Avatar / Korra game considerations

@Roz
I know. I know. The trauma is still difficult to work through even after all these years, but we'll get through this together.hugs
Oh wait! You don't like those.

@Ominous
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se. -
-
man it would be cool if someone made an ATLA movie!
-
This sounds amazing.

I'm only about halfway through the first season so far, but I gotta say, I feel like this property is brilliant as a series and wouldn't quite work as a movie.
-
So, some thoughts...
-
Agree with the idea that it should be right after the death of an Avatar, so that no-one can play an Avatar
-
The setting does indeed matter, and having a hub like Republic City or Ba Sing Se would be best.
-
While I do like the steampunk/dieselpunk feel of Republic City, I realize it's not everyone's favorite setting. And setting it after Korra's death would increase the tech further. As an option, think of setting it in the past, before Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, or Yangchen (Yangchen being the Avatar born to the Air Nomads before Ang and dying @ 345 years before the Fire Nation killed all the Air Nomads). Bonus for an earlier time setting: no restrictions on Airbenders, since the Air Nomads are still alive.
-
Avatar Wikia, which includes the related comics and gives excellent details and timelines. https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Avatar_Wiki
-
FanFiction about an Earthbending Avatar that comes after Korra; a black teen named Abioye. Modernizes the timeline further than Korra. Lots of strong, visual concepts that would be neat to play with (IMO), like Earthbending a motorcycle.

Definately will be keeping track of this thread/idea

As I understand the timeline, playing before Korra would make metalbending impossible, and that would make me sad. One of my favorite things from the series was the people with a roll of cable on their belts using it in all kinds of cool ways.
I'm not trying to start a fight, just providing input in case anyone is counting votes.

Setting it before Korra would also make having a centralized and diverse location for play pretty difficult. Sure, you could set it in Ba Sing Se, which is a huge city, but it means that anyone who wants to play someone from outside the Earth Kingdom has to jump through mental hoops, and I feel like you'd end up with a constant sort of "is this a super weird, inexplicable number of other nation benders to be living here."
-
If you base it off the comics that game out after the first show there is political tension in the aftermath of the Avatar the Last Airbender. There was fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom and both water tribes were crossing the world to get to each other. I think instead of ba-sing-se you do a region of the earth kingdom with the colonies and this means coastal which means water benders could be showing up for whatever reason.
Justification for everyone staying they just got out of the hundred year war and everyone is super on edge the fire nation is going to revert so I was going to visit my granny in the southern/northern water tribe but I see trouble brewing here and I am a 'veteran' of the war so... I'll just hang out a bit.

It's only been ten years, ya'll.
-
Even though I would absolutely without a doubt play a bender, I do want to point out some of the cool stuff non-benders can do:
Be soldiers/officers in the Army of the Republic.
Be tech geniuses.
Use pressure point fighting.
Be Kiyoshi warriors.
Be members of the White Lotus. -
Thanks, all, for the great ideas so far. I'm putting some notes together to guide me. If anyone might want to be involved in developing this in a more substantive fashion, send me a message and I'll get a Discord going & (when things progress well enough) set up the game.
-
@Jeshin it's a lot more likely random mushers will have seen Korra than read the comics, I think. And it would still not make it easy for people to play TOGETHER and be different benders in the way they are in Republic City
-
@Kanye-Qwest and, you couldn't justify airbenders if you set it before korra and after aang.

That's a big one. I think you have to go pre-Sozin or post-Korra.
-
Sign me up for Pre-sozin, while Roku (spelling?) is off training but before he's fully the avatar.
EDIT - Alternate history the Water tribe invades the world as it is primarily made of water and they just control all the coasts and rivers with a watery fist!
-
An interesting thing to consider setting it post-Korra is
***=LOK spoiler***
click to show -
I would actually like to see a universe, where post-Korra, the Avatar is gone for good. There will not be another -buit the nations are rebuilding themselves.
