Changes to The Hog Pit

@Arkandel can't you turn off notifications for specific threads though? Seems like a silly reason to hide something. Oh no! Notifications!

Yeah, but the threads I post in are typically also the ones I do care about. I'd need to turn notifications off for the site.
No big deal either way, I'm just wondering if this is a bug.
-
@Arkandel Pretty much not a deal breaker all around. I just see it having a minorly opposite effect.
-
We shall see. Undoing what's going on takes six clicks of a mouse. I ran the process through my head just now. Six clicks. Admin section -> Manage Categories -> Hog Pit -> Allow registered users to see & to post -> Save. This is all it takes to undo the experiment from a technical angle.
From a social angle, well, that's harder to predict. I personally know two and know of a few other people who've left the board specifically because it was all vitriol all the time. I know only one who left because it wasn't. Will this more hands-on approach change the boards for the worse? I don't know. I don't think so else I wouldn't have agreed to this, myself, and I'm the most vitriolic of the crew. We shall see.
-
@Arkandel I wish the sports threads were behind a wall too.
EDIT:
I have yet to figure out how to turn off notifications AND HAVE IT WORK.
I still keep seeing threads pop up that I've turned notifications off on, like Haven or Firan or The Basketball Thread.
So yeah, putting stuff behind walls... maybe /everything/ should be behind walls, then you can pick and choose exactly which topics you want to read and see.

Settle down, Donald.

Go to your profile. click the 3 dots in a circle. Settings. Go down to FOLLOW. Uncheck those.
-
@TNP When I click on following, it just shows the people I may or may not be following. It has nothing to do with actual topics.
-
@Lithium Not that.
It's under settings. It looks like this:
Follow topics you create
Follow topics that you reply toGo to your profile. Top right of the page (assuming it's the same in all skins) is the 'edit' 3 dots. Click that. You'll see settings.
-
@TNP Well when I checked that, the only one that was marked was topics I create, which make sense that I'd want to follow those and the other was unchecked, but it was following everything even still.
Either way I unchecked both, and we'll see if it worked or if it's along the same lines of not being able to see who downvoted a person's post (I use a darker skin because I don't need 30 inch monitor of bright whiteness glaring in my face) because of possible color scheme issues.
Thanks for trying to help though, lets hope it works.
-
If it doesn't, poke Glitch. Cause obviously it's a glitch.
-
@TNP yeaaah still popping up every single thread. Oh well. I have a rabid dislike of nodebb now but what can I do? It is what it is. Thanks again tho.
-
It would be kind of nice if people didn't move threads to the Hog Pit that had originated elsewhere. Especially when said discussions were no more aggressive than the usual stuff I see around the ads/mildly constructive sections. Otherwise people who don't participate in the pit can no longer see their own posts or any responses. It's basically the internet equivalent of having the door slammed in your face in mid-conversation.
-
There will always be times when threads are moved. And this door is to another room that you can enter if you wish to, with no lock or entry requirements.
-
@Glitch Well, the entry requirement is being willing to be subjected to unfiltered aggressive dialogue, which this discussion wasn't. Also, saying "you can open the door and go through" does not detract from the feeling of having the door slammed in your face in the first place.
Edit to add: I'm not saying 'never move threads' I'm just suggesting that maybe use a little higher bar of whether something really truly is worthy before moving something behind a firewall. I mean, considering the tone of the criticisms leveled at people in other threads, it didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary here.
-
It was my mistake to carry on with your analogy, since there is no slamming of doors. Instead, a topic was moved somewhere you can read it if you want to, at the risk of seeing titles to other topics that are unlikely to sound any more aggressive than the conversation that was happening in the Arx thread. I don't think it belongs in Mildly Constructive and none of the other categories are appropriate, so it goes to the Hog Pit.
-
Might be good to make sure a note is left saying where the topic went.
-
@Misadventure That's a good idea. It has been added.
