Hey folks. Talk about SerenityMUSH here. Not in Advertisements. Thanks.

Fun place! Kinda dead.

Fanty's in charge now.
I can't tell if this is sarcasm, willful ignorance or a statement of the belief Fanty's specific type of corruption was A-Ok.
Tell us more.

I'll respond to this here, for discussion.
I am not aware of any player dissatisfaction with Fanty, nor of this corruption you allege. So it's ignorance, and not even willful. I too would like to hear more.

I have the vaguest of recollections that there were accusations at some point of a staffer stealing the DB. I'm not sure why anyone would bother; SerenityMUSH is the only game I've ever seen that had a notice in the login room announcing you would get a minor OOC reward for finding and reporting the many typos the head wiz made while descing objects.

I'm confused; is this a bad thing? I like to consider myself a good writer with a professional-level grasp of spelling and grammar. But even with that said, I make typos just like most other people do from time to time. Some people are fantastic coders or story-runners, but might not be English majors, or may have dyslexia, or English as a second language.
The shitty thing to do would be to say 'I make a lot of typos, deal with it, lulz!' The polite thing to do would be to say 'I make a lot of typos, my apologies'. The above-and-beyond thing to do would be to actually reward people for helping you to rectify your mistakes.
Without further context, I fail to see how a headwiz acknowledging their shortcomings and reaching out to their community for help is anything worth scorning.
Either way though, someone stealing the DB or asking for help with typos doesn't smack of corruption, so can we get to the good stuff? Who was giving out plot in exchange for TS?? Who was giving out double-XP for PrPs to their besties? I want the tea.

@Pandora I think it's more a case of 'of all the databases to steal, why steal one that you know has a zillion errors in it?', not so much the original creator/that person's typos/how they handled it. (I agree that it's a good way to handle it if you know it's an issue in your own work.)

If only this trait extended to actually running the game.

Yep. This was also the DB that at one point managed to emit three messages every time an object negotiated an exit. So, if you were playing in a public room and someone came in one exit and left via another, the characters in the room would see three variations of "X enters from up the street" in a row, followed by three variations of "X leaves down the street." It was hilarious in a way, but I ended up gagging @odrop messages in my client to get some peace.

Did this game ever reset?
Constructively, one of the reasons I left Serenity and never came back (note: Mal and Inara were ultimately reason #1) was that the game was basically seeded with these level 3000 dinosaurs who had all the cash, guns, ships, equipment, etc. I got the sense that a lot of those old guard characters were sticking around mostly because they took advantage of Mal/Inara/cheating/double XP/etc until this small number of players had enough skill and capital to do anything.
Back in the day there was definitely a sense of go along with Mal/Inara and you get everything, go against them and they'll fuck you, but in the aftermath of them leaving the balance of power on the game was so skewed.
So the same old 3million xp players with all the credits and all the ships seemed central to everything, but some of those people were also pretty entitled.
So, I guess I'm asking are a lot of those old guard vulture dinosaur 1%ers still there, has there been a reset and/or new direction of the game, or is this the same Serenity Mush that's been essentially kept on life support for the last 8 years?
I mean, shit, even TR and FC reset.

There's two different questions here.
It doesn't look like it has been reset, but at the same time the game is practically empty so the old folks aren't there either.
-
Could I have the ship Inara stole from me out of jealousy back?
-
A reset would really do the game good I think.
Erase the pirate fiasco and all the other terrible displays of favoritism and issue with dinosaur characters and old equipment that got grand fathered in after rule changes.
Maybe make credits a little easier to come by so people don't have to literally spend 24 hours a day doing trading code for peanuts and spend months/years saving up for decent equipment. Also would present a chance to redo that skill list. 7 (7!) subskills for Run may be a little much.
Don't limit the cool ships so much? I remember there was only X number of type Y ship allowed in the game.. and almost all of them were owned by characters that hadn't logged in years. years. I started on Serenity maybe 5 years ago and there are some ships still parked where they were when I first logged in.
I started playing there after the worse of the staff favoritism, but caught a glimpse of it when Inara returned to throw Favor around. In that time between the game really was pretty awesome. A lot of that had to do with a great group of players running PRPs and the like, but the theme is good, a lot of the systems in place are pretty good.. it certainly has potential.

I feel wayyyyyyyy less stupid about the shit I was designing now.

One of the major, major problems with Serenity was that it was so very... fragmented. There was no guiding story, no major 'situations' that could organically arise, because everyone was flying about with a handful of other people.
-
@Tinuviel In the time that I played this was something less of an issue. The staff there did try and run some metaplot to get anyone that wanted to involved. I personally didn't care for the plot they ran for a few reasons, but a lot of folks had fun with it.

I think that the Firefly "'verse" could be a very good game setting, in part because it's like it was sketched on a cocktail napkin. Space with no aliens, people who talk like Hollywood cowboys, cannibals, anti-establishment fantasies, lots of cool Chinese slang that's easy to use because nobody ever said it right to begin with... you could spend an afternoon watching the shows, and you got it. All you have to do is to not add in stupid things like pirates and staffers playing perpetual kidnap/rape plots.
I've thought about making a character, but I realize that when I go on the game, I find myself asking things that basically boil down to, "Are you all still mired in bad craziness?" That's a fair question in one way, but in another way it's something that is really unfair of me to ask current staff and players. If I don't trust them, then I shouldn't be asking them to convince me that I can. Nobody has time for that.
-
I will say this.
There have been, what, maybe 8 different Battlestar games?
With a good enough system, a decent staff, and perhaps a reset to wash out some of that Mal and Inara corruption past, I think Firefly could go that route.
In fact, I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen more of it in the last 5 or so years. There were a few splinter games during SerenityMush's heyday, but IIRC those were run by people with only slightly better reputations than Mal/Inara.

That was the one thing I enjoyed about having Kitty crewed with the Redemption. We mostly stayed docked in Eavesdown and we were able to pretty much RP with anyone. We definitely were not like a lot of crews who were on the move a lot or whatever.

@TiredEwok Hah! Hat Trick!
Kitty using a taser to electrically subdue 3 people in a very tragic shower brawl (wet floors) is probably in my top 10 mushing moments ever.
