Without having used SimpleMu, what does "spawns" do and what makes them essential?
To answer the last part, since you can spawn anything based on a regular expression away from your 'main' window it's a sanity preserver.
On most MU, especially if you're staffing, there is a lot of spam coming in and you can't always leave channels (or if you do it's easy to forget them off, can't check them between poses when you do have the inclination to do so, etc). By spawning them you spare yourself all of that, and get keep your main window clean.

@Jennkryst ... <Name> and others are [Name] ...
Not really, as you tell it specifically what to look for. [Public] *, <Random> *, From afar, *, Long-distance to *...
I don't remember if it includes the asterisk in the code, or if it is an option of 'line begins with ___', but you have to manually put in each thing. This, incidentally, will allow you to have different channels go to different windows if you wish.
-
@Jennkryst Well sure, if you want to be weird about it. I don't use spawns, generally, anyway.

The hardest part of switching from SimpleMU to MUSHClient was getting used to the up arrow being previous sent, instead of ctrl+p. I still fuck that up regularly, because I JUT WANT TO NAVIGATE THE INPUT WINDOW. Also, you could have as many windows as you want open, and all of them will be listed across the top bar (while MUSHClient limits me to a paltry 10).
Go into Configuration->Commands->Keyboard Preferences. Uncheck everything in the "Arrow Keys" section, then check everything in the "Compatibility" section. You can now use cntrl-p and cntrl-n to navigate your command history.
-
For me? It's the ability to hit CTRL+F1, which changes all single spaces to %b, and especially CTRL+F2, which changes all carriage returns to %r. That alone makes SimpleMU my choice, especially when I'm storytelling and thus writing larger poses than usual.
-
I forgot about Ctrl+F1. Helps to format a bunch.
-
Potato has that. >_>

Is there actually a way to get a legit code these days? When I started using Simplemu it was already unsupported with a dead website.
-
People who bought a registered version back in the day can give you their codes if they've got them (mine has worked for a few friends). I think that's the only way at this point.
-
Yep, I've given 3 people mine and no one said anything about it not working for them, so I assume it does. That plus a few hard drives I've gone through now and it still works.
Pain to use with Windows 8.1 but not painful enough to want to change.
-
I've given mine to a handful of people. It's a registry key, so you just need to know how to install one.
-
It does come with your name attached though, so be aware that you're giving that out. If you used your name originally, that is. I give mine out too, but it's good to know.
