@TheOnceler Correct. I havent read a book since I was nine. Let's keep it constructive; this isnt the Hog pit.
If you honestly believe that some fear of PC outcry is preventing authors from writing anything 'too far beyond cute bunnies having birthday parties' then I for reals don't know how to go about replying to an opinion so, so, so bizarrely off base.
Then again, leave it to edgelords to complain about other people being sensitive.
-
@TheOnceler I think you should go back to read the thread.
Somewhere past the "chugga" and "chugga" and "toot" and "toot" you'll find that the fuzzy bunnies comment was not written by me. You will also find that I agreed with the hyperbole that authors are concerned about cancel culture, which was agreed to by a published author.
What exactly are you wishing to achieve? If you want to be rude about which cultural approaches to counter culture are or are not valid, feel free to open your own Hog Pit thread about edgelords and books about duckies driving tugboats, please.
Keep it constructive.
-
@TheOnceler Well for one, universities cancel anthologies sometimes based on the fear of backlash over an author's contribution based on things they've written that have upset the internet as well. I mean, If it's too hard for you to go Google authors that have cancelled/delayed their written works due to outcry on Twitter that fictional depictions of what-the-fuck-ever in their novels mean they are flaming bigots to be shunned - that's on you, I guess? Idk. This is a conversation, not a lecture. If you're curious about a supposed phenomenon, go read about it instead of throwing a fit with your hands on your metaphorical hips like a 5 year old.

@faraday Sheridan was better anyways than Sinclair.

Well, I’m not sure what you normally read but I don’t think Blood and Guts in High School is going to make it to best seller lists, and no one is putting on The Crackwalker these days on campuses.

Agreed. I'm partial to Sheridan taking those moments to equate hard work and Minbari relations to his love of baseball, or proselytizing on a lesson his father taught him when trying to explain abstract concepts to G'Kar.
-
@faraday is 100% on point with this one. Like, I get the argument people make about the time/effort/artistry/craft/etc. of novel-writing vs. roleplaying, but I'm honestly at a point in my life where I'm
happyadamantly advocating for spades to be called spades. Saying 'roleplaying isn't writing' is not more correct than saying 'roleplaying is not the same process as novel-writing' and if that's what she meant, that's what she should have said, in order to avoid people writing things about written games like 'this isn't writing'. -
The only "cancelling" I can think of recently is people being pissed off at Rowling, and that's not because of anything in her novels. It's because she's a shitty fucking TERF.

Sometimes cancelling isn't even about trying to virtue signal or whatever hip young lingo the edgy kids are throwing around these days.
I personally can't enjoy Harry Potter references or Quentin Tarantino movies anymore the way I used to since learning certain things about the creators. It just makes me sad. It fills me with a sense of disappointment. Like how am I going to look at Uma Thurman being a badass on screen knowing that behind it she was having a completely godawful time doing this?
I don't think anyone's a bad person if they don't "cancel" things made by creators they disagree with; everyone's entitled to their own coping mechanism and I know plenty of people say they still enjoy Lovecraft's books or whatever even though they know he was an abominable racist and are able to separate a work from its creator and take ownership of it for their own interpretation. Personally I can't. For me there's a similar emotional kickback to having to think about an ex — it just makes me nauseous.
Tangent and not targeting this post to shit on anyone who's made any kind of point on this thread about anything; I think "cancel culture" is a complex and emotive topic with valid nuanced positions on more than one side of the debate. I'd shudder to boil down and simplify this to any kind of good and bad dichotomy, in either direction.
I also think the point @Pandora made about the way people receive and perceive antagonistic roleplay, using the "cancellation" of authors as a comparison, shouldn't be missed in furore over the latter very heated topic.
-
The conversation was very specifically about authors being penalized or side-lined for their works of fiction, not whatever harebrained interpretation of their political views is being flogged this week - so can we just not ruin the thread with this again? Amélie Wen Zhao, Julia Crouch, Phillip Pullman, etc. & so on. Authors writing pretendy shit and getting internet-rocks thrown at them.
-
Philip Pullman is an atheist who literally wrote an anti-establishment book series for children about killing God and challenging religious dogma and oppression. Before it was cool.
If you think he gives a toss whether some internet people are throwing rocks at him, you're misinformed.
He actively enjoys it and baits Christians to take more shots at him.
"I've been surprised by how little criticism I've got. Harry Potter's been taking all the flak. I'm a great fan of J.K. Rowling, but the people - mainly from America's Bible Belt - who complain that Harry Potter promotes Satanism or witchcraft obviously haven't got enough in their lives. Meanwhile, I've been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God." — Phillip Pullman, 2003
Now there's a man who understands — and welcomes — repercussions for his opinions. If taking a stand was easy, everyone would do it.
Addendum: This has 0 to do with RPers being treated like OOC villains for being IC villains, but I was annoyed enough by his inclusion in that group that I felt the need to mention.

Re: antagonism/playing the bad guy/being cast as the bad guy by someone else/similar circumstances:
I'm up for this when I'm up for it, which is actually the vast majority of the time. How it develops -- though I very loudly obviously insist on it being discussed if it's going to become the bulk of/front and center in my RP face on the regular -- can vary somewhat, but it's entirely viable... when I'm up for it.
When I am not up for it, I am seriously not fucking having it.
Flawed/etc. I'm always fine with. Being a screwup is fine.
Having my character turned into something they're not -- something that I have no interest in playing, and that I am not portraying IC -- by others? Nope.
It's the ultimate 'no sell', and there's good reason to be irritated by it.

Also, His Dark Materials isn't just pretendy stuff. It's heavily political, for exactly these reasons. It's like saying people are getting mad at China Mieville for writing pretend stuff. Yeah, it's pretend stuff that's hardcore Marxist. Art can be very political!

am I the only person who was already mad at JK Rowling for being a shitty writer?
-
So, I didn't read the last four pages, and while I adore you all, I don't think it'd be a good use of my time.
ANYWAY, I wasn't trying to equate authors = RPing, though I get totally why it was read that way and feel it's a valid conversation (again?) for other to take on.
I was focusing on how it's fun to do terrible things to characters.
Excuse me as I go over here thanks.

Welcome to msb.
But to that point: I love to do the same.
Unfortunately a lot of people don't and/or treat you like you're an attention whore if you do so I'm often super hesitant to do terrible things to my PCs these days unless I'm very comfortable in an environment. -
I take no responsibility for this derail
