC was still out fucking around. When confronted with this, Player A is all 'hey it's just IC lol' and then cheating drama RP happens with an unwilling participant who feels played OOC.

That kind of situation is not fun.

    • RE: Storytime! Embarrassment Edition

When I was in first grade (Catholic school, yo!) I was a year younger than everyone and at that age there are a million ways fellow students and teachers find to rub that in. I was a "baby" I wasn't "old enough" to do other stuff, etc. We had our math class with the second grade teacher, who everyone adored, and she put up a big chart with everyone's names and when you lost a tooth, a big gold star went up there.

Naturally everyone had two or three up there but me. I was the only kid that did not have a big gold star because none of my teeth had even gotten loose yet and I got tormented about it whenever we went into the classroom. So one day I decided that the (small) gap between my front teeth counted as me losing a tooth. So I went up to her and pointed to it and said that a tooth had been there but now it had fallen out so I deserved a gold star. After asking me a couple of times if I was SURE I had lost a tooth (I was SO SURE!) she put a star up and, like a moron, my 5 year old self goes home all excited and tells my mom I got a gold star because I lost a tooth!

Except I clearly hadn't, so my mom made me write an apology note about how I was sorry I lied, but I had not really lost a tooth. She sent me to school with it under strict instruction to get it signed by the teacher after she had read it. So that day, before I went home, in my best printing, I signed "Missus Lynch" and brought it home.

But there was no getting it past my mother, who asked me several times if I had gotten Mrs. Lynch to sign the confession ("Yes mommy! See?!") before dropping the fucking bomb that teachers wrote in cursive and had first names. I broke the fuck down sobbing and begged and pleaded, but she made me take the letter in the next day, now with an added explanation about how I forged her name, and with my mom holding my hand, I had to confess to the teacher.

I cried my little eyes out about how sorry I was but I just really wanted a gold star and everyone else had one and it wasn't fair! Thankfully the teacher was SUPER nice and she decided that I could keep the gold star up there since I'd told the truth (eventually) and she signed the note and gave it to my mom, telling her to keep it because it was a hilarious story that one day I'd appreciate.

Later on when I actually DID have a loose tooth I was the fucking Queen of First Grade and EVERYONE wanted to be there when it fell out--which it did during lunch one day. I still remember Phillip Burns asking me why I didn't get another gold star up on the chart since I lost "another" tooth, and I stood up, put my hands on my hips and proudly announced, "Because I LIED!"

My mom still has the note.

@Kestrel This is basically my life today since our town voted to remove a racist high school logo and you can imagine the facebook town page right now.

Luckily after thinking better of responding to racists for awhile I decided NO NOT IN MY TOWN and now I'm in several Facebook fights and I feel pretty good about it.

      But seriously. Fuck racists.

We still have tonic aisles around here, although they are fewer and further between than they were when I was young. When I was a kid I thought that tonic was storebrand soda cause that's what my dad bought and called it. And then soda was like, your Cokes and Pepsis.

And if I had known my husband called it 'pop' I never would've married him.

A Star Wars game where no one is under 40. You lived through the collapse of the Empire and rebel or loyalist it sucked and you had to make it work and now the First Order is here and ugh, these fucking kids. While they go around having their climactic angst-ridden one on one battles or whatever you're out there keeping the galaxy running, thwarting evil, being evil, smuggling, trying to build something that's going to survive the god damn collapse of the First Order why do they keep thinking something better is going to come around maybe we should kill all the engineers that major in death stars.

Sure the kids have their showy battles, but you're doing the real quest work/world building.

And everyone can be jedis, whatever. Lightsabers for all!

Here ARE some historians with their hot take:

"This has little to do with remembering the brutality of indentured servitude and all to do with the minimisation of the scale, duration and legacy of the transatlantic and intercolonial slave trade. The racist contemporary application of such bad history can be observed spreading like a virus across social media on an hourly basis."

The NYT had a good article on this some years back too.

I actually recently reread them. I remember hating Taran Wanderer as a kid because Eilonwy isn't in it at all but as an adult...wow. It's up there as one of the better ones in the series.

@Aria Weirdly enough when I was in high school I babysat for this family I became really close to. One day I was reading one of those books when they came home and the mom said, "Lloyd Alexander...did he live in Pennsylvania?" and I said, "Yes." And she said, "I lived across the street from a Lloyd Alexander when I was young. I used to go over and he'd play his violin for me when I was a little girl. Did that one play the violin?"

      I've never been so jealous.

I have only ever been on a handful of places but, here they are!

Project Infinity: Sorcha, Buffy, some staff alt whose name I don't remember. I did apps during the second or third staff group? Though that was hilarious since I actually was not a comic fan? Mostly I just made sure things made sense. I honestly had no idea that staff were supposed to run things on games cause they never, ever did here.
Tenebrae: Isabelle, Sam, Aerin, and Cataclysm (staff alt). My first stupid dice game!
BuffyandAngel (Aha! I figured it out!): Morgan, Anya
Devilshire: Marley, Claire, Anna, Abigail, Mandi, Drynwyn (staff alt)
String Theory: Sabrina. Didn't play there very long.
Star Wars Sagas: Trilony. Didn't play there long because the game imploded after the movie arc. This is also where I learned to hate roster characters.
      Stranger Than Fiction: Clara
Arx: Sabella (everyone's favorite), Adora (no one's favorite), Miella (for a hot second), Gretchen (the one and only!), Korka (The one everyone either hates or loves there is no inbetween!)
      Gray Harbor: Clarissa

I was on The Reach for like a hot second. I don't even remember my character name. I was in one big plot related scene where I questioned the wrong person? Honestly, I had no idea what was going on or who was who. And then I had people paging me telling me not to do that or I'd be shunned and people paging me thanking me for standing up to them and I was like, ugh, this seems like lots o' drama and never logged in again.

I would've played more places, but @HelloRaptor never showed me how to make a Mage that could turn people into lawn chairs like he promised! Also jesus christ, you people and your WoD rule discussions. So complicated!

    • RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff

We just bought a new house. It needs a lot of work, but it's way better than the one bedroom place we were in that was super tiny. Way too tiny for two people, definitely too tiny for four people. But as a result my kids are NOT used to stairs and this thing has stairs everywhere: front porch, back porch, going to the second floor and basement!

My parents dropped off a set of really cute pink chairs and tables for the kids to have outside. Since the back deck is not up to code I asked that they take them out to the front porch so they can people watch or even better the side yard.

As I walked through the living room I see my four year old move her chair to the edge of the stairs and sit. I start to run and put my hand on the screen door handle as she tips backwards and falls, hitting forehead first, twisting, then flipping down six old fashioned 60's concrete stairs.

I honestly thought I was watching her die or break all her arms and legs or her neck. She was screaming, my older daughter went tearing through the house screaming for my husband, the teenager across the street who watched it all went yelling inside for his mom to help, and I scooped her up and started checking her all over. No broken arms, no broken legs, no broken collarbone. As I walked her to the garage to get the car in case we had to go to the ER she cracked a joke and started laughing.

The only injury she had and I have NO IDEA how is a scrape her to forehead. It's not even bad. That's it. Pediatrician just had us watch her for four hours for any weird behavior (vomiting, dizziness, lethargy) because that's all the hospital would do. She's absolutely, totally fine.

This kid, man. Clumsy as hell but somehow, SOMEHOW has managed to avoid any serious injury. But today we're going to go learn the drive to the local hospital. Just in case.

    • RE: New Face 4 New Games

@Joyeuse said in New Face 4 New Games:

@Roz Arx is one I've been looking at a lot, it's just kind of incredibly intimidating to try and hop into, haha. Especially as someone who doesn't really want to play a roster character, but also is scared to try to add something that might be unwelcome to the lore.

I was very, very against roster characters, but I have to say I think taking one on Arx as your first PC is a big plus because it comes with built in hooks and family. And there's no requirement to like, stick with it if you don't like it. So, it's a great, pre-made starting point to get used to the game and see what theme is like and what interests you. Then making an OC will be that much better because you'll know where you want to fit and what you want out of it. But from my experience, making an OC without knowing the theme very well can be very isolating.

But seriously, there's no pressure or stigma to stick with a PC, roster or OC, if you just aren't clicking.

Even better: there are actually more pyramids in Nubia than in Egypt. However there are a lot more people with dark skin there than in Egypt so it was thought for a long, long, long time by archaeologists (George Reisner was the wooorst) that they couldn't possibly have had a real society there and anything of value that was there was stolen from Egypt.

Africa, as a whole, really gets shit on due to racism in all kinds of ways. That's also why we know more about Neanderthals than we do about Early Man because Neanderthals were in Europe. Where white people are. And Early Man is not.

      Good times!
