Welcome to Night Vale is a work of surrealism if you consider yourself, the listener, to be the primary character

I don't buy this. Not the Night Vale quote, but il-volpe's. If that's what the community of people who talk about these things all day want to decide, but Night Vale's primary interaction with its audience is pretty damn surreal.

I don't want to ruin the fun of the show by deconstructing it all that far, tho. At least get to the end of year one, dear listeners. You'll know when it happens.

Ugh, I am super interested, but doubt I'd have the time. It's awesome that you're doing this, Cobalt! 🙂 I only learned of Night Vale from this forum, and got quickly addicted.

That's what I was saying. I should have said "a primary character" and not "the." If the audience is a character in the performance, the show is a surrealist work. Listening to the show is a surreal experience. If and when something happens like Cecil addresses "you" and means "you" the real listener and not just the imaginary Night Vale residents, the show steps into being a surrealist work rather than a magical realist one.

I still think the distinction is silly. The events are surreal, whether or not the audience is a character.

The Sheriff's Secret Police has issued a statement to this station asking to stop drawing attention to clouds, and to forget that they exist.

The surrealist world of Naked Lunch makes the protagonist very ill, or maybe he's ill to start with. The magical realist world of Marquez stories is just home for the characters. That's an important distinction, especially in the case of making it a MUSH. Though it's probably totally unnecessary to voice this distinction, 'cause people who play would be fans of the show, and will now that without needing to know that there's some sort of classification system for art and literature that draws a distinction there.

Night Vale is absurdist, as much as it's anything. I dunno if it could ever really work as a MUSH, because Night Vale has no rules. it resembles more than anything one of the social MUs of the early 90s, where people were "persona playing" rather'n roleplaying. Night Vale could be to the twentyteens what Dhalgren was to the 90s. it's more a freebuild/makeshituppus venue than a roleplaying game.

                    It's just a short wait.

                      Hallo!

There are a few things that still need to be worked out, however, those interested can log onto darkwater.mechanipus.com 8000. I'll be around in the afternoon and evenings this week (and much more next week) Pacific time. I'd like to maybe talk to folks this weekend to see what we can come up with for things. A few things to think about:

                      • What system?
                      • Regular MU* style, or more tabletop style (weekly or biweekly sessions).
                      • Themethings: In vs Out of Night Vale, and if In Night Vale -- original citizens or outsiders like Carlos? (No, no PCs that are of The Sheriff's Secret Police, sorry!)
