LFS: Eclipse Phase MUX

  • Coder

Looking for coders, designers, and writers for Eclipse Phase MUX. I am developing a game based on the Eclipse Phase universe, RP Encouraged/borderline enforced. All hardcoded systems, with frequent admin and player run plots. I am in early closed development.

Eclipse Phase is a roleplaying game of transhuman conspiracy and horror. Eclipse Phase MUX begins in AF 16 (After fall +16) or approximately 2216AD. Initial setting will be Luna/Earth habitats, with plans to expand as the game grows.

    Requirements:

    • Experienced with Python.
    • Experienced and mature MUD/MUSH/MOO/MUX admin/coder/builder.
    • Experienced with Git.
    • Django experience is a plus.
    • Evennia codebase experience is a huge plus.

Writers: You don't need to be particularly good at coding or building, but you do need to be incredibly thematic. You would be assisting myself and the other admin with descriptions and theme.

Please email me with a short blurb of your background, both coding and building experience, what attracts you to working on this project, and any work samples you believe would be relevant. (Writing an IC RP in theme, code samples, etc.)

A little about the Eclipse Phase Theme, from the game manuals:

Your mind is software. Program it.
Your body is a shell. Change it.
Death is a disease. Cure it.
    Extinction is approaching. Fight it.

Eclipse Phase is a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game of transhuman conspiracy and horror. Humans are enhanced and improved, but humanity is battered and bitterly divided. Technology allows the reshaping of bodies and minds and liberates us from material needs, but also creates opportunities for oppression and puts the capability for mass destruction in the hands of everyone. Many threats lurk in the devastated habitats of the Fall, dangers both familiar and alien.

We humans have a special way of pulling ourselves up and kicking ourselves down at the same time. We’d achieved more progress than ever before, at the cost of wrecking our planet and destabilizing our own governments. But things were starting to look up.
With exponentially accelerating technologies, we reached out into the solar system, terraforming worlds and seeding new life. We reforged our bodies and minds, casting off sickness and death. We achieved immortality through the digitization of our minds, resleeving from one biological or synthetic body to the next at will. We uplifted animals and AIs to be our equals. We acquired the means to build anything we desired from the molecular level up, so that no one need want again.
Yet our race toward extinction was not slowed and in fact received a machine-assist over the precipice. Billions died as our technologies rapidly bloomed into something beyond control … further transforming humanity into something else, scattering us throughout the solar system, and re-igniting vicious conflicts. Nuclear strikes, biowarfare plagues, nanoswarms, mass uploads … a thousand horrors nearly wiped humanity from existence. We still survive, divided into a patchwork of restrictive inner system hypercorp-backed oligarchies and libertarian outer system collectivist habitats, tribal networks, and new experimental societal models. We have spread to the outer reaches of the solar system and even gained footholds in the galaxy beyond. But we are no longer solely “human” … we have evolved into something simultaneously more and different— something transhuman.

    Milestone 0 complete! - 31DEC2016

All the prerequisites such as lookup tables, information to spawn all the morphs, etc is done. Getting into CGen (Milestone 1) in earnest now. Target for completion is 01FEB2017.

I am still looking for at least one more experienced coder and as many writers that are interested to assist on this project.
Email me at eclipsephasemux (at) outlook (dot) com if you would be interested in assisting.

  • Will you be using the RPG rules for Eclipse Phase, or using another set of rules?

  • Coder

@Misadventure I am writing the module to use the RPG rules, however some modification/simplification to support hardcoded systems will be necessary I believe. Definitely something I'll discuss with the team as we progress and start building some of the more applicable systems.

I think taking the rules as present in the book and simplifying them a bit might be the best, I mean I LOVE the world, but some of the rulles are CLUNKY.

Also how do we deal with the Ego & Morph seperation in the rules? ( Are we talking Firan-levels of Godcode, to make that work?)

  • Coder

@Songtress Still working on nailing down the ego/morph thing, but the idea I'm prototyping out looks like it will be EASY. Really, no different than attributing out any character.

  • Interesting. I was wondering if an EP MU* would show up some day. It is a compelling setting. And using my new favorite MU* platform, Evennia, to boot.

    Iiiiiiinteresting.

I'm utterly swamped or I'd volunteer to code monkey a few systems for you. Maybe June/July?

Also are we going to be in a single massive City? (ala Firan style)? So we can have the glitzy and glam of Mars' Glitteratti and the Rusty Outback?

  • With remote sleeving, you just need to be within range of remoteing or transmitting to a body to be "in the same place".

It's almost like everyone who is within a minutes info transfer distance is in the same place, but really its that anyone (or their copies) can be inside of a certain radius and still interact with everyone else's extensions.

I would love to play an Eclipse Phase game, but, I am curious how chargen is going to work. The way it's written you can make a custom body that is tricked out to the nines, and when you die, somehow, you get another one of those bodies cuz you paid for it at chargen. Are you going to allow that kind of customization or simple have a list of sleeves for people to pick from.

I don't mind either path, but one is a /lot/ more code intensive than the other and it needs to be decided from the get go.

I was going to start with Luna, with a couple surface habs, mining operations, orbital hab or two, quarentine zone.

From there, that gives me a good location to start expanding into Reclaimer quests and start spreading into the solar system as the pbase grows.

Exactly. You can either egocast, leaving your old morph behind, and rent/buy a new morph at the new location, or physically transport via vehicle/spacecraft.

I am thinking that people will get fairly basic morphs from chargen, and they will have to earn more powerful morphs/implants/enhancements as they go.

I also have to impress upon people in CharGen that "stuff" is NOT the main focus of cGEN, cause the first time you egocast, you are leaving it all in cold storage, and there will be plenty of quests that require egocasting as the only feasible way of getting in.

Why Luna? Reclaimer Quests? Are we sure we wanna have this be just world diving? I mean nothing wrong with adventuering but what about Hyper corp intrige? Or sucession or wars?

Not at all. I could have many of the same elements available on Mars....the more I think about it, Mars would likely make a better core element to the game.

Once a long time ago in a game far far away, there was discussion of an Eclipse Phase MU* being made but it never saw the light of reality. I think the idea was actually to set the game way out in the Oort Cloud, the Khuiper(sp) Belt where there is a pandora gate and it's a station controlled by many different factions that way there was a lot of variety in character types, politics, intrigue, gate jumping, and you could of course ego cast to go anywhere else.

As to the morph's, I expect you'll see a lot of Fury Morph's. Given that the theme of the game is transhumanity, not being able to custom design your shell/sleeve is kind of a bummer but yeah coding would be a pita.

  • I think you could do it fairly easily. Start with a few base Frames, like speed model, strength model, survival model, xenoform, then add on a few trait/merits like "Artistic mods" (meaning it is a work of art), "Fanciform" (it's got a few relatively unimportant changes for aesthetic purposes), BioSynth (meaning its looks and feels, and maybe is, alive) and add on weapons, armor, tools, stealth, etc as merits.

It why I suggested Mars, lots od different places and things, from the glittering pillars to the seedy underbellies & pod brothels..

Oh, no, no, no, no. Morphs will be completely customizable. Just no uber morphs straight from cGen. I'm even debating eventually letting players work to develop new morph types ICly.

    @omegared

I like this idea. I think perhaps using the Transhuman's 'packages' might help or the Morph Recognition Guide (like literally) to make 'bases' and then give people some ability to modify it.

Creating and modifying a Morph in the world of EP seems a smidge well not common, but not like super rare either, expensive yes, but not rare.

Also why not AF 20? for the year the MU* starts in? a full decade after the Fall.
