I have enjoyed the little bit that I've played of it. It's definitely different because of the art style for the game - but I did not find that a negative. The gameplay and music are both really good and I find the mechanical elements of the game really interesting.

I think this thread talked me out of Outer Worlds, but in its place I need a good game to foolishly waste money I don't have on. Currently eyeballing Pine and Greedfall. Can anyone condemn or recommend either?

I will say this, re: Outer Worlds.

I did the $1-for-the-first-month X-Box Game Pass so I could try it out. Because I don't have $60 spare. But everyone talking about it made me want it and I'm so stressed out by work, I needed a single-player escape.

I got home from work on Monday, and just sank into it. Despite my ADHD flare up of late, despite all my stress (and I am someone who funnels stress into OCD into 'mustdoallthethings' into...)... I just sank into my chair and only checked in with people to make commentary on the game. I had no interest in anything else.

It sounds like maybe after that first planet it might go downhill and maybe it does, but I already consider that first $1 fucking worth it for an entire evening of getting my mind off shit.

Huh, I hadn't even seen the $1 xbox beta thing. Seems like a good time to try it out and there's a couple other good titles on there I don't have on steam (albeit not enough that I'd want to keep it).

@gryphter Greedfall looks okay, it's just unpolished and with the playthroughs i have seen once you get into the second half of the game it becomes a bit tedious in the combat.

Vampyr is pretty nice, and I think it's still on sale on the PSN.

Has anyone played Disco Elysium? I'm hearing good things.

I'm enjoying it so far. There are a couple of irritating bugs, so I stopped to finish my playthrough of Tyranny (which also has irritating bugs, but I recognize they're never getting fixed, while I still have hope for DE) and will probably go back to it this weekend.

The advertising is a little misleading - it's not an open world game. You are playing a specific character with a specific history, through a specific set of events, and while there's a lot of flexibility in how those are accomplished, and a lot of fun side-quests, it's definitely not an open world game in the traditional sense. Everything I've seen also indicates that it's not a 60 hour game as some initial reports suggested - most people seem to be taking about 20-30 hours to get a satisfying playthrough including a lot of side quests.

The writing is the showcase and appeal; there's no combat mechanics, and your stats and skills are mostly represented through ability checks that happen automatically - these checks happen silently behind the scenes, and can add or remove options for responses, and provide a lot of different options (some of which are terrible). It allows for a lot of roleplaying, but also means a lot of reading. It's hilarious reading, for my money, but I'd probably recommend finding a let's play and watching, like, the first ten minutes to get an idea of tone and style.

Yeah, the $1 for the first month was enough for me to go 'OK. This is a worthy price point for me to step in and give this (and maybe a couple other games!) a go.'

It's also a good option for people who don't want to touch Epic!

The only problem I've had with Vampyr is that the normal mode is a bit reliant on really good reflexes which is a bit hard to do with how clunky the game can feel at times with the animations. Some of them feel a bit inconsistent in timing so I get frustrated.

This seems to be a pretty common complaint, tbh. The story is great. The concept is great.
But the actual execution of controls makes even the easier modes difficult to execute.

And as someone who plays games as relaxation, it's why I had to put Vampyr down. I fucking loved it, but as I progressed further into the game and drove my own difficulty up (due to decisions made), it got more frustrating to play.

Honestly, the controls feel very similar to The Witcher III so far. I like how the game seems to be built off of Vampire: the Masquerade (with concepts like 'aggravated damage' and 'the embrace').

Talking about vampires, I actually picked up the 14 year old original Vampire the Masquered Bloodlines recently and installed the 'fan patch' that fixes stuff and improves the graphics.

It is actually really damn good? A few sections get iffy especially if playing as a social character (looking at you, sewers full of monsters and only rats for blood) but I am now super hyped for the new one coming out next year even if it has been delayed.

Yeah, but even social characters can get powers that affect combat which I thought was a nice touch. I have yet to beat the darn thing as a social character because the end boss is a biatch.

Yeah that's the major factor, just that it has some exclusives. I generally prefer things on Steam just for keeping my library, achievements, etc in the same place, but if I can't stand the wait I may as well also pay a lot less money.

@magee101 Honestly, I just use the console cheat and give myself a combat skill at a ridiculous level, and just never use it except for the stuff where no social solution exists. Life's too short for those sewers.

The sewer combat itself was not too bad really even with combat skills of 2-3, Blood Boost turns you into an instant badass on the cheap. The big issue was playing a Ventrue who could not get any sustenance from rat blood. I got through a LOT of blood packs to power those fire ax swings.

There isn't enough Fallout for me in Outer Worlds.

Kind of surprised that's a sticking point for some. After the dumpster fires that Fallout 4 is and the catalyst that is the worst PR nightmare for Bethesda that Fallout 76 still continues to be, and you're saying that it's not Fallout enough?

I dunno, but I feel like if it was more Fallout like than it would be criticized to no end for copying Fallout, despite the fact that Obsidian is pretty much made out of a good deal of people who created Fallout at Black Isle.

The point in this case is that I didn't want another Fallout, I wanted a game that was inspired by Fallout, which doesn't mean it has to be or even retain a great amount of elements from Fallout. And seriously, if it is going to copy Fallout, copy New Vegas.

I'm enjoying it for $1. If I had $60 to drop on a video game sight unseen then I wouldn't be complaining because I'd be rolling 'round in the dolla dolla bills y'all.

I guess my message is: Be better consumers.

Also: Don't know if it's worth $60 yet. Will review more when I get there and when I better know what $60 means nowadays.

In terms of game length, I've been playing for three days because work is suspended due to Company Reasons, so I've had a lot of time to play Outer World, and by a lot, I mean, at least 8+ hours a day. Pretty sure I've went past the 30 hour mark and I'm still wandering around Monarch, having not finished the quest line there yet. So while it's obvious that it's gonna be a YMMV situation on how long the game is, I'm totally getting my money's worth.

Considering the fact that there's no microtransactions, no DLCs, not even any pre order or deluxe/complete/GOTY editions and it's...just a game. That was put out. Without any kind of extra bullshit attached to it? Back when you just wanted to buy a game to enjoy? Without worrying about some possible potential expense?

That fact alone is why, to me, it's worth $60.
