Am I missing something about the "unread" thing?
-
So, I come here and the button for "unread messages" lights up with a number. Click on it and that number of threads is listed. And sure enough, they all have recent activity. So far so good.
But…
How do I actually go to last point I read? If I click on the thread name it takes me to the first message on the first page of the thread. Sometimes (but not always) it provides me with something to click to take me to the last thing I read ... but that never goes past the first page. Since some of the things here are on page 9 or higher, this is not helpful. If I click on the <icon> replied <time> ago thing, that takes me to the last message posted, passing over stuff I haven't yet read.
How do I get that middle ground between first message on first page and last message posted? You know: the useful one.

@WTFE I have a box that pops up in the upper right hand corner when I click on the thread I want to read that says something like: Click here to return to your last position, or close to discard.
-
Yeah, that box shows up for me too, but on multi-page threads it takes me to the bottom of the first page, not to the last point I read if the last point I read was past the first page.

Try clicking on the 'replied about an hour ago' portion of the recent messages page?

That takes you to the first message of the thread.
WTFE, if you're looking for a "first unread message" link, there isn't one that works. You definitely want to lower your expectations for this message board system.

This is inaccurate in my experience. I've seen it cross several dozen pages to find the last spot I read. Keep in mind it only works on the same machine. If you look at page 1 one Machine A and then read all the way up to page 17 on Machine B, Machine A will still think you're on page 1.

Do you have the cookies-thing turned on? I had to allow something or other with the little button HR puts in that blocks things (can you tell how computer-savvy I am at this point?). When I hit the 'replied about X time ago' it takes me to the last-read.

This is the behavior I get as well. If I try to read from my phone or another computer, I basically have to scroll back through things, but if I read from the same machine it takes me right to where I left off.

I usually just go to the end (last reply) and scroll backwards. It's not perfect, but it works well enough for me, as long as I keep up.

Regarding that popup box when there's a thread with new posts., one of two things are likely to happen for me when I mouse over it. The first is, my cursor will change (to a hand? I don't recall at the moment and have no new posts to test it on). It'll change to say there's an active link under here and if I click, I will /mostly/ always end up on the first unread post.
However sometime the cursor won't change and if I click on the box there's no telling where the hell in the thread I'll end up. By paging back then ahead, I can usually get the correct cursor.
But even then it doesn't always work right especially if the new post is on a brand new page. And sometimes the page won't load and be completely greyed out.
tl;dr - Be happy it works at all.
