D&D Stew

As I can't find any other thread for MU folks who do play D&D, I've made my own. For conversation in all things D&D, no matter the edition.
Adventures, classes, races, crazy dice, etc.

I am about to finally get to play 13th Age rather than run it and I'm so happy. The gm plans to take us all the way through the Eyes of the Stone Thief, too.
-
I've an Aarakocra monk who has paid and silvered their talons. I've been thinking though, would it be good to put forward that I believe I should have to re-silver talons every six months? I'm using them with my attack actions, fighting against a few nasties that can only be harmed by silver or magic weapons.

I'm not allowed in my SO's campaign because it's just for their work friends. So I get to sit on the couch, looking at the kitchen table forlornly.
And they don't have a cleric. That's my favorite class and they keep wondering why they keep dying(they're all new players, save the GM).
I have a 7th level Life Domain Dragonborn Cleric ready to go and nothing.
-
@Testament That's annoying both the restriction on the game that is being played in front of you and their party has no cleric. Would it really crack the party makeup if you joined? I mean, you are there physically present already.
-
@Bananerz Well no one else's SO is playing in the group, so there's this idea that it'd be unfair if I joined in. I get that.
-
@Testament Yeah, I can understand not rocking the boat but good golly, it could be frustrating not being able to play and help while you're listening in another room.
Maybe you could find something on Roll20, and then have some fun while they're dungeoning. There's quite a few pickup groups if you're watching it actively that are free.
Or......hmm. Maybe the DM would let you be an NPC to pop in from time to time!
-
I wish I could find people to play with. I run for a small group of work people at lunch, but I have one of those nice gaming tables at home and never get to use it.
-
Last night no one died!
This was a nice change after the prior couple sessions where I kinda had to fudge things to reverse what would otherwise have been a TPK of a nearly brand new party.
-
That’s stupid thinking. Really stupid thinking. Your SO’s friends are dumb.
-
We managed to get through The Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat with only one death. That death was my bard, who was thankfully brought back once the party got everyone, and the corpse, teleported back. My bard, who was pissed off about dying, went back to her room for a hot bath and some... extra-curricular activity.

I want to play D&D.
I want psionicists to come back, with all the weird seventies bastardized mysticism that was in second edition.
Fifth edition is the best edition.
-
Once the holidays are over, my regular TT group will be back in action. Homebrew campaign. I'm playing a 7th level Human Rogue with the Arcane Trickster subclass. With the Misty Step & Shadowblade spells and a Wand of Magic Missile.
Loving playing a Burst DPS. I've been 1-shotting a lot of the lieutenant-tier charactes we face, and hitting even the boss-tier enemies hard.
-
I've DM'd through...
Waterdeep Dragon Heist
Tomb of Annihilation
DnD Essentials Part 1
Some of Ghosts of SaltmarshI've played through...
Mines of Phandalin
Some of Storm King's Thunder5e is definitely the most DM friendly version of DND I have ever run. I however do not get to be a player very often </3.
I will say for people who want to run a module or play in a module that DND Essentials is very well well and so is Curse of Strahd. I would avoid Tomb of Annihilation personally or Storm King's Thunder, though I may be biased.

I figure you're aware of this, but they've put out a variety of approaches to 5e psionics via UA. Sure, none of it is the 'lol disintegrate as a level 1 character' level of madness that was the 2nd ed handbook, but it's something!

Man, I did not care for Strahd, nor would I recommend it for beginners with all the 'haha this invincible badguy will show up and tool on you occasionally' stuff nor the general high danger & lethality of the setting overall. Maybe this is a nostalgia gap or something as I never played the old one, but there was a lot about it that annoyed me, including one element that made the 'temptations' of the Amber Temple feel very railroady and quickly skewed our game into evil PC territory. I've heard really positive stuff from my friends about Saltmarsh, though, and the intro stuff like Phandalin is quite approachable.

The group that I am a player in is playing Tomb of Annihilation in and has ejected encumbrance, hunger, thirst, random encounters, and a few other elements that makes a hex crawl a hex crawl, causing me to have almost completely checked out. I only signed up because it is a hex crawl. Now we just go from location to location like we are teleporting, beating the absolute crap out of everything at the location with the DM stupified at why we are doing so well. Psssst, it's because you took all the teeth out of the campaign you dunderhead!
The massive 23 players (not all at once, just like 4-8 at a time) old school campaign world that I run is fun, but I worry it's falling apart. It's just me and one other DM running the world, my time is very limited anymore, so we don't get to the table often, and the players are starting to lose interest.
-
WOTC has kind of admitted that their survivalist aspirations in their 5e modules and the way they designed the ranger were poorly handled. That's one of the reasons a lot of DMs house rule the hex crawl of Storm King's Thunder, ToA and Out of the Abyss.
Personally I enjoy the Hex crawl I just dislike that having a ranger negates it completely.

Yeah, and they're okay. I got nothing against them. They just don't thrill me the way the goofy "you must learn to meditate until you can sense the psionic energy infusing your body, then meditate more until you learn to movie it" fluff and the bizarre activation failure chance powers had back in second edition. It was bonkers, but in a cheerfully naive way I couldn't help appreciating.

Oh yeah, the hilarious flip-side of the afforementioned 'disintegrate at level 1' was the fact you could fail and dust yourself. I had that book when I was... I want to say about 10? Crazy shit.
