We have a winner. This worked, even as 'p der' instead of 'page der.' Thanks, all!

- I have zero interest in pretty ANSI described clothing. Is there a functional bonus to wearing a fancy tiara? My PC is in the "wouldn't bother IC" camp, but if there is a functional reason (does it affect stats?) for him to have better clothes (I know steelsilk etc., but the rest of it?), let me know.
Not currently but planned. The social systems I'm planning on will have a fashion mini game that will lead to prestige, and prestige will impact largely any kind of interaction a PC ever has with NPCs for good or ill modified very heavily by social skills. So in an indirect way it will, particularly in so much that I want to provide incentives for noble houses bankrolling social endeavors in general.
-
@apos Please don't make clothes a thing that affects anything else. I love the standard position that, "If someone's not wearing clothes, assume they're wearing clothes," because I really cannot be bothered to give a rat's backside about having the right coloured shirt under the proper style of pants.
Firan had "fashionable clothes." I hated every aspect of that. It just creates item bloat and yarg.
So, anyway, just my vote. I won't leave the game over it, but I'll be as irritated as if someone were doing the "I'm not touching you" thing siblings do to each other.

@fortydeuce I used
nick page foo?$1=page foobartholicus=$1
where the ? translates to any individual character. Which does mean that typingpage foobartholicus=hey!
resulted inYou page foobartholicus with "artholicus=Hey!"
Good point. One should still be able to enforce a
=
there, so the issue still stands, but this is a nice way around the problem.

That would still be unchanged. It would be for a specific opt in, that's one way of many to gain prestige.I don't really see many people who don't care about it changing what they are personally doing, so much as funding people that do care about it.
-
@Apos I have to agree with @dontpanda that the idea of coded clothing affecting stuff - even if it's only coded social interactions is a huge turn-off. I know that I'm not the average Arx player, but I only have 2-3 hours a night, 2-3 nights a week and very little, if any, time on weekends. I want to spend my RP time RPing. I don't want to have to worry about jumping through code-hoops in order to get satisfying RP or to be involved in things.
Maybe someday, I'll be inspired and create some coded clothing for my char, but I don't want to feel pressured that it's something I have to do in order to keep up with the game.
-
As a newbie but as the person who brought it up, I'll also third @Lisse24 and @dontpanda on being wary about coded clothing affecting stuff. It personally strikes me as a hindrance to promoting solid RP to let codes handle the work of what should be RPable, even vis-a-vis NPCs. I mean, from my understanding, I could go to a crafter, use +shop to avoid all RP after the initial interaction, and get a Level 10 NPC-Affecting Fantastic Cloak of Awesomeness, but where's the RP in that and, moreover, around that? It'll net you people posing their clothing at length and little meat beyond that, I think.
-
@fortydeuce I don't honestly think that's going to be a problem with the design we have in mind. Trust us that we are dedicated to making fun things for people that facilitate rp.
The entire reason we have shops code like that is so that crafting pcs don't HAVE to spend all their rp time rping about commissions for people. Fashion will be a thing that will benefit those that want to take part, and prestige in general will be a BIG deal (but will not solely depend on fashion). You can definitely still skip coded clothing objects if you like.
-
@kanye-qwest Oh no, I totally see the point of +shop for crafters, to alleviate the pressure of "Oh God, another holocaust cloak?" or what have you -- but it could (though not would!) probably be gamed in this way by the PC who wanted something crafted to avoid RP and just get the shiny for Prestige/NPC bonus, which made me nervous about potential misuse.
ETA: coming at it as a current WoDer/occasional Star Wars and the like player with not so much facility with code-heavy stuff, I should add. I apped something on Firan at least a decade ago, and never got through chargen.
-
The benefit I see as to making clothes and the like actually do things is that it's incentive for us to buy things from crafters and it helps keep the economy moving. If there isn't things to spend money on that actually do things, the money becomes pointless.
-
@Sunny I get that. And I would happily dump funds into lifestyle, if it gave me the same bonuses. The issue for me goes back to how I want to spend the 5-8 hours a week I spend on RP. I would much rather spend that time on actual RP then either having to come up with a name and craft something myself or chasing down a crafter to do it for me.
Same thing with a character's wiki page on WoD games. I don't mind doing minor tweaks, but unless I'm feeling really inspired, I'm not going to do a lot of reworking to my wiki, because I want to spend my RP time RPing, not jumping through hoops.
-
@lisse24 I don't understand your position. If you're happy to dump funds into lifestyle to achieve the same ends, why is someone else having the option a problem?
-
@sunny Because as far as I know, I can't dump funds into lifestyle and achieve the same ends? If I'm wrong, then let me know, but my protest is solely against turning clothing into a nice thing that some people like to a must-have.
-
I don't know why options are a bad thing. I don't get how giving those of us that like fashion relevance is a bad thing. Lifestyle gives you those bonuses, but a fashion system gives crafters relevance, as of now people have declared expensive clothes a waste of money because it provides no coded benefit, and if you don't want to spend all this time coding your outfits, there are several crafters that can provide those for you. If you don't want to use the fashion system, than don't. I quit being a crafter myself because it wasn't how I wanted to spend my RP time, and yet I still manage to acquire tons of outfits, pre fashion system, just because I like having them.
-
Options can be a bad thing if they distract from the gameplay or give an advantage that some might consider unfair, both things others have offered some concern over. This is normal. I wouldn’t want new rules to change my character or force me into unwelcome gameplay either.
However, I don’t see anything unfair so far and I’d be surprised if anyone was notably inconvenienced, tho it’s hard to comment on an incomplete system. I doubt it will end up game breaking, but if so then I expect to hear reviews about it here.
-
@lisse24 Even right now, lifestyle awards prestige, yes (don't change anything you're doing though, since there was a post about prestige being reset eventually). +home/lifestyle from your home will show you the amount.

What's 'unwelcome' is relative though. People have different tastes, and in many cases don't even know what they want until they're given it, let alone what others might want. For example I've told @Apos in the past I was shocked at how much interest there was in purely cosmetic stuff like customized item descriptions (without any stats) or messengers who do the exact same thing as the default ones. To me that feature offers nothing but to others it does.
I will however also agree emphatically with someone in this thread who pointed out that without meaningful money sinks the economy can't turn... and it's not easy to find things people want. And usually you can't go wrong with putting that gold toward buying numbers on your +sheet if what you're after is to provide such sinks.

Thanks! I asked on the info chan about how to get nick to do this, and the impression was that it probably wasn't possible. Much obliged.
No problem. I'm surprised that was the impression.
I'm the guilty party, but I thought @fortydeuce was specifically looking for a name alias situation, wherein he could set an alias just for a person's name and have it work anywhere. Not just paging a specific person. Or I would've started looking at setting up a page alias!
Actually, the nick command does this too. By default
nick
operates as if you gave the/inputline
switch, that is, it will just match things as you write them, from the beginning of the line. But you can also apply nicks to object-lookups your commands do (a Character is just like any Object in Evennia) by using the/object
switch:> nick/object dude = griatch
> look dude
<description of Griatch>
> nick/object bbox = great box of apples
> give bbox = dude
You give Great box of apples to Griatch.
> nick/object t$1 = tall $1
> give bbox = tman
You give Great box of apples to Tall man
Use the
/accounts
for nicking account references (maybe less often useful).
.
GriatchPS: The issue was closed. Latest Evennia now allows you to include
=
in the pattern by escaping them with\=
.Edit: Actually
page
in particular does not use the regular search mechanism, so you cannot nick that one. Gah ...
Edit2: ... and now you can! At least in base Evennia, don't know when Arx updates. -
Oh, also a question: if someone can page/PM me with the Discord channel, I'd be interested in taking a look, though I doubt it'll be my cup of tea. Thanks!
-
@arkandel I'm on board with people spending money. I just never enjoyed or appreciated the fashion aspect of Firan.
I think it would be neat if crafters gained prestige based on who and how many people bought their things. But I can see that getting broken pretty quickly. It'd add either a barrier to entry for new crafters, or a cool rp hook as they try to build a reputation from the ground up
