RE: Development Thread: Sacred Seed
@pyrephox
Yeah I don't think staff should be obligated to support plots for random street sweepers if what they want to run is the high magic intrigue game. That's just going to lead to dilution of resources and frustration for both players and STs. But I do want games to be upfront and blunt about what they are interested in elevating as important characters. Most L&L games are all about nobles from a utility standpoint and that's fine. It's the encouragement of characters that aren't actually entities unto themselves where they typically lose me. -
RE: Development Thread: Sacred Seed
I'll confess I'm just not a person who LIKES traditional L&L games so the following should be taken with a grain of salt. It's possible this is just for a different audience than I inhabit and that's fine (I always feel like I'm in a slightly different demographic than a lot of players when I do end up on fantasy games, but the people who like L&L seem to REALLY dig it).
One of my big frustrations with these games though is the feeling that commoners are essentially accessory pcs to nobility, who can't really pursue impactful stories of their own, or do things without faction approval. I wonder why they're even playable characters at all, in a lot of cases. I can see that you're doing stuff to make Seedless useful but unsure how they're useful as independent entities rather than as some noble's knight etc.
I don't mind being a low power character but I never approach my bits as a supporting player in someone else's story.
Anyhow this looks quite interesting even if maybe not entirely for me.

RE: RL Anger
So, a fat black dude goes to buy some fried chicken at Popeye's when ...
This is A) Utter racist bullshit and ... B) it made me want Popeye's while also feeling bad about wanting to patronize Popeye's.
I always kind of want Popeye's and I'm white as fuck.

RE: My first cellphone
I'm in a very non-standard unlimited data plan with Tmobile, because I've had my Tmobile service since like 2006 and I gather I've been grandfathered into a plan that's no longer offered.
That said. I have a Samsung Galaxy 6 on said unlimited data plan and it's pretty damn fantastic. I got it just after the Galaxy 7 came out. I'm sure I'll upgrade to a Samsung 9+ eventually but this thing has lasted me 2+ years now and I've no need to find a new phone soon, so! Pretty damn happy.

Edit : Arx also had infinitely more "development" effort from its creators than any MUSH is ever going to have, which is a big part of its success.
Also, I only became aware of Arx when it was in actually open "alpha" (and that alpha seemed a lot more like a 'beta' stage, from those who played it). Like active plotting wasn't going on but the game was BUILT.

RE: Favorite music streaming service?
Spotify all the way. Now that it's getting a wider selection of podcasts it's basically all I use. I used to go in and out of it and Stitcher all day but that's becoming less necessary.

RE: Let's talk about TS.
I keep hearing the Salt-N-Pepa classic "Let's Talk about Sex" whenever I click on this thread.
I'm reading very little of it, but the song brings me joy.

RE: Good TV
Damn you NBC for canceling Rise. Damn you.
I wanted to physically punch Josh Radnor's character in the face, but there was SO MUCH about that show I loved. I didn't do a ton of drama in high school, but I played around with it a bit and it took me back. It wasn't perfect but I feel like it really could've figured itself out in a second season. The young cast was great.

@lisse24 said in Character 'types':
If they have a tragic backstory, it's unlikely to come out in RP all at once, you might pick up hints of it in some RP, but my character will likely never drop the full story.
Same and - OH GOD - if you're telling me your tragic backstory in our first scene, five seconds after we've met, my character's reaction is probably going to be, 'Holy shit wtf did I do to prompt this overshare from this rando? Edge awaaaaaaaaaaaay.' Not becoming besties or something.

RE: Character 'types'
I sometimes feel like the male characters I play are easier to differentiate from each other, because I'm a girlcreature IRL and they're very clearly A Character Who's Not Me in that way right off, so I'm probably paying more attention to developing personality. For that reason, I feel like I click faster with the ones that work for me, whereas female characters sometimes take me more time. I went through a phase for like three years where I just could NOT make a female character work, for whatever reason. It was kind of bothering me. Now I'm playing a woman who's probably in my Top Three Favorite Children Ever, though, so the dry spell is over. Things come in ebb and flow and such.
On the rare occasions when I alt successfully it's usually when I have both a male character and a female one since, again, I've got that obvious thing I'm forced to be different about and I have it to fall back on to avoid same-y-ness, until the new thing I'm playing has a personality.
Idk if I have a clear 'type.' I tend to play action-oriented characters as my mains, but that's mostly just a vehicle for plot involvement. Personality and backgrounds I try hard to vary. Sometimes to the point where I'm probably annoyingly self-conscious about it, but I like to dabble and see how something feels.

RE: Good TV
@roz
Forever sads.I was figuring it wasn't headed for ten seasons of glory or anything with its current ratings, but it'd been around long enough and performed OK enough for FOX that I figured it'd get a farewell season. Damn the man, and such.

RE: What does Immersion mean to you in MUs?
@pyrephox said in What does Immersion mean to you in MUs?:
For me, it's a lot more about setting building than mechanics. The more a world or setting 'holds together' and operates by consistent rules (even if they're complex or hidden from the players), the more that I get excited about it, and the more 'immersed' I feel in it. Mechanics rarely enhance or detract from that, for me, unless they're really egregious or contradict the 'fluff'.
I'm the same way. I can RP with a decent degree of immersion even in something like a Gdoc, which I know a lot of players can't, because there's no skeleton of a world to hang anything on. But if I feel like the internal consistency of the setting doesn't have any meaning, or that my actions as a player don't carry any weight? I lose it, whatever systems are in place.
Players who I don't feel are playing thematically are a far bigger problem for me than staff or code most of the time, I will just own that. I've been in this game long enough that I'm quiet about it and try to tune it out. I don't have the strength to be a scold in me. But, it is a thing.

RE: Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.
@ganymede
For my part I kinda wish the original apology had been left as was (whatever my opinions of it, which are low, but I'm not a mind reader so fair enough) and maybe locked, and what followed moved. -
RE: What is your turning point?
I've come to the conclusion, through this thread, that my most successful and fun-to-play romantic 'ships were based on a mutual appreciation for the importance of OCC punctuality and ability to find things other than TS to play.
I'm pretty damn happy with this realization. If I'm doing it wrong, I don't want to be right.

RE: How did you discover your last three MU* ?
@roz
I sometimes wonder if web clients that spawned/separated OOC channels to a separate tab by default would help with this. But it also might just confuse newbs even more, idk. Spawns weren't something I knew I wanted as a user until I was reasonably well-along in this hobby. -
RE: How did you discover your last three MU* ?
I came from MUDs so the text-based navigation wasn't completely alien to me, but on my first MU (Tales of Ta'Veren FTW) there was a full walk-through you could take that introduced you to basic commands, bboards, and posing.
I feel like that's gone out of fashion as the hobby's become older and more insular but, through the foggy mists of time, I remember it being quite helpful.

RE: What is your turning point?
@roz said in What is your turning point?:
@thatguythere Yeah, that's usually what it comes down to me. I hate the game of "if I take this scene now, I might lock myself out of RP I'd really like later when this other player comes online/becomes available, but if I don't take this scene now, I might end up with no RP at all for the night." IT'S A STUPID GAME. It sucks and I hate it.
Yeah not to mention...trying to figure out how to say this without going off on a mean ranting tangent about my fellow players. I am a person who's pretty punctual and tries to respect people's time. I think people who RP with me can back me up on this. I don't get this in return very often. I've gotten to the point where I don't expect it, but it still bugs the fuck out of me. I mean, shit happens, but with some people, asking them NOT to flake on you seems like a huge imposition.
If somebody does show up vaguely when they say they will and proactively follows up with me for scenes in kind? 10/10, RUN ACROSS MEADOW AS SOARING MUSIC PLAYS, FRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEND.

RE: How did you discover your last three MU* ?
OGR/Gateway's still up (I just checked! connect.mu-gateway.net port 6700) and up until...I want to say maybe a couple years ago? I still checked it for ads (and MUS*H, which is better-maintained). Hell, there's an ad post up from last month, and who knows how many have timed out in the past years, heh. No reason something like it couldn't thrive again, just needs someone willing to maintain it (and not be crazy, the 'maintain this consistently while not being crazy' is always kind of the rub').
