[Ethnicity Thread] Who Do You Think You Are?
-
I have never really understood the thing where you all list like five or so nationalities/cultures that you 'are'. It seems to be a New World thing I guess, with all the immigration? I don't understand it, although I find it mildly intresting.
Like my mother is German, and moved to Sweden some fourty years ago. I go to Germany twice or more per year (although less in recent years) but I wouldn't consider myself german in anyway, I don't speak the language fluently and I do not share their culture beyond celebrating christmas with my relatives down there.
-
It's a figure of speech for most people, @Olsson. You'll notice in my initial post I said I come "from [Italian and Spanish and Catalonian] stock". It's a figure of speech. I'm as Italian as you are German. Even less, since I've never been to Italy. I think you're putting too much emphasis on people's use of the verb "to be", here.

2.) I have some familiarity with Medieval Poland, but @BetterJudgment is the Tenured Medieval History Professor, and I'll be goddamned if I'm going to usurp his position.
I know you're just yanking my chain, but I'm not tenured, and you probably know more than I do about medieval Poland.
Maybe you could pay for me to go to Uni and get a Ph.D. in medieval European history, though. Perhaps you could all pitch in; this appears to be a forum chock-full of Rich White People.
Hell, do what I did; work, take out loans, and accumulate far too much debt. It helps if you're not really suited for doing anything else.
I think Poland had serfs. I think that; it may not be true.
It is true; in fact, from what little I know, Eastern Europe retained serfdom far longer than Western Europe.

I don't know why white people always collapse with fear at the idea of having to apologize for the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade(TAST); subsequently, they say silly things like this.
"OMG, maybe EVERYBODY might hafta apologize for slavery!"
No. No, they won't.
I hear this argument a lot, HR.
Which is maybe why you think you're hearing it now, when you aren't.
My grandfather was a pretty normal looking white guy, aside from being crazy tall. I didn't even know myself where his family came from until I was nearly an adult. He was still a white guy from America, which certainly qualifies him as 'white people'.
If I had a silly thing to say or ask as a result, it'd probably be more one that's already been echoed: How far back does it go, and how related do you have to be, before you're expected to be apologetic or feel responsible for things people did before you existed? Does my mother, if fully half her ancestry comes from people who had nothing to do with it, or does the other half take precedence? Does a first generation mix between white southern slave owners and the descendant of African slaves need to apologize? These aren't protests, or rhetorical questions meant to illustrate anything, I just don't have the personal context to answer them myself.
Finland does not have a large population of black people, yet the White Finnish bitterly hate black people.
While link posted features a Somalian woman, and a Somali slur as an example, both she and it indicate that the racism in Finland is omnidirectional against anyone who isn't all three of: White, Finnish speaking, Christian. Any sort of immigrant status or darker skin, is subject to it. I'm not sure using an example of one black person who herself says otherwise is an example of black people having special status where bigotry is concerned.
The Chinese government displayed their fangs by ruthlessly executing a black female.
Yeah, citing an article that indicates 'thousands of people are executed for drug trafficking every year - more than the rest of the world combined' as if it showcases any kind of racism because one of those thousands had black skin, is just making you look more and more like the troll no matter how much you try to use italics to insinuate that it's all in our heads. If anything it points out that China treats people with black skin just as shittily as they treat people with any other hue of skin. Equality for all, I guess, in the most gruesome way possible.
I really have no idea whether or not Finland or China are particularly hard on black/African folks or not, but neither of those articles supports the idea that they are, and you putting them up as if they do is undercutting the rest of your points. If all you care about is frothing random bullshit at The Enemy Because Fuck You, then... okay?
For a minute there I thought you were actually trying to engage in a discussion, but it seems less likely by the post.

If you want to go by Chinese executions, the Chinese are the most strongly racist people in the world—against the Chinese. It's actually pretty astonishingly rare for 老外 of any skin colour to get executed in China.
-
Marginalizing a black person's opinions as "froth" really makes you seem like a wonderful human being, HR.
You can go two for two and grandstand about how I've failed to make any point whatsoever; typically, you have enveloped yourself so thoroughly in your game of one-upmanship over me that you have failed to consider this:
I have not been engaging in a debate - merely laying bare my own internal feelings about my condition, but, of course, you were too busy going for my throat.
Thanks. I appreciate you and your efforts. You imply there was something at stake here for me; I put it to you that you are wrong.
I would even go as far as to put it to you that I expected indifference and hostility in your response: since when have white people ever affirmed the hardship Afro-Americans and the African Diaspora experience?
Never. I'd be a fool to expect you to act otherwise.

If it's rare for Gwailo Round-eye Foreign-Devils to be executed in the Middle Kingdom, then it ought to be all the more questionable that they brought the full apparatus of capital punishment against that black woman, would it not?
-
Why is that? If it were the only one executed of thousands, yes. If its one of thousands who are not also black/whatever else, no, not really.

Have you read the story behind the incident?
There was a pitched battle to prevent her execution, culminating in the head of state of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, personally begging the Chinese government to stay their hand.
The Chinese displayed their immense goodwill towards my people by ignoring the numerous appeals and killing her anyway.
It was hardly as cut-and-dry as HR would have us think. I had been following that unfortunate woman's case since it made headlines.
-
It's not the cut and dried part, I just don't think a single person among thousands executed sounds like being singled out. We can't be sure that some of those uncared about thousands weren't innocent as well, and didn't have political folks who wished their could intervene and save them.
The US penal system is an awesome example of an institutionalized bias against non-whites, probably even more so against black people. Huge trends involving thousand of cases, with huge percentile differences in outcomes. You seem to be saying that because this woman has darker skin, she should have been treated better than everyone else was, which is sorta the opposite of your general case.
Out of these thousands, were all the white folks let go or something?
-
The flood of appeals (and Jacob Zuma's intervention) should have had some effect in that woman's case, actually, not her skin color.
In general, I disagree with the Chinese method of capital punishment, which is why you'd have to clout me over the head and put me in a sack to get me to cross the Chinese border, and, also, why I disagree vehemently with @WTFE when they say how everything is hunky-dory and lots of fun in the Middle Kingdom.
The USA treats its Afro-American citizens with such inhumanity that outsiders actually class our plight as a humanitarian disaster, so don't think I'm insinuating things are peachy for us here, either.

More trolling, I see. (Hint: I have never said everything is hunky-dory in the Middle Kingdom.)

Get yourself a dictionary. Look up the word "rare" and compare it to the word "never". See if you can figure out why I used the word "rare" instead of "never". (Hint: because I meant "rare" and not "never".)

Quibbling over semantics?
And you call me a troll? Fascinating.

Stifling me with the troll scareword is disingenuous and juvenile, to boot.
I am glad you admit to saying things are fun in the Peep's Republic, however. You're a cool frood.

I call you a troll because you're trolling for reactions. For example by twisting everything to suit a narrative you know is going to cause a reaction: things like how it's racist that one black woman got executed (whilst ignoring the thousands and thousands of non-black people executed, including non-blacks from the Philippines, from India, from Nepal, from the various *stan republics surrounding it, from Great Britain, etc.), or twisting "rare" to "never" so it again suits your narrative.
I call you a troll, in short, because you're a troll. It's pretty simple.

I am not a non-black person, sir. You seem to forget; let me reiterate from earlier. I am black. I am discussing circumstances peculiar to my people.
It's not my job to care about non-black people.
Have you considered this rather pertinent detail? I am not even saying "it's racist".
I am saying the Chinese government displayed hostility towards towards my people.
-
I t sounds like the Chinese government is displaying hostility towards every type of people.

I'm perfectly willing to agree.
They aren't our allies, for certain.
