    • RE: Potential Buffy Game

@arkandel said in Potential Buffy Game:

Splitting up the playerbase geographically, especially in niche MU* I'd expect to have fewer logins, is never a good idea in my opinion.

Yeah, you're already going to have the issue where Buffy lends itself to cliques ala the Scooby Gang. Splitting the player base up even more isn't a good idea.

    • RE: How to Escape the OOC Game

I am consistently surprised how often people give out their real names on games, though. Like, not even just the really young kids that didn't live through the "they could be an axe murderer!" good times of the early internet, older people that should know better giving out links to their real name gmail accounts. It's really easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when you're with a gaming group you like, but until you know people for a long, long, long time it's still really risky. Someone I know participated in a secret santa on an online forum and had a guy show up at her house. A lot. Restraining order time a lot. After that rules got changed and only the person running it and the person you were assigned to got your address. BUT STILL! It's so, so risky.

I actually have an app on my phone called Hiya that will tell me if it's a spoofed/scam number. It's great! The spoofed numbers were really frustrating since I'd worry it was my kids' daycare calling since it would look like a local number. Now there's a little note under those numbers that says like: suspected scammer so I don't rush to answer it.

I don't think I ever did point it out! Which is why it was so weird. I was mad because in the one plot I was in, someone showed up halfway through, didn't need to roll fear (half of us had failed it and spent the whole time unable to do anything but pose being scared--and no one pointed out we could've spent a karma to reroll it!), and of course, was the hero of the night.

I was Clara. And I was creeping up on Griffin's votes, which a couple of people jokingly told me was why they thought the game was shutting down.

@tek Over in Israel we had scorpions and ants that had learned to carry their butts high in the air so they LOOKED like scorpions and scared the crap out of every new volunteer for the first two weeks.

Over in Crete we just had racism against Armenians. And every once in awhile someone would fall over going to lift up a heavy rock that turned out to be pumice from the Thera eruption. Never got old. Well, the racism did. Fast. That dig was so fucked up.

Vaccinations, which usually happen on a child's annual yearly visit and/or on well child visits when they're very small should be free--they shouldn't even be charged a copay if you have insurance.

@soundofserenity Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what got us all talked to. But instead of a constructive conversation, it was just all over the place accusatory "why do you hate the game/why do you hate Griffin" etc. Just for me and the other girl, though. The guy that got talked to about it got a very different conversation, funnily enough.

    • RE: What is a MU*?

To me a MUSH is basically just cooperative storytelling in a text-based medium. I guess it could have pictures or some visual aspect, but at its core you need the people to drive the story and make things happen and interact with one another.

Whereas a MUD is a hack and slash that sure you could do some RP with other people, but you could also just go around killing orcs or whatever and never have to interact with another person if you didn't want to. You could be the only one playing the game and it wouldn't matter because you're not telling a story you're playing one.

I think a lot of people don't take tooth infections seriously and let me tell you IT IS SUPER SERIOUS! That is an infection NEAR YOUR BRAIN! You need to get on antibiotics ASAP even if your dentist can't see you. It's one of those things that I've even run into with my dentist (who I love) when I called about my implant failing (which is a thing that can happen)!

I happened to get one of the new receptionists on the phone who was like "I think he can see you in two days." To which I said, "So are you calling in a prescription for antibiotics right now so I can be on them until then? Because as I said, there's pus and that means that there is bone loss happening." There was a long silence and she said, "Right. Uh. Can you get here in twenty minutes?"

But it still freaked me out and I mentioned it to my dentist because if I hadn't known that things could've gone very badly. Even if the infection hadn't gone to 11, I still would've been looking at bone loss around the site. As it was, they ended up being able to save the implant (thank god because taking it out would've likely broken my jaw) and everything was fine.

Advocate for yourself though, as with anything! And I also brush after every meal and floss. My husband who has to be reminded to brush, eats more sugary things than I do and never flosses never has a fucking cavity ever. Fuck tooth genes, man.

During a dungeon crawl the DM described the hoard we had stumbled across with detailed descriptions of jeweled swords, crowns, coins, doomsday machines, and inexplicably a penguin.

At which point the Halfling rogue we had with us looked left, looked right, then picked up the penguin and ran off with it.

Then he cast animal awareness and it became Hubert the clove smoking penguin that wrote depressing poetry about being the only penguin that could talk.

      It was great.

    • RE: What do you eat?

I pretty much only ate cheeseburgers before I was married and had kids. Now that I've got kids on solid food I find myself trying to make sure they have a LOT more healthy choices than I did as a latch-key kid that grew up on Kraft mac and cheese or just regular old pasta. Though there were plenty of nights raiding the snack drawer was as close to dinner as we got.

We've switched from white bread to wheat and try to buy things that only have that whole grain logo on it. The kids do not seem to mind in the least. We also try to eat more chicken than we do beef, but because one of my kids is slightly anemic we do try to do beef tacos along with some other iron supplemented foods every other week or so. We've utterly convinced them that soda is gross and they only get juice if they go to a birthday party to keep sugars down. And we do our best to get them to eat veggies and fruits. I never ever EVER ate fish and now we try to work in some salmon every week. Which they won't touch but someday I'll land a recipe they like. I'm looking forward to them being older and having steadier diets so that we can join a local meat share that I've heard good things about. But right now it's still such a crapshoot on whether or not they'll eat something that we do have a reserve of frozen chicken nuggets and hotdogs on hand. While my youngest will at least TRY food, my oldest has been known to go on hunger strikes if we try to feed her something horrible like, oh I don't know, cheese lasagna. The horror.

The biggest challenge to buying health things is that produce is so damn expensive. So, it can sometimes make me hesitant to spend the extra money on something I'm not sure they'll eat. I'm told this will get better in a couple of years but right now yeesh. I'm looking forward to Impossible Burger going more mainstream because I do think they'll like it. Right now we do a lot of shopping at Trader Joes and they have some amazing bean burgers that I am just in love with and we try to hit up the farmers markets in the spring and summer so we're shopping local. A lot of them do fish now too, which is awesome. But I do try to be aware of the environmental impact of things these days cause holy shit does that terrify me for my kids.

      There was also:

Fighter1: Is anyone checking for traps?
Fighter2: I think the halfling can do something like that.
Fighter1: But is he doing it?!?!
Wizard: Just stay at the back if you're afraid of traps.
Rogue1: Yeah don't worry about it.
Fighter1: WHY IS NO ONE CHECKING FOR TRAPS?!
      Fighter1 has left.
      Rogue2: Hey I found a trap!

@Taika we did this with my oldest when she was eleven weeks old to meet my mother-in-law who was basically only alive because of chemo. Take pictures if you can. In the end she was just holding on long enough to meet her first granddaughter and passed about a week after we had to go back home. But we absolutely treasure the moments we had with her and we named our second after her.

It's a really rough thing to go through and I'm sorry to hear you and your family are having to do it 😞

Skiplagged and Hopper are two great iOS apps that will watch fares for you and tell you when the best time to buy is based on when you think you're going to go. Skiplagged also has a website and has been the source of some pretty cheap flights for me in the past.
