I just want to see some people play to actual /archetype/. When I last played anything remotely oWoD (Years ago) there was no such thing as a gang banger Brujah iconoclast. There were no Biker Gangrel's about. There were no actual Artist Toreador (They were all trying to sleep with Nosferatu). There were no hard core Children of Gaia Rahu (they were all like, white hat hippies even when they should have been in frenzy). There were no Ragabash who were actually bad ass (They were all sniveling bitches).
The amount of social power a gang could bear down with is immense, but I never see them used for anything other than bodies with shotguns & Dragonsbreath rounds. Not every Glasswalker embraces cybernetics & the internet. Not every Shadow Lord is evil. Not every Silver Fang is the next coming of Albrecht.
Maybe things have changed in the many years since I've played oWoD, maybe not.
I would just want to see those Archetypes that made me think a clan and it's lore was cool, not all the 'out of the box' characters who are so far out of the box you have to wonder why they would be embraced into the clan to begin with.
-
@Lithium People are discovering the power of Backgrounds again, and with more people embracing CoD/WoD, I have seen many more Archetypes.
-
@Lithium I can't speak for oWoD because I've always played nWoD, but I think part of the issue here is that everyone wants to be a special snowflake, and a game marketed as "personal horror" should give a degree of license to that. Combine this with the reality that people aren't terribly creative, and, well, there you have it. They break the rules, rather than adding to them.

@Coin Hush.
Nuh.

@Coin To do that you would need to do away with lampshade-hanging, which will be quite frankly impossible as long as people keep trying to recreate Buffy.
Not everyone is trying to recreate Buffy, and even in Buffy, the sort of character I am talking about surfaced across the seasons in different ways. I also disagree that lampshade hanging is mutually exclusive with what i suggested.

They are all OWoD racial types, mostly Changelings.
Redcaps are pure appetite and fury. Pooka are shape-shifting fae. Satyrs are those humans with goat legs from Greek mythology turned into a faerie kith. Most people play them as horny goats, but there is another tack to take, which is that of the intellectual. Nockers are another kith/race of fae who are frustrated perfectionists, loosely based on the mythological Welsh knockers (who were the ghosts of miners) and somehow turned into crotchety Jewish stereotypes by White Wolf.
Mummies are supposed to be refined immortal souls taking up residence in the bodies of slackers, at least in Revised. Most of the ones I have run into on games have been some sort of celebrity, for some reason.
And it just keeps getting better! All the upvotes for you.
-
Aww, thanks! That was a nice little confidence booster.
-
I love it, crotchety Jewish miner ghosts. Is this related to the myths that you can distract fairies by making them count rice or sand? I've never really explored the fae stuff. But once, I saw a bunnygirl.
-
@Kanye-Qwest That's only true outside of WoD. Within it, they just have yet another "mental breakdown" that gives them +15 aggro attack dice.
-
No. Not at all. At least, not that was given any indication in any of the material. Like everything else in the WoD, I think the developers just picked words out of a hat (or had manatees do it with balls in a tank) and put things together with little respect to the actual mythos they could be working with.
-
@hedgehog Well, in White Wolf's defense, it is meant to be a mish-mash of all kinds of different lore loosely pertaining to whatever splat in question. That said, I agree. They took too many liberties in some cases.
-
Sure. But the nockers especially peeved me, because it was like 'hey - these guys are actually Welsh (maybe even Cornish) in origin, but we already saturated the splats with fae from the UK and Ireland. How do we rectify it?' 'I know! YIDDISH!'
-
@hedgehog Yeah, that shit's a non-sequitur. And unfortunately, it's a non-sequitur that wasn't even that fun. I mean, at least when they added animism to Werewolf it just kinda "worked." This, well, doesn't.
-
The Akashic Brotherhood having nothing to do with the astral plane was another good one. Or 'Bruja'. Who were not witches at all.

Yeah, I never really understood that much.
Sluagh? Irish. Pooka? Celtic. Boggans, Nockers, Redcap, Sidhe? All very Brit-Isles.
Kind of why I lost interest in the game, I think.
-
As well as piskeys, clurichan, boggarts, river hags,. But they tried to rectify that Sluagh thing by making them...vaguely slavic. Scandinavian Trolls are not giants. Ljosalfar are more interesting than Sidhe. Why are there no dwarves/Dokkalfar?
So many questionable decisions.
-
@hedgehog I never got into Changeling in the first place because it just immediately conjured images of KISSMEIMIRISH drunken tomfoolery oi m8 fist foits at the pub while the bagpipes play in the background.
-
It had so much promise, but has degenerated into that or tea parties. Or unseelie who are just rapists and orgiastic bores. With Oirish and Cockney accents.

A vampire and werewolf cop duo.
CoD or oWoD, depending on how goofy you wanted to get with it. (Correct answer: way goofy.) -
