So this may be wildly off the mark for this crowd, but you never know!

There's a new Pern game out there. It's very small at the moment, so plenty of opportunity. Insta-riders are not open at the moment, but that may change. You can app in Crafters from apprentice to master. Setting is shortly before the 4th Pass (Threadfall will begin roughly February of next year) around Fort Hold / Weyr. Fort Hold, Fort Weyr, and the Harper Hall are the IC locations. Characters must be at least 12 (with a preference for 16+ for Impression).

They've relaxed a few things from canon/standard. Transgendered characters are welcome and while there's no surgical procedures, there are essentially herbs/medications that can be taken. Golds and bronzes still do impress to biological gender, but there's no restrictions for the other colors. There's also no sexuality preference for dragons. Wanna be a lesbian goldrider? Go for it. Wanna be a hella straight man with a sassy green? Get on with yourself. Women are seen as equals to men. Individual viewpoints may vary, of course, but overall... Feel free to be flexible in your character.

Search will be really chill, too. You'll just set a flag on yourself. They'll search roughly 2x the PC eggs. If you're not going for a metallic and aren't opting for 'full immersion,' you'll know if you're going to Impress and have an active hand in making your dragon.

I joined because one of the Head Staff is a long-time friend of mine and I know she's both no-nonsense and low drama (aka if you cause issues, she will have no qualms giving you the boot). As I've gotten to know the rest of Staff, I dig them, too.

So, yeah. Pern. Not for everyone, but I figured I'd post because you never know. The game is still very small, still in progress, but we're working on picking things up and a part of that is having more players.

The wiki is still being built, but can be found at: http://threadsofpern.wikidot.com/
      The game's address: whitestar.spundreams.net 4201

I play Annika (Jman Woodcrafter posted to Fort Hold) and M'kel (Bluerider / Asst. Dragonhealer), so feel free to look me up. 🙂

This tempts me more than I thought Pern MU*s were capable of tempting me at this point. It's been so long that one might be refreshing.

It'd been so long for me, too, and I was a bit hesitant at first... But it's kind of like sitting down with some chips and an old, favorite cartoon. It's nothing stunningly new. It's not going to challenge you. But it's fun and sweet and easy.

Hmmm. My very first Mu*, maybe the second, was a Pern game called Dragonsfire.

Dragonsfire was my first! November, '98. I played a Harper because of course. 😉

No idea when it was. I played a healer apprentice who eventually made journeyman. I'm pretty sure his name was Berin. Don't ask me why I remember that because I have no idea.

Gosh I think my first, was the original Pern MUSH.

Personally I like non-canon games, and MUSHes just make it hard to do non canon.

Awesome! How long until drama-filled threads about dragon colors fill this topic? And then someone will make a gold-of-your-own MUSH!

Weren't these the original drama games? Where people didn't get their dragons and became very angry? And the author Anne McCaffrey had several games that she blessed with her hand?

They were. But this one's aiming to cut down on that. A number of games have. The smaller playerbase in MU*ing has actually been of benefit to Pern games. Honestly, the only really 'limited' color at this point is gold. Recently there was a hatching on... shit, I forget which game. Pern World? Where every PC candidate wanted bronze, so they said 'fuck it. All PC dragons are bronze, the NPCs fill out the rest.'

There may still be drama, but unless Threads suddenly a'splodes with dozens of people clamoring for a gold... I don't see it being any bigger/worse drama than any other game right now.

You know what's funny? I was thinking not too long ago about how much I miss being able to write up dragon and egg designs.

My first Pern game was NC, I had a goldrider (shut up) named Tarlo. I made so many mistakes, it was one of my first MU*s and I think it was the first time I ever actually used a PlayedBy on a game (Shiri Appleby, fwiw.)

Injolnith on HT was the last dragon I impressed/played. And it's gonna take a lot to beat that awesome.

I always enjoyed designing dragons, but I hate descing them. So much. My crafter on Threads (Annika) has a firelizard... and it still has its hatchling desc. I just cannot get my brain in gear to write a proper desc for him. I'm terrible.

McCaffrey seemed more involved in MU*s (at least in terms of 'authorizing' them) than most authors back in the 1990s, which led to a lot of weird rules around canon and permissions and dragon names that couldn't be reused from MU to MU (and other nonsensical stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting because I never went too deep down the Pern rabbithole). That stuff hasn't been a factor for a loooooong time, though. Hilarious as some of it is to think about now.

Yeah, Threads is not going to do the 'You can't use dragon names from other games.' It's been over two decades. The names were getting downright ridiculous. My bluerider's dragon is Halzyth. I bet it's been used before. I don't care.

Could see it being used. Usually, when making a dragon for a candidate, you try to build a name that 'fits' the dragon. But M'kel was an insta. I just pulled the name out of my ass and decided I liked it.

I've always wanted to play a dragon rider. But the problem is, I don't want to 'play' the dragon and that always seemed kind of expected from what I saw. These dragons are created with more attention to detail than most player characters with in depth personalities. I don't like puppets. I want my dragon to be in the background and mostly just 'there'.

Eh, I've generally just had them in the background and used as RP fodder more than anything. I know it was big to have someone actually puppet your dragon for a while... But that tapered off in the early 00's for the most part.
