Is the, uh, ogopogo on staff here the one from Reno 7.0?

      That’s “Conversion Software version 7.0.”

First and foremost, we'd like to thank everyone for being so interested in our game! We’re excited to play with you all! Unfortunately, we are no longer accepting new applications at this time. We apologize for any disappointment. @tat and I know our limitations as GMs and in order to make this as fun an experience as possible for both players and ourselves, we set a player limit and we’re sticking to it.

Those who have already created charbits are encouraged to continue on with the chargen process, submit for approval, and enter play. All others, uh… suffer? No, I’m kidding sort of! Seriously, thank you all. It feels wonderful to have so many people interested in sharing something that we’ve talked about and poured ourselves into for over a year at this point. We’re incredibly grateful and look forward to seeing what happens!

We will address the possibility of reopening applications at a later date.

          @scar

Is this a "we're not taking any more apps until we finish our queue in a few days" or is this a "we're not taking any apps for a month or two"?

ETA : That's kind of depressing for anybody who apped in and was trying to talk friends into coming. Considering the game just "opened" not even 24 hours ago? But, it is what it is.

            😕

I recruited for this game, brought the thread to people's attention, etc. I was in the process of discussing concepts, group connections, etc with some of these people. But not surprisingly, some of them have RL jobs and couldn't leap on instantly this morning.

I appreciate not wanting to GM more than you can handle but this seems like an ill-planned way of handling things, to say the least. Now we're in the situation of having some people who slid in under a wire no one even knew was there, and others excluded just by virtue of not creating a charbit in the first ~12 hours. I get to choose between excluding friends and quitting (and tossing an app I worked on). Kinda sucks.

Yeah, I'd say more than a few of us were actually waiting for an announcement here saying that you're open.

I've got no dog in the fight but I would suggest you guys give it another 24 hours. You might go 'over capacity' but people will drop as those who don't click slide off the game.

This is a small plot-driven game and always has been; it's never been sold as anything else, and the intended playerbase for that kind of game is never going to be huge.

The fact that MSB gave it the hug of death and swamped the place in like 80 character apps in one day is just the way it is; if they'd set a hard slot cap, I don't think it would've stayed open past noon, much less as late as it did.

Evidently, there's thirst for a modern fantasy game, so I'd say get out there and make 'em.

I mean if they want to close the game to new players, that's entirely up to them, and they're welcome to do it.

Saying stuff like this just...feels pretty stupid, though?

"This is a small plot-driven game and always has been!!!!"

Nobody knew this existed until 3 days ago, and it wasn't open until today. Unless you were staff or one of their close friends.

Again, that's perfectly fine. People want to play with their friends, not randos.

But...let's not dress it up for no reason.

This doesn't even deserve a facepalm gif.

I think there is a certain magic in the randomness of people that you come across in M*s. I love the feeling of playing with a new person that you just click with and you play off each other in ways that you've never done with others. I think there's always a certain like, magic in creating a new character and bouncing them off other new characters. The initial 'yes, and' of developing. I love that we have 80 people on the game, most of whom I don't know, to do this with.

And I know that it sucks to be stuck in a spot where either you missed out, or now you can't play with your own friends. Inevitably, people will probably leave over that last. And that will make me sad, tbh, because I am looking forward to all the concepts and people I have seen.

There's no easy answer. I hate people being disappointed, but I'd rather people be disappointed than have the story suffer because there are too many players.

*Disclaimer: I am not staff. Yes, I am close friends with them. But, my views do not reflect theirs in a court of law.

@noodle-mcdoodle An observation for you.... Nowhere in any of the advertising for Spirit Lake did any of you state that this was meant to be a small game. In fact, by opening to the public and posting advertisement for your game on MSB, you're in fact implying just the opposite. If anything, you seem to be encouraging more people to app in by saying 'Players are actively encouraged to run plots, write spells, create magical worlds, and invent creatures'. This suggests that you are going to rely more on the playerbase being able to entertain themselves than to expect staff-driven plot. Perhaps next time be more upfront with your limitations? Your game though, so grain of salt and all that.

That magic feeling is called masochism.

Everybody has limits! No shade at all in acknowledging yours and protecting yourself. It's a roleplaying game that got more interest than expected, it's not like there was a scam or a ruse involved. Being disappointed makes sense but let people live.

Advertising a game, especially one that is being announced pre-opening, should include most of the facts you want to ensure people know. Setting details, genre, all that stuff. An advertisement should also include anything that marks a game as significantly different to those that have more recently been advertised, in this case population limits. Especially when numerous people have publicly expressed interest in the game that aren't inside your head or in the alpha/beta/whatever.

You should also probably tell people when your game is open. That's a thing too.
