Hiring a Storyteller
-
For the past 10 months I have been coding a Mage the Ascension MUD running on Evennia. I'm looking for a storyteller to help build and design, and when ready run the MUD. This is not a typical MUD. You don't go around killing MOBs all day. I call it a MUD because almost everything runs automatically and you never have to stop to roll dice. Please if interested I can pay $25.00 a month. The game server is at: http://www.streetwitch.com
Any questions can of course be answered here.

Good luck finding someone. I offered $50.00 a month for a coder and came up empty.

Money is a poor motivator for coders, not because programmers don't appreciate it, but because generally speaking if that's what they're after they can get paid way better for the amount of time they'd need to spend on a MUSH than that.
If you want a programmer they need to be enticed the old-fashioned way; befriend one, make them excited in your vision, get them involved in making something they agree would be really cool to be part of.

My experience with @Thenomain corroborates this statement.

I think she's asking for build help and a ST/story design person rather than an Evennia coder, y'all, but I could be wrong.
-
I think @surreality is right on this one. I don't think it is a coder being sought but a setting/theme writer with making the plots.

Rumor has it Coin befriended his mom first.

Rumor?
I'm sure his mom has documented proof.
Just like yours.

I figure that as mentioned above, a coder is unlikely to be motivated by this, many such people code professionally so that would be what, an hours wages? That is not really enough cash to incentize anyone apart from a student but is likely to add a weird dynamic with anyone who might be genuinely interest in staffing on your game.
-
I sure wouldn't do anything custom at that rate, but I might sell somebody a chargen at around $50 if I thought there was enough of a market (I doubt there is personally) that I could sell a half dozen copies.

@Streetwich is looking for someone to basically, tell stories for some monthly pocket money. And it's even in a system lots of people are familiar with, Mage the Ascension, and might actually love to do even for free. I don't think it's the same as asking for a coder.
True, this would mean they're working within someone else's vision, and a good question is, how much limitation will this impose? Still, it feels like there's far more space for creativity here, than when coding a game.
This feels especially nice if everything is already coded. @Streetwitch isn't even asking for a busywork staffer, but a storyteller. That's the meat of the hobby, the fun stuff. And they're paying for it. Pretty nice.
I'm not a good candidate because I don't know Mage and wouldn't have time for this, but someone who's already into Mage and just looking for a chance to write stories in it, why not. At least it's not some obscure setting that has a limited market.
-
@Streetwitch Can you give an idea of expectations? I'm assuming the "build and design" includes writing plot/stories, as well as writing up room descs and things like that? Do you have a vision of how many hours per week/month you'd expect? How many rooms need desc'd? Etc?
-
I got a feeling the OP meant they want someone to build and desc the grid then run plots once it is open, not a coder.
Never heard of builders being offered pay, since the supply of builders is much larger than coders.
-
@Ominous Probably not as in high supply for Evennia since it is a different system and all that. Compared to what people normally use.
-
@icanbeyourmuse But learning how to build in a system is a lot easier than learning a programming language.

It does say "Hiring a Storyteller" right in the title. The OP said they were already doing all the coding.
-
We talked about this yesterday on the #evennia IRC channel and he clarified that he's actually looking for both builders and coders.
-
@Nightshade I know, but there are a few people in the thread talking about how hard it is to find a coder. It's like someone saying "Hey, I need to buy fresh apples. Anyone selling some?" and someone else responding "It's so hard to buy fresh oranges this time of year."
@RnMissionRun Then @Streetwitch needs to edit their post or post a clarification here. Finding a builder isn't hard. It's easier to find a fish in Death Valley than it is to find a coder.

Damn, and I built our grid for free.
