Old Republic Star Wars Game - FFG System Poll
-
So I've been working on a Star Wars game set in the Old Republic era and it's moving along. Initially I was just going to keep it private because of some of the design choices that were made with how the FFG Star Wars system was implemented but myself and the other players involved think it might be fun to take the game public next year.
So, my question is centers around how open people would be to a modified Fantasy Flight Games(FFG) Star Wars system. I'll list the big changes below.
The game itself would be running on Ares, which is important to know for some of the changes we'll be discussing.
1: The first major change centers around talents. Talents have been changed from the talent trees in the core Star Wars games to the pyramid system found in the core Genesys system. This was done mostly because there was already a core FFG plugin for Ares ready to go. I did go through each specialization to re-tier the talents to(hopefully) create a balanced and fair character progression system.
I like this change because it makes it easier to modify specializations and I honestly find the pyramid system easier to follow than the Star Wars talent tree system. I think players will have an easier time customizing their characters using this system as well.
2: The second major change centers around Jedi. I've opted to use the system presented in the Clone Wars source books to represent the Jedi. Instead of a number of Jedi careers with 3 specializations each we have the Jedi class with the Padawan, Knight, and Master specializations.
Personally, I never liked the system of Jedi careers presented in the Force and Destiny RPG. I think the Padawan/Knight/Master system more accurately represents the movies and other source material. I've also kind of included it in our theme. I'll try to keep it brief but I'll explain below.
The game takes place after the Mandalorian wars so the galaxy has known nothing but war for 20 years or so. A lot of what it means to be a Jedi has been lost in that time. An entire generation of Jedi have been born and thrown into war without proper training. Secrets have been lost but that also means they can be found again. Want a talent from one of the dropped Jedi specializations that we don't use? Create a plot to rediscover it. We think it could add a lot of fun and depth to Jedi RP.
3: The final major change is that we don't use things like Obligation or Morality. We found those work great in tabletop with a small group but we thought they could get muddled on a larger game with 10 or 15 active players.
I know this doesn't go much into theme but that's not really my concern at the moment, I very much like our theme. I'm just wondering if people would play at a Star Wars game using the FFG system modified as I've described above.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

OLD REPUBLIC OLD REPUBLIC OLD REPUBLIC

I'm not familiar with the FFG system at all but: easier is better
And ares! Woo!
In before @Jennkryst: Is what your proposing going to have some sort of space transit ship system thing?... or mummies.

I would play literally any system if it meant I could Old Republic it up I don't even care.
-
IMO the FFG system works very well with a small group of players and a competent, motivated GM. It is probably not a good choice for use with an online game
My own Star Wars AresMUSH project uses Savage Worlds, which I chose because FFG wasn't suitable, D6 was too dated and I hate D20.

Yeah, I don't really know any of the systems. I just always want an Old Republic game.

It just seems really ideal for a MU* setting? Just in terms of, like -- you've got some well-defined factions and it bypasses a thing I've heard a lot with people complaining about super limited Force user slots and whatnot. It's a time when Force users are common on both sides, there's a rich dynamic, etc.

That, too. Also means no temptation to use the 'big' FCs for plot purposes (thus creating a fishbowl effect). I just also love the setting of the Old Republic.

Hmm. Just to touch on some things briefly...
Space Battles: Would not be Star Wars without them!
Savage Worlds: Hmmm. I had similar concerns to be honest about the FFG system. Savage Worlds is an option too(I love me some Savage Worlds).
Old Republic: I think this is just about the best "era" for a Star Wars game. It gives a ton of creative freedom and allows for all the Jedi you want.Lots to think about! Thanks a lot!

D6 was too dated
D6 has seen continued support and revision through the years. It became Open D6 way back, there have been numerous 3rd party works this decade utilizing Open D6. There is currently Mini D6, which is more parsed down and adaptable. Magic/force has been brought up to speed finally to be just as quick and easy.
-
@Lotherio Yep yep. I own most of the TinyD6 stuff. It seems ideal for a limited run game but not for a MUSH.
Edit: Belatedly I realized that you said "MiniD6" and not "TinyD6" but the same applies.
-
PLEASE let me know when you make this. I would KILL to play on a game like this.
-
Germane thought: I am always willing to give almost any system a shot. If it doesn't cripple the game, it's all good. (For hypothetical divinity's sake, I played on Windy City and that system was so bad it would have given the Rolemaster guys pause.)
Tangential thought: The Old Republic! Yes, please. I could write a ten page essay on why, but just imagine a middle-aged man making light-saber noises and pulpy prop-airplane-as-space ship drive sounds for several seconds and it basically would convey the same meaning.
-
Pretty please.
-
I think your answer is yes.

Since D6 was mentioned, I really liked it for what it was. It is a system that is easily picked up, especially compared to other RPG systems, and you can get through CG quickly and into RP with minimal struggle.

I am torn on this vote, because modifications are obviously needed. But not to the degree of the Ares Pyramid.
Edit - would help if I read the whole poll.

Just to clarify for those who are not familiar - this wasn't something designed specifically for Ares. The talent pyramid system comes from FFG's own Genesys RPG, which is the generic RPG that grew out of their Star Wars games.
The prevailing sentiment in the FFG forums seems to be that folks prefer the talent pyramid because it offers more flexibility, and folks don't do as much cherry-picking to get just the talents necessary to "unlock" whatever high one they really want. I presume this is why FFG went that route for Genesys.
@ZombieGenesis - one other thing to consider in this is something that Chontio ran into. Players familiar with FFG often expect the whole system, not just chargen and rolls. I think this is largely true of many Star Wars players as well, since most of the existing SW MUs have had coded ships, economies, combat, etc. While you certainly could code all of that up for Ares, it would certainly be a sizeable task.
